    NEW YORK --

DOC NYC–the documentary festival celebrating its 15th anniversary in-person November 13-21 at IFC Center, SVA Theatre and Village East by Angelika, and continuing online through December 1–has unveiled its main slate lineup. The 2024 festival presents more than 110 feature-length documentaries (including yet-to-be-announced Short List and Winner’s Circle titles) among over 200 films and dozens of events, with filmmakers expected in person at most screenings.

Opening the festival on Nov. 13 at SVA Theater will be the U.S. premiere of Sinead O’Shea’s inspiring portrait Blue Road–The Edna O’Brien Story, a breakout hit from the recent Toronto International Film Festival that honors the legendary Irish writer, who passed away just a few months ago at the age of 93.

Closing the festival on Nov. 21, also at SVA Theatre, will be the world premiere of Peter Yost and Michael Rohatyn’s Drop Dead City–New York on the Brink in 1975, a look back at the circumstances and players involved in NYC’s mid-70s financial crisis. The festival’s Centerpiece screening on Nov. 14 at Village East is the World premiere of Ondi Timoner’s All God’s Children (also part of the festival’s U.S. Competition), a chronicle of a Brooklyn rabbi and Baptist pastor who join forces to create greater unity between their two communities, against all odds.

Included are 31 world premieres and 24 U.S. premieres, with eight of those presented in the U.S. Competition, for new American-produced nonfiction films, and another eight featured in International Competition, for work from around the globe. The Kaleidoscope Competition for new essayistic and formally adventurous documentaries continues, while the festival’s long-standing Metropolis Competition, showcasing New York stories and personalities, also returns. In addition, the festival includes thematically organized sections that spotlight new films on music, sports, activism, and more.

“DOC NYC is honored to connect superb documentary art and artists with an appreciative public in New York City and across the U.S. in our virtual theater,” said the festival’s artistic director Jaie Laplante. “The filmmakers of this year’s official selection have gifted us with engaging, vigorous work that provides us with new ways of looking at our world.”

Among films making their world premieres are stories of survivors from some of the most heavily war-scarred regions of our world. Miriam Guttmann’s Front Row, executive produced by Sarah Jessica Parker, features a group of Ukrainian ballet dancers in exile who embrace a front-line soldier into a new ballet. Joel Akachukwu Benson’s Mothers of Chibok presents us with a community of women in Nigeria who struggle to persevere while grieving for daughters kidnapped by Boko Haram. In Yalla Parkour, filmmaker Areeb Zuaiter explores memories of her childhood in Gaza through a video connection with a young man practicing parkour in Nablus, and Sarah McCarthy’s After the Rain: Putin’s Stolen Children Come Home focuses on a group of Ukrainian children who had been abducted by the Russian army.

The Special Presentations section of the festival includes the World premiere of Reiner Holzemer’s Thom Browne: The Man Who Tailors Dreams, a definitive look at the American superstar designer (who is expected to attend the screening in person), known for his reconceptualization of the classic men’s suit and dramatic runway presentations.

Domestic stories from New York City and the U.S. make up many of this year’s World premieres. Dawn Porter will present two episodes of her forthcoming series The Sing Sing Chronicles, a jaw-dropping look at an epidemic of wrongful imprisonment cases. DOC NYC’s 2015 Audience Award-winning filmmaker Justin Schien, co-directing with Robert Edwards, returns to the festival with Death & Taxes, about economic inequality issues. Wendy Lobel’s Anxiety Club looks at anxiety through the lens of contemporary stand-up comedians, and Molly Bernstein and Philip Dolin’s Art Spiegelman: Disaster is My Muse profiles the legendary Queens-born artist. Ricki Stern and Jesse Sweet examine the nuances of our parole system in Nature of the Crime, and in the “What Comes After Hope?” episode of Eyes on the Prize III: We Who Believe in Freedom Cannot Rest, the forthcoming second sequel to Henry Hampton’s legendary series, director Asako Gladsjo focuses on the evolution of a new generation of activists.

The festival’s popular Sonic Cinema section of music documentaries includes world premieres of Harley Flanagan: Wired for Chaos, about the founder of the punk band Cro-Mags; Janis Ian: Breaking Silence, a look at the fearless singer-songwriter who sings for generations of women; and Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary, which traces the evolution of a genre that rocks–but not too hard.

World premieres exploring topical issues include Surveilled, which follows journalist Ronan Farrow as he uncovers the various ways our lives are surveilled by the State; Isla Familia, Abraham Jimenez Enoa and Claudia Calviño’s intimate look at family under emotional siege by the repressive Cuban government; and Spacewoman, a look at what it took for NASA astronaut Eileen Collins to become the first woman to pilot and command the Space Shuttle.

Other significant premieres include the U.S. rollout of Eddie Huang’s Vice Is Broke, a freewheeling personal take on the infamous meltdown of the VICE media empire; Nishtha Jain’s Farming the Revolution from India; Sareen Hairabedian’s My Sweet Land, selected as Jordan’s submission to the International Feature category of the 97th Academy Awards; and Sissel Morrel Dargis’ Balomania, selected by CPH: DOX as their entry to the 2024 Doc Alliance Awards.

Several filmmakers from DOC NYC’s seventh annual 40 Under 40 cohort, spotlighting young creatives that are making an impact in the field of documentary, have feature film work in this year’s festival. Cinematographer John “Hunter” Nolan makes his feature directorial debut with Unearth (world premiere), and Sarah Garrahan is an editor on Slumlord Millionaire (World premiere), directed by 40 Under 40 alumni filmmakers Steph Ching and Ellen Martinez. Additional 2024 cohort members featured in this year’s official selection are editor Rosie Walunas (The Sing Sing Chronicles) and director/producers Jalena Keane-Lee (Standing Above the Clouds) and Katie Mathews (Roleplay). Other 40 Under 40 alumni with new works in the 2024 festival include director Elizabeth Lo and producer Emma D. Miller with Mistress Dispeller and director/producer Bess Kargman (Diane Warren: Relentless).

Short-form content continues to be represented in the festival’s Shorts Competition (94 films), DOC NYC U Competition (12 films representing student work from nine NYC schools), and an out-of-competition special presentation of the forthcoming Season 3 of Firelight Media/American Masters’ acclaimed In The Making series (8 films).

More news, including the features and shorts named to the festival’s Short List sections for the year’s leading awards contenders, the Winner’s Circle showcase of international festival laureates, DOC NYC’s competition jury members, and other festival updates will be announced in the coming days.

Returning this year to partner with DOC NYC is Subject Matter, which will award a $20,000 grant to support one social issue documentary’s marketing and impact campaigns, alongside a $20,000 grant to a nonprofit working on the issue featured in the film.

Three senior feature programmers oversee specific sections: Ruth Somalo on Kaleidoscope, Karen McMullen on Metropolis and Sonic Cinema, and Brandon Harrison on Game Face Cinema (devoted to sports stories). They also selected other titles in the festival alongside feature programmers Bedatri D. Choudhury and Murtada Elfadl. Samah Ali is the festival’s senior shorts programmer, working with programmers DeWitt Davis and Anita Raswant.

The following is a breakdown of programming by section:

After Delay Over Legal Issues, Oscar-Nominated Documentary “Black Box Diaries” Finally Premieres In Japan

    Friday, December 12, 2025

"Black Box Diaries," a documentary in which Japanese journalist Shiori Ito investigates her own sexual assault case and the barriers she faced in pursuing justice, has been screened widely abroad since its 2024 festival debut and earned an Oscar nomination early this year.

It finally premiered in Japan on Friday, a long-delayed domestic release that began with a single-theater run.

In Japan, sexual assault victims are often stigmatized and silenced. But the barrier to the film's release at home was largely the result of a legal dispute over her use of some interviews and footage of witnesses and involved parties without their consent.

The 102-minute film was screened to a full house on Friday at the T. Joy Prince Shinagawa, a large cinema complex in downtown Tokyo.

Ito expressed relief that she could finally share her story with an audience in her home country.

"Until last night, I was afraid if the film is going to come out or not," she told The Associated Press after the screening. "The reason I made this film is because I want to talk about this issue openly in Japan. It's been like my little love letter to Japan, so I'm just so happy that this day came finally."

Ito, who went public with what she says happened to her in 2015, has become the face of Japan's slow moving #MeToo movement. She is the first Japanese director to be nominated for an Oscar in the category of documentary feature film. The film is based on a 2017 book she wrote, "Black Box."

    What happened in 2015
As an intern in 2015, Ito was seeking a position at private TBS Television and met one of its senior journalists, Noriyuki Yamaguchi, who became her alleged assailant. She has said in her book and film that she became dizzy... Read More
