By Robert Goldrich
LOS ANGELES --The Creative Arts Emmys wrapped on Sunday (1/7) with the second consecutive evening of awards in the Peacock Theater at LA Live. While night two focused largely on reality shows and other unscripted TV, there was still some major star power in the winners’ circle, and a profound kind of reality that broke through with Television Academy voters.
On the former score, the marquee talent was headed by President Barack Obama and TV legend Carol Burnett. Obama was not on hand to accept his Emmy but Burnett came up on stage.
Obama won his second career Emmy–this time for the narration of his Netflix documentary series, Working: what We Do All Day. Arguably the narration category was the most star-studded of the evening as the field of nominees for this Creative Arts Emmy also included Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Morgan Freeman and Pedro Pascal. Obama’s first Emmy win also came for narration–back in 2022 for his work on the “Our Great National Parks” episode of the series A World of Wonder.
Meanwhile Burnett was presented with the last award of the Creative Arts weekend–to a rousing standing ovation–as her Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love won for best pre-recorded variety special. In her acceptance remarks, Burnett shared that she was proud that 90 Years of Laughter + Love had garnered multiple nominations. Commenting on the win, she deadpanned, “This is very encouraging.”
This marked Burnett’s seventh career Emmy win, the first coming in 1961. Prior to tonight, she had last won in 1997.
As for the aforementioned poignant reality which gained recognition, the big winner was Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie which topped four categories: outstanding documentary or nonfiction special; directing for a documentary/nonfiction program (won by Davis Guggenheim); picture editing of a nonfiction program (for Michael Harte, ACE); and original dramatic score for a documentary series or special (for composer John Powell)
Guggenheim served as director and producer on Still, which delves into Michael J. Fox who recounts his life, career and battle with Parkinson’s disease. The film adroitly uses clips of Fox’s feature and TV series to reflect his life, coupled with home movies, intimate on-camera interviews and narration read by the actor.
While his dream-like rise from obscurity to stardom on Family Ties turned nightmarish with the diagnosis at 29 that he had a degenerative disease, Fox has persevered, showing his resilience, retaining a self-deprecating sense of humor and managing to keep on keeping on–with the love and support of his wife, Tracy Pollan, and their kids. Fox says that he’s become more present in the moment and “still.” To attain a stillness while enduring an illness that causes physical tremors reflects in a sense the triumph of the human spirit.
In accepting the Emmy for direction, Guggenheim credited Fox with a positive attitude and love of life that has inspired everyone around him, including those who worked on this film. As an example of that inspiration, Guggenheim shared a quote from Fox who described Parkinson’s as “the gift that keeps on taking.”
Yes, the disease has taken something from Fox but he also regards it as a gift that’s enabled him to raise awareness of Parkinson’s and in the process, help others. Guggenheim marvels at Fox’s ability to find humor, his constant seeking of wisdom, and a refusal to live life confined by a label.
Here’s a category-by-category rundown of Sunday night’s Creative Arts Emmy winners, which include Apple’s “The Greatest” garnering the primetime commercial Emmy. See separate story here.
