    “Birdman,” “Big Hero 6” Take Top Feature Honors At Cinema Audio Society Awards

    LOS ANGELES --

    The team of Thomas Varga, Jon Taylor, CAS, Frank A. Montaño, Gustavo Borner, Jason Oliver and John Sanacore, CAS. won the Cinema Audio Society Award for Outstanding Sound Mixing in a Live-Action Feature Film for their work on Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). The honor was bestowed last night during the 51st CAS Awards ceremony at the Crystal Ballroom of the Los Angeles Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

    Top honors for Motion Picture-Animation went to Big Hero 6 and the sound mixing team of Gabriel Guy, CAS , David Fluhr, CAS, Alan Meyerson, CAS and Mary Jo Lang, CAS.

    The CAS Awards also celebrated the professional contributions of production sound mixer David Macmillan, CAS by honoring him with the CAS Career Achievement Award. A three-time Academy Award winner for The Right Stuff, Speed and Apollo 13, Macmillan was feted by previous CAS Career Achievement honoree Scott Millan, CAS  along with Steve Bowerman, CAS and David Krischner.

    Among other highlights, the Oscar-nominated director of Boyhood, Richard Linklater, received the CAS Filmmaker Award in a presentation that included remarks by Christopher Nolan, John Pritchett, CAS and Tricia Linklater.  Linklater joins an impressive list of previous CAS Filmmakers honorees including: Quentin Tarantino, Gil Cates, Bill Condon, Paul Mazursky, Henry Selick, Taylor Hackford, Rob Marshall, Jonathan Demme and Edward Zwick.

    The sound mixing team of Sherlock: His Last Vow took top honors for Television Movie or Mini-Series.  Television-One Hour honors went to Game of Thrones, while Modern Family won the award for Television Series-Half Hour. Foo Fighters Sonic Highways won for Television Non-Fiction, Variety or Music Series or Specials.

    Danny Maurer a student at University of Colorado Denver was awarded the CAS Student Recognition Award and presented with a check for $2,500.

    The CAS Technical Achievement Awards were presented to Sound Devices Dante and MADI Audio Recorder model 970 for production, and iZotope RX4-Advanced for postproduction.

    Funny and Feminist Fashion Advances The Storytelling In “Palm Royale”

    When Kristen Wiig steps out of a vintage Rolls-Royce in the opening scene of Season 2 of "Palm Royale," she's sporting a tall, yellow, fringed hat, gold platform sandals and sunny bell bottoms, with fabric petals that sway with every determined step. It's the first clue that the costumes on the female-driven comedy are taking center stage. The Apple TV show made a splash in its first season with the starry cast, high production values and ubiquitous grasshopper cocktail. Wiig's character, Maxine, tries to break into Palm Beach high society in 1969 and bumps heads with co-stars Carol Burnett, Allison Janney, Leslie Bibb and Laura Dern. But also playing a starring role are the vintage designer frocks that reflect each character. For Season 2, which premiered this week, Emmy-winning costume designer Alix Friedberg says she and her team coordinated "thousands" of looks that reflect the characters' jet-setting style. She says 50-60% of the brightly colored and graphic print costumes are original vintage designer pieces, sourced by shoppers and costume designers. "The looks are so iconic. Sometimes Kristen will walk in in something, and it brings tears to my eyes," Kaia Gerber — who plays Mitzi — said in a recent interview. The creative process entails more than shopping If not original vintage, Friedberg's team builds the costumes, and if a character has to wear an outfit in multiple scenes or in big dance numbers, the team may create duplicates to preserve continuity. Friedberg says she was lucky to find so many vendors with vintage designer pieces in great condition.
