Los Angeles-based Boxer Films delivers the memoir of a Hollywood icon in a thoroughly modern manner with the launch of the new iBook for iPad, Carl Reiner: I Remember Me, published this week on iTunes iBookstore. The premiere project from Boxer's new development arm, Random Content, the iBook is produced by Lawrence O'Flahavan, Alfredo Ritta and John Clark. The team also produced the hardcover, the audiobook and the eBook for the title.
"Entering the business of producing iBooks, through our new Random Content division, is exciting," says Film Director/Executive Producer Lawrence O'Flahavan. "Telling stories combining the text of a book with an assortment of streaming and image materials including film clips, letters, pictures and motion picture excerpts was an interesting challenge on I Remember Me by the legendary Carl Reiner. We plan to announce many more such iBook projects in the near future."
Reiner announced his new book on "The Tonight Show" with Jay Leno. The book recounts Reiner's experiences with Hollywood's greatest comedians, directors and stars such as Billy Crystal, Mel Brooks, Julie Andrews, Neil Simon, Mel Tolkin, Larry Gelbart, George Burns, Steve Martin and George Clooney, to name a few. Users of alternate tablet products Kindle and the Nook will be able to download a standard eBook of the title and a published book is in bookstores.
Reiner's already captivating manuscript is infused with rich media to capture a more vivid piece of the life of the Emmy and Grammy-Award winning actor, film director, producer, writer and comedian. Taking advantage of the new, more robust features launched on iBooks2 in 2012, the iBook utilizes the interactive features often used in new textbooks on the platform to further engage the reader in the storytelling experience. The iBook features include touch and slide timeline navigation, embedded video content, photo scrapbook with touch zoom, optional narration by Reiner himself, and changeable photo wallpaper backgrounds.
After working with Reiner on a freelance project, O'Flahavan and Ritta were struck with the voice of the unceasingly effervescent 90-year-old creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show. When presented with the opportunity to lend his talents to the publishing of Reiner's second manuscript, O'Flahavan promptly realized that his spirited life would be best shared in a digital platform. An experienced commercial film director and producer himself, O'Flahavan had been looking for the right opportunity to engage digital platforms as a new means of creating a documentary and telling a story visually.
Notes Ritta, "I really want fans of Carl's to get a similar experience to what I was lucky enough to have putting this iBook experience together. I want them to feel like they're sitting next to Carl in his house, hearing him tell the stories. I want the reader to feel the true emotion that I felt sorting through the memories alongside him."
As O'Flahavan and Ritta began their nearly 9-month journey sorting through Reiner's photos, videos and audio recordings, they began to conceptualize how the digital format would play out. For readers who desire a more straightforward experience, the portrait mode allows for a more traditional eBook reading. In order to be fully immersed in the rich media, readers can choose to view in landscape mode, where the video, audio and photo content will fully saturate the user into the era of classic Hollywood royalty.
Notes O'Flahavan, "We were strategic to keep the viewer's experience in mind from the onset. Carl is such a great writer that there was a natural flow to follow to create an immersive experience without the user feeling overtaken."
