Goodby Silverstein & Partners’ CCO Margaret Johnson Named Judging Chair of 2024 AICP Next Awards

    Margaret Johnson
    NEW YORK --

Margaret Johnson, chief creative officer and partner at Goodby Silverstein & Partners (GS&P), has been named as the 2024 AICP Next Awards judging chair. In this role, Johnson has assembled a roster of jury presidents who will, in turn, select judges for all AICP Next Awards categories.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be serving as the 2024 AICP Next Awards Judging Chair,” said Johnson. “It’s a competition that focuses on work that defies convention and points to the future of advertising innovation. And the work honored is preserved in the archives of The Museum of Modern Art’s Department of Film for future generations to study. This is a big deal for me, and I think for the other judges as well. It’s also unique in its emphasis of production and craft, both in the work considered and in the makeup of the juries.”

The AICP Next Awards recognize outstanding work and the creative forces behind it, but are much more than an awards competition–Next is a platform for thought leadership and analysis.

“It’s gratifying when we get a leader of Margaret’s stature to serve as judging chair, since this competition was founded to recognize the kind of work people like her have been associated with throughout their careers,” said Matt Miller, AICP president and CEO. “Since the Next Awards debuted, work from Goodby Silverstein & Partners has consistently been honored, most recently with several pieces last year. To have Margaret  at the helm of the Next judging process, and selecting peers which she’s hand-picked, ensures that only work that’s truly worthy will be recognized.”

A 25-year veteran of GS&P, Johnson leads the storied agency’s creative department, a position she assumed in 2015, after being named a partner in 2012. In 2016 she was named the agency’s first chief creative officer.

A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill, where she majored in journalism and mass communications, she pivoted to art direction, which she studied at the Portfolio Center in Atlanta, before launching her agency career at Leonard, Monahan, Lubars & Kelly in Rhode Island. She later joined The Richards Group (now TRG) before heading West to San Francisco to join Goodby Silverstein.

The 2024 AICP Next Awards Jury Presidents & Curators at Large
As judging chair, Johnson was tasked with identifying a range of industry professionals to serve as jury presidents. She said her criteria was relatively simple: “It’s a little bit like Ocean’s Eleven. We’ve pulled together an eclectic team of experts, each of whom will bring a specific expertise and a unique perspective to the process of guiding their respective juries.”

She added that her tenure at GS&P, an agency well familiar with breaking the mold, will be of added benefit to work with this panel: “At GS&P we don’t subscribe to one specific style–we work at the speed of culture. For AICP, I’ll be working hard to make sure the work reflects what’s happening in the real world.”

The 2024 Next Awards jury presidents will each, in turn, select the judges for their respective categories. The lineup includes:

    • Jeff Benjamin, chief creative officer, Tombras (Experiential)
    • Keith Cartwright, founder/chief creative officer, CARTWRIGHT (Integrated Campaign)
    • Brian Coate, executive producer, Meta (Innovation)
    • Chloe Gottlieb, founder, DesignMeCo (Creative Data)
    • Lauren Greenfield, founder/director, Institute (Purpose Driven)
    • Genie Gurnani, head of brand editorial & social creative, The Walt Disney Company – Freeform (Influencer)
    • Judy John, global chief creative officer, Edelman (Digital Experiences)
    • Ari Kuschnir, founder/managing partner, m ss ng p ec es (Web Film)
    • David Shing, digital prophet, Shingy (Social)
    • Jimmy Smith, chairman/CEO/CCO, Amusement Park Entertainment (Branded Content & Entertainment)
    • Xanthe Wells, VP, global creative, Pinterest (Real Time Engagement)

Joining the jury presidents are a group of curators at large. They’ll work with the jury presidents to determine the final disposition of the AICP Next Awards, as well as select the Most Next (Best in Show) honor. This year’s curators at large include:

    • Jackie Kelman Bisbee, founding partner, Park Pictures
    • Hilary Coate, head of integrated production
    • Susan Credle, creative advisor, IPG
    • Scott Donaton, founder, Narrative Thread
    • Gerry Graf, co-founder & chief creative officer, Slapglobal
    • Greg Hahn, co-founder/chief creative officer, Mischief
    • Jeff Kling
    • Nick Law, creative chairperson, Accenture Song
    • Pum Lefebure, co-founder/chief creative officer, Design Army
    • Allen Mask, partner, West Cap/CöLab
    • Wes Phelan, executive creative director, Goodby Silverstein & Partners
    • Jaime Robinson, co-founder & chief creative officer, JOAN
    • Tiffany Rolfe, global chief creative officer, R/GA

Several curators at large previously served as AICP Next Awards judging chairs; that list includes Credle, Donaton, Graf, Hahn, Kling, Law, Robinson and Rolfe.

The call for entries for the AICP Next Awards is now open. To be eligible, work must have first aired or launched between March 13, 2023 and March 11th, 2024; full entry details can be found here.

The entry deadline for the AICP Next Awards, along with the AICP Show: The Art & Technique of the Commercial and the AICP Post Awards, is March 5. Details can be found here.

The results of each show will debut during AICP Week in New York, from June 4 to June 6, and be featured at a gala celebration at The Museum of Modern Art on June 6, 2024.

The work of the AICP Next Awards winners, along with that of the honorees of the AICP Show, becomes a part of the archives of The Department of Film at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, where it can be studied by future generations and is available for use or exhibition by the museum’s curators.

After Delay Over Legal Issues, Oscar-Nominated Documentary “Black Box Diaries” Finally Premieres In Japan

    Friday, December 12, 2025

"Black Box Diaries," a documentary in which Japanese journalist Shiori Ito investigates her own sexual assault case and the barriers she faced in pursuing justice, has been screened widely abroad since its 2024 festival debut and earned an Oscar nomination early this year.

It finally premiered in Japan on Friday, a long-delayed domestic release that began with a single-theater run.

In Japan, sexual assault victims are often stigmatized and silenced. But the barrier to the film's release at home was largely the result of a legal dispute over her use of some interviews and footage of witnesses and involved parties without their consent.

The 102-minute film was screened to a full house on Friday at the T. Joy Prince Shinagawa, a large cinema complex in downtown Tokyo.

Ito expressed relief that she could finally share her story with an audience in her home country.

"Until last night, I was afraid if the film is going to come out or not," she told The Associated Press after the screening. "The reason I made this film is because I want to talk about this issue openly in Japan. It's been like my little love letter to Japan, so I'm just so happy that this day came finally."

Ito, who went public with what she says happened to her in 2015, has become the face of Japan's slow moving #MeToo movement. She is the first Japanese director to be nominated for an Oscar in the category of documentary feature film. The film is based on a 2017 book she wrote, "Black Box."

    What happened in 2015
As an intern in 2015, Ito was seeking a position at private TBS Television and met one of its senior journalists, Noriyuki Yamaguchi, who became her alleged assailant. She has said in her book and film that she became dizzy... Read More
