Helen James and Dan Watts have been hired to assume the leadership of CP+B’s London office as managing director and chief creative officer, respectively. CP+B London’s clients include Infiniti, PayPal, Hotels.com, CoppaFeel, American Airlines, Argos, BetStars, ABInbev, Letgo, National Army Museum and Royal Society for Blind Children.
Watts joins CP+B from 4Creative, where as head of creative, he oversaw the brand and program advertising for Channel 4. While there, he spearheaded the recent Channel 4 rebrand work with renowned “SuperHumans” director Dougal Wilson, as well as the Great British Bake Off campaign, which won golds at the Campaign Big Awards and Promax TV awards. Prior to that, Watts was a creative director at CHI & Partners, where he worked with a variety of clients including GSK and findmypast.com. He oversaw the successful iD Mobile launch, which centered around the digital film series “Do Your Own Thing” and helped create the award-winning Talk Talk rebrand campaign, as well as The Times/Sunday Times print work which won Silver Lions at Cannes. Before then, Watts spent almost a decade at Fallon London running creative on multiple accounts including Skoda, Netflix, Kerry Foods, Mikado and Cadbury. Earlier in his career, he spent time as a copywriter at Campbell Doyle Dye and 180 Amsterdam.
James comes over to CP+B from BBH, where she was managing partner. In that role she was central to the leadership team, delivering transformation throughout the agency and its connected businesses. James also led BBH’s award-winning social media and content unit, a multi-disciplinary team of 35 people delivering best-in-class social communications. Prior to leading the social media unit, James led account management at BBH, an 80-strong department at the agency, and led the transition of the Tesco business into BBH in 2015. During her 10 years at BBH, James ran BBH’s biggest and most creatively awarded accounts including Virgin Media, Barnardo’s, Lynx, eBay and Vodafone.
“There are a lot of brilliant advertising people in London, but Dan and Helen were the two that just knocked me out from the first time we met. They have amazingly complementary strengths, and they share the same convictions–a spirit of entrepreneurialism, a healthy disdain for the ordinary and a deep belief in the power of ideas, invention and imagination,” said Chuck Porter, chairman, CP+B. “We’ve had some ups and downs in London–that’s not unusual when you export an agency culture around the globe. Review: Director-Writer Megan Park’s “My Old Ass”
They say tripping on psychedelic mushrooms triggers hallucinations, anxiety, paranoia and nervousness. In the case of Elliott, an 18-year-old restless Canadian, they prompt a visitor.
"Dude, I'm you," says the guest, as she nonchalantly burns a 'smores on a campfire next to a very high and stunned Elliott. "Well, I'm a 39-year-old you. What's up?"
What's up, indeed: Director-writer Megan Park has crafted a wistful coming-of-age tale using this comedic device for "My Old Ass" and the results are uneven even though she nails the landing.
After the older Elliott proves who she is — they share a particular scar, childhood memories and a smaller left boob — the time-travel advice begins: Be nice to your brothers and mom, and stay away from a guy named Chad.
"Can we hug?" asks the older Elliott. They do. "This is so weird," says the younger Elliott, who then makes things even weirder when she asks for a kiss — to know what it's like kissing yourself. The older Elliott soon puts her number into the younger's phone under the name "My Old Ass." Then they keep in touch, long after the effects of the 'shrooms have gone.
Part of the movie's problem that can't be ignored is that the two Elliotts look nothing alike. Maisy Stella plays the coltish young version and a wry Aubrey Plaza the older. Both turn in fine performances but the visuals are slowly grating.
The arrival of the older Elliott coincides with her younger self counting down the days until she can flee from her small town of 300 in the Muskoka Lakes region to college in Toronto, where "my life is about to start." She's sick of life on a cranberry farm.
