    “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” “Guardians Of The Galaxy” Win 2 Honors Apiece At Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards

    "Birdman" picks up Best Contemporary Hair Styling Award in Feature Film category

    LOS ANGELES --

    The Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (MUAHS, IATSE Local 706) tonight announced and honored winners of its Annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards in 19 categories of film, television, commercials and live theater during the black-tie ceremony at the Paramount Studios Theatre. In the feature film competition, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Guardians Of The Galaxy each earned two wins.

    The Grand Budapest Hotel topped the Best Period and/or Character Make-Up category (make-up artists Frances Hannon and Julie Dartnell) as well as the Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling competition (Hannon & Dartnell).

    Guardians Of The Galaxy won for Best Contemporary Make-Up (makeup artist Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou) and for Best Special Make-Up Effects (make-up artist David White).

    Rounding out the feature winners was Birdman for Best Contemporary Hair Styling (hair stylists Jerry Popolis and Kat Drazen).

    The awards ceremony took place before an audience of more than 500, including guild members, industry executives and press. Sue Cabral-Ebert, president of the MUAHS, presided over the awards ceremony with Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs) serving as host.

    Golden Globe winner Ron Perlman (Sons of Anarchy) presented the Distinguished Artisan Award to his longtime friend and collaborator Guillermo Del Toro (Crimson Peak). Director John Landis presented the Make-Up Artist Lifetime Achievement Award to Oscar-winning make-up legend Rick Baker. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) President Cheryl Boone Isaacs presented the Hair Stylist Lifetime Achievement Award to Emmy Award-winning hair stylist Kathryn Blondell.

    Presenters for this year’s awards included Alfre Woodard (State of Affairs), Sarah Paulson and Jamie Brewer (American Horror Story: Freak Show), Darby Stanchfield (Scandal), Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Ethan Embry (Grace and Frankie), Raymond Cruz (Better Call Saul), Amy Landecker (Transparent), Beau Garrett (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce) and Jillian Rose Reed (Awkward).

    Duane “Keffe D” Davis’ Murder Trial Heads To Closing In Tupac Shakur’s 1996 Killing

    The murder trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur is headed to closing arguments after the defense rested Thursday following testimony from three former Las Vegas police officers.

    Jurors are scheduled to return Monday for closing arguments before beginning deliberations in the only prosecution brought in the killing of the hip-hop icon. The presentation of evidence ended after nine days of testimony.

    Davis, 63, did not take the stand.

    Shakur was riding in a BMW on Sept. 7, 1996, when a white Cadillac pulled up next to it at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip and gunfire erupted. Shakur was shot multiple times and died six days later. The driver of the BMW, Marion "Suge" Knight, survived.

    Years later, Davis would say he procured the gun and his nephew, who has since died, fired the shots. Prosecutors say Davis orchestrated the killing, and he faces life in prison if convicted of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang. He has pleaded not guilty.

    Defense attorney Michael Sanft has argued that Davis fabricated or embellished his accounts of the killing for money and notoriety and that investigators failed to independently corroborate his claims.

    Retired Las Vegas homicide detective Dan Long, the defense's final witness, testified that he tried unsuccessfully to verify several details Davis provided during a 2009 police interview.

    Davis told Long that his nephew, Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, had gone to a Las Vegas hospital after being beaten by Shakur and others in a casino brawl hours before the rapper was fatally shot. Long said he was unable to find hospital records confirming Anderson was treated there.
