U.S. Navy Locations Featured in Summer Blockbuster Sequel

SAN DIEGO, June 24, 2009 | SHOOT Publicity Wire | --- The latest Michael Bay summer blockbuster sequel, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," promises to impress mixing the newest special effects technology with the military backdrop of America's Finest City.

With the help of San Diego Film Commission, the sequel to 2007's hit "Transformers," shot several scenes utilizing the best visuals San Diego and Coronado have to offer. The film opens nationwide on June 24.

The long awaited sequel gained approval from the U.S. Department of Defense allowing access to military installations across the country, including San Diego.

The production crew filmed a key shoot-out sequence in and around a bunker on the Coronado Naval Base near the Navy Radio Installation bordering Imperial Beach. Other scenes were shot aboard the submarine USS Topeka stationed at the Point Loma Submarine Base in San Diego. Some of the movie extras were US Navy sailors.

One of the most electrifying scenes in the movie was filmed while a CH-53 Marine helicopter flew up and down the city's waterfront over San Diego Bay while a Saturn was suspended in mid air. The car was drained of all fluids, filled with foam to guarantee it would float, and was suspended below the helicopter which took off from North Island and flew from the east end of Harbor Island south along the Embarcadero to the Convention Center.

"Productions, such as 'Transformers,' make a huge economic impact in and for San Diego," said Film Commissioner Cathy Anderson. "It also allows other filmmakers to see how friendly San Diego is to on-location filming, attracting future film productions, and showcases our unique filming opportunities."

The production crew spent an estimated $250,000 in San Diego during the filming and occupied about 250 hotel rooms around the city.

The 2007 "Transformers" movie grossed more than $708 million and received three Oscar nominations.
