    Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC, won his third career ASC Award for Feature Film Excellence, this time for Skyfall. Deakins topped a field of ASC Award feature nominees which also consisted of Danny Cohen, BSC, for Les Miserables, Janusz Kaminski for Lincoln, Claudia Miranda, ASC, for Life of Pi, and Seamus McGarvey, ASC, BSC for Anna Karenina….Iran-hostage drama Argo continued its journey from awards-season outsider to favorite Sunday, winning three prizes, including best-picture, at the British Academy Film Awards. Ben Affleck was named best director for the based-on-reality story of a longshot plan to rescue a group of American diplomats from Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and the film also took the editing trophy for William Goldenberg, A.C.E….Garth Davis, a director whose work spans commercials and television, has joined Reset for worldwide representation, excluding Australia and New Zealand, where he remains with his long-time company Exit Films….David Mamet, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright (Glengary Glen Ross) and twice Oscar-nominated writer (for screenplays for Wag The Dog and The Verdict), has come aboard the directorial roster of Aero Film for commercial representation…….

    Framestore-CFC, London, won the Visual Effects Society (VES) Award for outstanding effects in a commercial on the strength of Smirnoff’s “Sea” directed by Daniel Kleinman of Rattling Stick, London, for JWT London. This marks the fourth time in the six-year history of the VES competition that Framestore has topped the spot category…Animation studio Acme Filmworks, Hollywood, won the Annie Award in the commercials category for Power Shares’ “Escape Average.” Acme’s Dave Wasson directed the spot for Euro RSCG, Chicago. This marks the third time in the last four years that Acme Filmworks has won the Annie Award for best commercial…Passion Pictures, London, has launched Strange Beast, a company that will rep an international roster of emerging filmmaking talent, including Encyclopedia Pictura, Amautalab, Lorenzo Fonda, The Blackheart Gang, Takeo, and James Price. Strange Beast will be based on Passion’s U.K. premises and run by former freelance agency producer Nicola Finn…Joanne Ferraro has been named executive producer of Beat, New York. She comes over from NY editorial house Bluerock where she served as EVP, running day-to-day operations….

    Paul Thomas Anderson Wins Marquee Feature Honor At DGA Awards For “One Battle After Another”

    Paul Thomas Anderson won the marquee feature prize at the 78th Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards on Saturday night (2/7) for One Battle After Another. This makes Anderson the frontrunner to win the Best Director Oscar. Only eight times over the past 77 years has the DGA Award winner not gone on to win the Academy Award. That happened most recently in 2020 when Sam Mendes won the DGA Award for 1917 while Bong Joon-ho scored the Oscar for Parasite. Anderson topped a field of DGA nominees which also included Ryan Coogler for Sinners, Guillermo del Toro for Frankenstein, Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, and Chloé Zhao for Hamnet. In his acceptance speech, Anderson paid tribute to his first assistant director Adam Somner, who died in 2024. Anderson described Somner as someone who took his work “so seriously” but “did not take himself seriously at all”--that was part of his beauty. Anderson affirmed that Somner was “a great AD” who “made us feel safe,” mitigating the hazards that often accompany ambitious production. Anderson wished other directors in the audience a colleague like Somner. And if they already have one, Anderson advised them to hold that AD close in love and appreciation. The other DGA theatrical motion picture award--named after the late filmmaker Michael Apted in recognition of outstanding achievement by a first-time feature director--went to Charlie Polinger for The Plague.
