Pioneer One announced today that it has been nominated for Best Drama in Online Film and Video in the 16th Annual Webby Awards. Hailed as the "Internet's highest honor" by The New York Times, The Webby Awards, presented by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (IADAS), is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet.
Pioneer One has been recognized as a game-changer for original content on the Internet. It's been noted for its high-caliber storytelling and engrossing plotline, especially in comparison to other web-series as TV Overmind notes: "Pioneer One has the look, feel, and length of real TV. Rather than embracing its delivery medium with self-referential gimmicks, Pioneer One offers a slickness of production and depth of story that blurs the line between 'web' and 'network' television."
Pioneer One was initially produced for and distributed through BitTorrent networks, utilizing the distribution platform VODO. Completing its 6-episode first season based on fan donations of $100,000, episodes of the show have been downloaded 4,000,000 times with a total of 8,000,000 estimated viewers.
"Nominees like Pioneer One are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet," said David-Michel Davies, Executive Director of The Webby Awards. "It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the nearly 10,000 entries we received this year."
The winners will be announced on May 1.
The Webby announcement comes as the Pioneer One creators are launching a Kickstarter campaign for their latest project, a drama pilot called CONTROL. Set in the Mission Control of a manned space mission, writer Josh Bernhard calls it a "mix between The West Wing and Apollo 13 in style and tone." The pilot is destined for the 2012 New York Television Festival, where Pioneer One took home Best Drama Pilot in 2010.
