"Banshees of Inisherin," "Everything Everywhere All at Once" garner 10 nods apiece; "Elvis" scores 9 noms

    LONDON --

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has unveiled the nominations for the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards, celebrating the very best in film over the past year. A total of 45 feature films received nominations.

Leading the tally was All Quiet on the Western Front with 14 nominations, followed by The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once with 10 nods apiece. Next was Elvis with nine nominations followed by Tár with five.

Up for Best Film are All Quiet on the Western Front, The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All at Once and Tár.

All Quiet on the Western Front equals Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (2001) as the film not in the English language with the most nominations in BAFTA’s history.

In the Best Director category, there are a number of first time nominees: Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King); Todd Field (Tár), Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front). Also up for Best Director are Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Park Chan-wook (Decision To Leave).

First time nominees also figure heavily this year among actors, with 14 of the 24 nominees in the performance categories receiving their first BAFTA Film nomination. They include Ana De Armas (Blonde), Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), Austin Butler (Elvis), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Paul Mescal (Aftersun), and Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once).

The Outstanding Debut By a British Writer, Director or Producer category consisted entirely of women nominees: Charlotte Wells, writer/director, Aftersun; Georgia Oakley, writer/director and Hélène Sifre, producer, Blue Jean; Marie Linden, director, Electric Malady; Katy Brand, writer, Good Luck To You, Leo Grande; and Maia Kenworthy, director, Rebellion.

Jane Millichip, CEO of BAFTA, said: “The EE BAFTA Film Awards are a celebration of the full spectrum of craft and creativity that go into filmmaking. We extend our warmest congratulations to the 215 people nominated today who represent 45 extraordinary films, spanning a vast range of narrative styles, genres and perspectives. We are proud of the role our Awards play in inspiring the public and future filmmakers around the world, and we look forward to celebrating all the nominees and their films at the ceremony next month.”

Krishnendu Majumdar, chair of BAFTA, said: “The EE BAFTA Film Awards are at the heart of our mission to recognize exceptional storytelling and the immensely talented people who bring those stories to the big screen, inspiring both audiences and future filmmakers alike. The range of films recognized by our 7,500 voters, spanning blockbusters to independent debuts, offers a uniquely British perspective on this year’s best films from around the world. It is a huge achievement to reach this final stage–congratulations to today’s nominees.”

Anna Higgs, chair of the BAFTA Film Committee: “It is heartening to see that BAFTA’s ongoing work to level the playing field continues to have a positive impact on the diversity and scope of talent and titles nominated today. I’m delighted to see an all-women list in our Outstanding Debut category, as well as so many first-time nominees across the board. Today is about celebrating the phenomenal success of this year’s nominees, who together with their fellow filmmakers and crews, have created a truly remarkable year of films.”

The BAFTA Film Awards will take place on Sunday, February 19, at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. Award-winning actor, presenter and author Richard E. Grant will host the ceremony.

The nominees for the EE Rising Star Award were announced on January 17 as Aimee Lou Wood, Daryl McCormack, Emma Mackey, Naomi Ackie and Sheila Atim. It is the only award voted for by the British public and it is presented annually to a performer who has demonstrated exceptional talent early in their careers.

The final, third round of voting opens tomorrow (Friday, January 20) to determine the winners. Round Three is voted for by the full film voting BAFTA membership, and its opt-in chapters or juries. More information can be found here on BAFTA’s voting processes.

Joachim Trier and Eskil Vogt Find A Home In “Sentimental Value”

    Thursday, January 15, 2026

“Home is where the heart is.” The universality of that time-honored adage is in many respects at the core of Sentimental Value (Neon)--not just as it applies to the story but also as part of the process that went into telling that story. On the former score, director Joachim Trier’s film--which he wrote with long-time friend and colleague Eskil Vogt--is set in an old family home in Oslo that carries memories that help to define two sisters, now adults, and their strained relationship with a father who prioritized his filmmaking career over being a parent. The sisters are Nora (portrayed by Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas). Nora, the older sister, grew up to be an accomplished actor, following in the cinematic/stage career footsteps of her dad, Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård in a Golden Globe-winning performance). After years of absence from Nora and Agnes’ lives, Gustav unexpectedly appears at the time-worn family residence to attend the funeral wake of the daughters’ mother but his prime motive for turning up is a movie that he wants to make in order to fuel his career comeback. And he has Nora in mind to play the lead in the film. She immediately refuses the role, which ends up going to a movie starlet (Elle Fanning). As shooting begins, psychological scars revert to open wounds and the presence of the American celeb forces Gustav, Nora and Agnes to look at themselves and their family’s fragile emotional underpinnings more closely. The family home is a repository of past lives spanning love, loss, alienation, joy, resentment and estrangement--as such, it’s a centerpiece for the characters in Sentimental Value and lends great insight into them. For example, at one point around the middle of the film, we see... Read More
