"The Americans" next with 4; "Atlanta," "The Good Place," "The Handmaid's Tale," "Barry," "Mrs. Maisel" score 3 apiece

    LOS ANGELES --

BBC America’s freshman thriller Killing Eve topped all shows, scoring five nominations for the 2018 Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards. Next up with four noms was The Americans (FX) followed by five series with 3 nods apiece–Atlanta (FX), The Good Place (NBC), The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu), Barry (HBO) and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Amazon). Scoring two nominations each were This Is Us (NBC), GLOW (Netflix) and The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (FX).

FX leads all networks this year with 10 nominations, followed closely by Netflix, which has nine nods to its credit; and NBC, which has seven. BBC America and HBO have both earned six nominations; PBS/PBS Kids has four; Hulu, Amazon, and CBS/CBS All Access have three; Starz, Showtime, and Disney Channel/Disney Junior have two; and TBS, VH1, Lifetime, MSNBC, CNN, and The CW round out the lineup with one each.

The 34th annual TCA Awards celebrate the top series, producers, and performances of the 2017-2018 season, as selected by the media organization’s membership of over 200 professional television critics and journalists from the United States and Canada.

In addition to longstanding categories honoring outstanding achievement in news and information, youth, reality, drama, comedy, and miniseries, the 2018 ceremony will introduce a new category, the best in sketch/variety shows. Winners will be announced at the invitation-only presentation on Saturday, August 4, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Spanning a wide variety of networks and programs, the 2018 TCA Awards nominees reflect a diverse television landscape offering complex characters, thought-provoking stories, in-depth fact-based profiles, biting wit and satire, and much more. The Program Of The Year category highlights some truly groundbreaking series that have left an indelible mark on entertainment, taking their place among the greats as modern television icons. The formidable title bout includes last year’s winner, The Handmaid’s Tale, based on Margaret Atwood’s dystopian classic; Soviet spy thriller The Americans; devilishly funny afterlife farce The Good Place; Donald Glover’s genre-defying Atlanta; assassin caper Killing Eve; and the beloved family tearjerker This Is Us, all battling to claim the honor of one of the TCA’s most coveted awards.

After Delay Over Legal Issues, Oscar-Nominated Documentary “Black Box Diaries” Finally Premieres In Japan

    Friday, December 12, 2025

"Black Box Diaries," a documentary in which Japanese journalist Shiori Ito investigates her own sexual assault case and the barriers she faced in pursuing justice, has been screened widely abroad since its 2024 festival debut and earned an Oscar nomination early this year.

It finally premiered in Japan on Friday, a long-delayed domestic release that began with a single-theater run.

In Japan, sexual assault victims are often stigmatized and silenced. But the barrier to the film's release at home was largely the result of a legal dispute over her use of some interviews and footage of witnesses and involved parties without their consent.

The 102-minute film was screened to a full house on Friday at the T. Joy Prince Shinagawa, a large cinema complex in downtown Tokyo.

Ito expressed relief that she could finally share her story with an audience in her home country.

"Until last night, I was afraid if the film is going to come out or not," she told The Associated Press after the screening. "The reason I made this film is because I want to talk about this issue openly in Japan. It's been like my little love letter to Japan, so I'm just so happy that this day came finally."

Ito, who went public with what she says happened to her in 2015, has become the face of Japan's slow moving #MeToo movement. She is the first Japanese director to be nominated for an Oscar in the category of documentary feature film. The film is based on a 2017 book she wrote, "Black Box."

    What happened in 2015
As an intern in 2015, Ito was seeking a position at private TBS Television and met one of its senior journalists, Noriyuki Yamaguchi, who became her alleged assailant. She has said in her book and film that she became dizzy... Read More
