    Bing Liu’s “Minding the Gap” Wins Best Feature At IDA Documentary Awards

    SHOOT New Directors Showcase alumni make mark in Feature, Short Doc categories

    It was a big night for director Bing Liu at the International Documentary Association’s 34th annual IDA Documentary Awards. During a gala ceremony held on Saturday evening (12/8) at the Paramount Theatre in L.A., Liu’s directorial debut, Minding the Gap, won the competition’s top honor as Best Feature. Liu, as previously announced, also won the IDA’s Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award. And in the Creative Recognition portion of the award proceedings, Liu and Joshua Altman earned Best Editing distinction for Minding the Gap.

    Minding the Gap tells the story of three young men—including Liu himself—who bond with one another via skateboarding to escape volatile families in their Rust Belt hometown. However as they grow up and adult responsibilities take hold, unexpected revelations jeopardize their decade-long friendship.

    The poignant film premiered this past January at the Sundance Film Festival where it garnered the Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Filmmaking. After its showing, Liu landed representation for commercials and branded content through Nonfiction Unlimited, a production company known for helping documentarians diversify into the ad arena.

    On the strength of Minding the Gap, Liu back in May earned inclusion in SHOOT’s 2018 New Directors Showcase.

    The backstory for Minding the Gap–which was acquired by Hulu in June–dates back to when teenager Liu began filming skate videos. He told SHOOT in an interview earlier this year that skate videos “became an obsession. It also allowed me to connect with other videomakers across the country. We’d give each other tips on upping our game. Over time, the skate videos became more and more experimental.”

    Then some five-plus years ago Liu started going around the country, interviewing skateboarders about their relationships and personal lives.  “I found a pattern of family dysfunction and over time I settled on making this a character-driven film in the town I grew up in, Rockford, Illinois. I grew up with these guys. We had similar issues and situations—and I slowly worked my way into the film [as an on-camera subject] over the past couple of years.”

    Liu developed the film with Chicago-based Kartemquin Films, and as a co-production of POV and ITVS. He not only directed and co-starred in Minding the Gap but also was its DP, co-producer (with Diane Moy Quon) and co-editor (along with Altman).

    As for his becoming part of the story in Minding the Gap, Liu said it was helpful “to have skin in the game as a filmmaker. I was less a protagonist in the traditional sense and more in the character of filmmaker, being the camera itself. I also became a bit vulnerable as I interact with my friends, which helped serve the purpose of touching on the issues involved more deeply.”

    Regarding what Minding the Gap taught him, Liu spoke about “not going into a project with a set idea of what a story is going to be. You have to let the characters’ lives lead the way, and you’re there to capture it in a way that’s true to them, that doesn’t get in their way.”

    There are other lessons that Liu would like Minding the Gap to impart to certain viewers. Alluding to the abusive father figures that the main characters endured as youngsters, Liu shared in his Artistic Statement for the film, “What’s clear from doing this project is that violence and its sprawling web of effects are perpetuated in large part because these issues remain behind closed doors, both literally and figuratively. My hope is that the characters who open doors in Minding the Gap will inspire young people struggling with something similar—that they will survive their situation, live to tell their story, and create a life of causality for themselves.”

    Liu wasn’t the only SHOOT New Directors Showcase alum to be honored at the IDA Documentary Awards last night. Floyd Russ, who was in the 2016 SHOOT Showcase, saw his documentary Zion win the Best Short Award. The film introduced audiences to Zion Clark, a young wrestler who was born without legs. Growing up in foster care, Clark struggled with fitting in his whole life—until he finds the sport of wrestling, a passion which he pursues, pushing himself to great lengths.

    Zion was produced by NYC-based The Bindery. And Russ is handled for commercials and branded content through Tool of North America. Among his notable spot endeavors are Ad Council’s “Love Cam” PSA for R/GA, which was nominated in 2017 for a primetime commercial Emmy.

    Among other IDA Documentary Award winners last night were: Showtime’s The Trade for Best Episodic Series; Netflix’s Wild Wild Country for Best Limited Series; and HBO’s John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls which garnered the ABC News VideoSource Award.

    Finishing in a tie for Best Music Documentary were Mr. Soul! and Matanga/Maya/M.I.A.

    Earning the Best Cinematography mantle was Shevaun Mizrahi for Distant Constellation.

    How “Pee-wee as Himself” Documentary Came Together After Paul Reubens’ Death

    Paul Reubens did not tell his director that he was dying.

    On July 31, 2023, the news of Reubens' death came as a shock to documentary filmmaker Matt Wolf, who had spent a year trying to convince him to make the ambitious two-part documentary "Pee-wee as Himself," now streaming on HBO Max, and over 40 hours interviewing him on camera.

    But in 2023, the project was in danger of falling apart: The two had been at an impasse for a while over the issue of creative control and they'd finally found a way forward. He had one last interview scheduled, set for the first week of August. Then the texts started coming in. Wolf sat there shaking.

    They'd spoken about everything — Reubens' childhood, his complicated relationship with fame, his ambitions, his commitment to his alter-ego Pee-wee Herman, his sexuality, his arrest — except the fact that he'd been battling cancer for the past six years. But after the initial shock, a renewed purpose set in.

    "I went to work the day after Paul died. I started to read the 1,500-page transcript of our interview through the night and was struck by the significance and meaning that came by understanding that he was privately contemplating mortality," Wolf said. "I was aware that this was an extraordinary situation that was part of the story of the film and that the stakes were the highest I had ever experienced."

    For the next year, Wolf would wake up and say to himself, "You cannot drop the ball. Rise to the occasion." It was, he said, "the most challenging and involved and emotional process of filmmaking that I've ever gone through and maybe that I'll ever go through again."
