Agency’s work for Sandy Hook Promise wins Best-Of-Show honor as well as Best Branded Content; β€œMonica Lewinsky--The Epidemic” named Best Experimental Film

    NEW YORK --

BBDO New York was the big winner Tuesday night (2/25) at the eighth annual One Screen Short Film Festival, The One Club for Creativity’s competition that celebrates the achievements of global filmmakers from both the advertising and film industries.

Three awards were bestowed upon BBDO NY, including the Best-of-Show honor for Sandy Hook Promise’s “Back-to-School Essentials,” which also topped the Best Branded Content category. In addition, the agency won Best Experimental Film for “Monica Lewinsky–The Epidemic.”

“Back-to-School Essentials,” an impactful video that highlights the anxiety and fear students face in the reality of school shootings, was directed by Henry-Alex Rubin of production house SMUGGLER. The public service piece starts off as a familiar back-to-school ad but slowly unfolds to highlight students using everyday back-to-school items to survive a shooting, shedding light on the gruesome violent reality that students face.

Meanwhile BBDO NY’s “The Epidemic” follows Hailey, an average American teenager, as she shows symptoms of a mysterious illness. But there’s more than meets the eye. After watching the film, viewers are prompted to enter their phone number. They will then watch the film again, but this time they’ll receive the same bullying text messages as Hailey receives them throughout the story. Mixing the mediums of video and text, the spot illuminates how digital transgressions like cyberbullying can have very dire, real life consequences.

Cole Webley of production house Sanctuary directed “The Epidemic,” the latest entry in social activist Monica Lewinsky’s anti-bullying campaign–the previous pieces of work being “#DefyTheName” and the Emmy-nominated “In Real Life.”

Short film work from nine countries picked up One Screen Short Film Fest awards.

Along with awarding work in specific genre categories, One Screen expanded this year to also present best-of awards for creative excellence by region.  This year’s regional winners are:

    • Regional – Asia Pacific: “Times Out and Proud” by FCB India, New Delhi
    • Regional – Europe: “Boucan La Cible” by Quad Productions, Clichy
    • Regional – Latin America: “The History of La Cerveza Mas Fina” by AB InBev MΓ©xico and Observatory, Los Angeles
    • Regional – North America: “Conception: When Your Child’s Bogeyman is Real” by The New York Times, New York

“It’s fitting to present Regional awards for the first time because we received so much amazing work from around the world,” said Jonathan Jirjis, executive producer at The One Club and head of the One Screen program.  “Global interest and participation in One Screen has grown sharply over the years, promoting us to recognize the best of the best by region.”

He added the body of work submitted illustrates the current mindset and voice of the greater global creative community. “This year’s entries include provocative subject matter that prompts us to think about how we’re progressing as a people, and sparks conversation on how to keep us moving forward in the right direction,” said Jirjis.

Thanks To Shows Like “Abbott Elementary” and “Hacks,” LGBTQ+ Representation On Primetime TV Grows

    Thursday, November 6, 2025

TV shows like "Abbott Elementary," "Hacks," "Heartstopper," "The Last of Us" and "Yellowjackets" helped increase the ranks of LGBTQ+ characters on prime time by 4% over the previous season, according to a new study by the advocacy group GLAAD. This year's "Where We Are on TV" study, released Thursday, counted 489 LGBTQ characters across scripted prime-time broadcast, cable and streaming shows β€” up 21 additional characters. It marks a boost after two years of decline, but remains far below the 2021-2022 record high of 637 characters. Sarah Kate Ellis, president and CEO of the group, warned that those numbers could still decrease soon: More than 200 of the LGBTQ+ characters counted this year β€” in shows like "Heartstopper," "Harlem" and "Elite" β€” will not be returning due to a flurry of series cancellations, endings or because they were limited series. "Storytelling brings us together and this current cultural and political climate calls on creatives and executives to double down on fair and accurate stories of LGBTQ people," Ellis writes in the report. GLAAD added that the number of transgender characters on TV has slightly increased from last year to reach 33 β€” 24 trans women, seven trans men, and two nonbinary characters β€” but only four trans characters appear on series that have been officially renewed. The report is the 20th edition of the annual tracking by GLAAD and charts a remarkable leap from just 47 LGBTQ+ characters in the first study. It arrives as President Donald Trump has targeted transgender and nonbinary people with a series of executive orders β€” including one declaring the existence of two unchangeable sexes β€” stripping government websites of "gender ideology" an reinstituting a ban on transgender service members in the...
