IndependentMedia Signs Two-Time Oscar and BAFTA Nominee Phedon Papamichael

    Phedon Papamichael
    LOS ANGELES --

IndependentMedia has added cinematographer and director Phedon Papamichael to its directorial roster for commercials and branded content. Papamichael’s cinematography has garnered two Academy Award nominations (for Nebraska in 2014 and The Trial of the Chicago Seven in 2021) as well as a pair of BAFTA Film Award nods (for Ford v Ferrari on 2020, and Nebraska). He has more than 50 feature films to his credit–including 3:10 to Yuma, Sideways, Daddio, Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny, and The Descendants–and is a trusted collaborator to directors like Alexander Payne, James Mangold, George Clooney, and Aaron Sorkin.

Whether it’s Joaquin Phoenix baring his soul as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, Matt Damon and Christian Bale chasing glory at Le Mans in Ford v Ferrari, or Timothée Chalamet’s authentic portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, Papamichael’s images deliver a rare balance of intimacy and cinematic scope.

Born in Athens, Papamichael began his career as a photojournalist in New York, chasing raw, unguarded moments. Multilingual and never without a camera in his hand, he continues to lens the world with the eye of a storyteller, bringing an epic cinematic vocabulary to both features and commercials.

As a director, Papamichael approaches films with that same instinctive storytelling that thrives on tension, atmosphere, and character. His directorial debut was the mystery-thriller The Sketch Artist, starring Drew Barrymore, followed by the psychological horror feature From Within–which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival–Arcadia Lost starring Nick Nolte, and the award-winning short A Beautiful Day. Papamichael’s signature mix of cinematic style and human connection also defines his commercial work for Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Nescafé, Starbucks, Fuji, and Aegean Airlines.

“IndependentMedia is about creating great work and telling powerful stories,” said Papamichael. “They value my voice as an artist and want to uplift that in advertising. We clicked immediately–we share the same creative values, and I’m excited to be in such inspiring company.”

“Everyone who gets to work with Phedon lucks out,” added IndependentMedia founder and executive producer Susanne Preissler. “He brings a rare blend of mastery and vision–combining cinematic scope with intimate detail–to every project. Whether in commercials or feature films, Phedon is a director’s director, and we’re fortunate to have him with us at IndependentMedia.”

“Phedon helps create, allowing performers to expose something raw and unpredictable. He’s inquisitive and wonderful with actors,” said director Mangold who collaborated with Papamichael on such films as 3:10 to Yuma, Walk the Line, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Ford v. Ferrari, and A Complete Unknown.

After Delay Over Legal Issues, Oscar-Nominated Documentary “Black Box Diaries” Finally Premieres In Japan

    Friday, December 12, 2025

"Black Box Diaries," a documentary in which Japanese journalist Shiori Ito investigates her own sexual assault case and the barriers she faced in pursuing justice, has been screened widely abroad since its 2024 festival debut and earned an Oscar nomination early this year.

It finally premiered in Japan on Friday, a long-delayed domestic release that began with a single-theater run.

In Japan, sexual assault victims are often stigmatized and silenced. But the barrier to the film's release at home was largely the result of a legal dispute over her use of some interviews and footage of witnesses and involved parties without their consent.

The 102-minute film was screened to a full house on Friday at the T. Joy Prince Shinagawa, a large cinema complex in downtown Tokyo.

Ito expressed relief that she could finally share her story with an audience in her home country.

"Until last night, I was afraid if the film is going to come out or not," she told The Associated Press after the screening. "The reason I made this film is because I want to talk about this issue openly in Japan. It's been like my little love letter to Japan, so I'm just so happy that this day came finally."

Ito, who went public with what she says happened to her in 2015, has become the face of Japan's slow moving #MeToo movement. She is the first Japanese director to be nominated for an Oscar in the category of documentary feature film. The film is based on a 2017 book she wrote, "Black Box."

    What happened in 2015
As an intern in 2015, Ito was seeking a position at private TBS Television and met one of its senior journalists, Noriyuki Yamaguchi, who became her alleged assailant. She has said in her book and film that she became dizzy... Read More
