    DALLAS --

    AICE’s 2015 Camp Kuleshov trailer competition has concluded its chapter competitions this week, holding events in Detroit and Dallas to crown local champions, both of whom advance to the next round of judging which will result in an overall International Winner.

    At an event held at Cathel Color Company in Detroit on Tuesday, Nov. 3, assistant editor Lisa Roberts of Territory took First Place for her take on “Office Space,” Mike Judge’s 1999 workplace dark comedy, which she transformed into a white-knuckle thriller. Second Place in the Detroit Camp Kuleshov went to assistant editor Nick Jukowski of Beast, who recut “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou” as a thriller. Third Place went to assistant editor Justin Grosjean of Cutters, also for a version of “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou” as a thriller. To view Robert’s First Place winner, click here.

    The following night, at the post house 3008 in Dallas, assistant editor Alexandra Villalba of Republic Editorial won First Place for her version of “Office Space” cut into a thriller. To view her entry, click here.

    Both Villalba and Roberts were presented with Avid Media Composers for their First Place finishes, courtesy of AICE’s corporate partner, Avid. Detroit’s Second Place Winner, Nick Jukowski, won a gift certificate from the royalty-free stock video, photo and image library Pond 5, another AICE corporate partner.

    AICE announced in August that its Camp Kuleshov competition had gone international, with a unified format that has all assistants taking part in the various chapters working from the same creative briefs, entry rules and source films. With the presentation of winners in the Detroit and Texas Chapters, the stage is set for the Camp Kuleshov International Jury to review all the top winners in the Editing, Graphics and Audio categories to select overall winners in each.

    In addition to Territory’s Roberts and Republic Editorial’s Villalba, also competing for the overall winner in Editing will be the following chapter winners:

    –Assistant David Rubin of Cutters in Chicago for “A Life Exposed: Behind Steve Zissou,” his Documentary take on the Wes Anderson classic;

    –Assistant Sara Sachs of P.S. 260 in New York for her version of “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” as a Super Hero flick;

    –Assistant Michael Wolfe of jumP in Los Angeles for his creepy take on “Tootsie” as a Horror movie;

    –Assistant Michael Pavoni of Umlaut in San Francisco for “Adrian,” in which he mashed up several pictures from the “Rocky” franchise into a Thriller;

    –Assistant Jes Frigon of By the Booth in Toronto for his vision of “Office Space” as a Thriller.

    Competing for the top honors in Audio will be Mike Regan of Another Country on Chicago for his otherworldly sound design for the opening sequence of “2001: A Space Odyssey”; John Nathans of Plush NYC in New York for his sound design for a pivotal, climatic scene in “2001: A Space Odyssey”; and Isaac Olsen of One Union Recording in San Francisco for his sound design on a battle scene from “Star Wars.”

    In the Graphic Design category, the jury will select a top winner between entries from Ben Pokorny of The Colonie in Chicago, who won for his graphics-driven title sequence for Terry Gilliam’s dystopian fantasy “Brazil,” and Michael Marciano of P.S. 260 for his original opening title sequence for “Eraserhead.”

    The top winner in each of these categories will be presented with an iMac, donated by Avid resellers AVI, CineSys-Oceana, Cutting Edge, HB Communications, KeyCode Media, Melrose MAC, T2 Computing, TM Television and Vintage King Audio. They’ll also be saluted at the 2016 AICE Awards presentation in Chicago.

    “Send Help” Remains Atop Box Office, “Melania” Plummets On A Quiet Weekend In Theaters

    Sunday, February 8, 2026

    Hollywood largely ceded attention to football over a slow box-office weekend, with the survival thriller "Send Help" repeating as No. 1 in ticket sales and the Melania Trump documentary "Melania" falling sharply in its second weekend.

    Super Bowl weekend is typically one of the lowest attended moviegoing times of the year. It was the second slowest weekend last year and in 2024 it ranked dead last for moviegoing.

    Studios instead put their focus on advertising movies for the massive television audience. Among the trailers expected to hit the NFL broadcast Sunday were The Walt Disney Co.'s "Mandalorian and Grogu," Lionsgate's Michael Jackson biopic, "Michael" and Universal Pictures' "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie."

    In North American theaters, the Disney.-20th Century Studios release "Send Help," directed by Sam Raimi, lead all films with $10 million in its second weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. With $53.7 million globally thus far, the R-rated survival thriller has proved a solid midbudget success. Disney meanwhile watched its remarkably long-lasting "Zootopia 2" cross $1.8 billion worldwide in its 11th week of release.

    "Melania," from Amazon MGM, added 300 theaters in its second weekend but dropped steeply to $2.4 million in ticket sales, down 67% from its much-discussed debut. The rapid downturn means the Brett Ratner-directed documentary is likely heading toward flop territory given its high price tag. Amazon MGM paid $40 million for film rights, plus some $35 million to market it.

    The North American total for "Melania" stands at $13.4 million. Amazon MGM has not released international figures, though they're expected to be paltry.

    Kevin Wilson, head of domestic distribution for the studio, said the movie's... Read More
