    Frank Martin Schmidt, aka Martines
    LOS ANGELES --

The Bigger Picture, the L.A.-based production house led by founder Tracy Mays, has added directors Humbi Entress and Martines to its roster for North American representation spanning commercials and branded content. This marks the first U.S. representation for both filmmakers.

Entress, a passionate snowboarder, surfer, adventurer and art addict, started his career with snowboard films and documentaries. With his first films in advertising, Humbi earned recognition at the Swiss National  Awards, and producers and agencies took note as he started filming projects for clients around the world. He is an expert in working with real people, integrating them authentically in narratives with natural surroundings. Entress has directed for such brands as Swisscom, Heineken, SBB, BKW, AXA and KFW Bank.

Entress shared, “I enjoy exploring–relationships between people and nature, the contrasts we see on the surface vs the things that connect us on a deeper level–and taking audiences along for the journey.”

Frank Martin Schmidt–known as the artist Martines–was born in Germany and spent his childhood in New York. His lifelong passions: film and sports. Martines began his career as a journalist, working for German television and filming documentaries both as a camera operator and director. This experience enhanced his storytelling intuition and ability to capture moments of humanity. A career in advertising soon followed, with Martines’ astute ability to hone story a key facet to his success in shortform collaborations, with an emphasis on joyful exuberance and the beauty of culinary experiences. His reel includes spots for Muller Chocalat, 7 Days, Maggi Nestle, and Rauch Juice Bar.

“Taking a closer look or seeing things from a different perspective, can transform the ordinary into the unexpected,” noted Martines. “Whether creating a magical landscape or connecting to the playful fun of sharing great food, I strive to invite the audience in to the experience.”

Martines and Entress join a directorial roster at The Bigger Picture which includes Caswell Coggins, Jones and Amir Mokri along with a collection of affiliated creators.

“If there’s a lesson in 2020–and there were many–it is that storytelling is vital and cinematic communication carries us forward,” said Mays. “Both Humbi Entress and Martines are at the top of their craft–creating original and inspiring work that connects brands to audiences genuinely, and with entertainment value.”

Directing and Lensing “Lord of the Flies”

Bringing nearly 40 boys--all under the age of 12--together even under normal circumstances is a recipe for chaos. But it’s nothing compared to leaving those lads to fend for themselves on an island in William Golding’s classic 1954 novel “The Lord of the Flies.” And then add the dynamic of trying to do justice to that book in a television miniseries of the same title with an ensemble of kids--36 in all--who have never acted professionally on-camera before. That incredibly challenging TV proposition was embraced by screenwriter/executive producer Jack Thorne, director/exec producer Marc Munden and other artisans, including cinematographer Mark Wolf, BSC, yielding a four-part limited series which debuted earlier this year on the BBC and then began streaming this month on Netflix. Lord of the Flies has already earned critical acclaim, including a Gotham TV Award nomination last month in the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series category. At first, Munden confessed that when the prospect of such a project was proposed to him, his initial thought was “who needs another version of ‘Lord of the Flies?’” Two feature films had been made--with Munden an admirer of the Peter Brook-directed big screen adaptation released in 1963. But upon reading the script penned by his long-time collaborator Thorne, Munden saw the light--and the opportunity to shine a light on these British schoolboys, particularly the lead characters Piggy, Ralph, Jack and Simon, in an insightful way that hadn’t been done before. In fact each of the four episodes brings a different protagonist to the forefront--the first installment focusing on “Piggy,” episode 2 on Jack, episode 3 on Simon and episode 4 on Ralph. This structure leads to a better understanding of each... Read More
