    Janet Yang Re-elected Motion Picture Academy President

    Producer Janet Yang has been re-elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by the organization’s Board of Governors.

    Also elected to officer positions by the Board:

    –Lesley Barber, VP (chair, Membership Committee)
    –DeVon Franklin, VP (chair, Equity and Inclusion Committee)
    –Donna Gigliotti, VP/treasurer (chair, Finance Committee)
    –Lynette Howell Taylor, VP (chair, Awards Committee)
    –Howard A. Rodman, VP/secretary (chair, Governance Committee)

    “I am thrilled to have Janet return as Academy president for a third term to continue our great work of the past two years,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer. “I also am so pleased to welcome this year’s incredible slate of dedicated board officers. I look forward to collaborating with our officers and governors to advance the Academy’s mission, serve our global membership, celebrate the work of our international filmmaking community, continue to ensure the financial health of the Academy, and broaden our reach and impact within the industry.”

    Yang is beginning her third term as president and her sixth year as a governor-at-large, a position for which she was nominated by the sitting Academy president and elected by the Board of Governors in 2019 and 2022. Franklin, Howell Taylor and Rodman were re-elected as officers. Gigliotti previously served as an officer. It will be the first officer stint for Barber.

    A member of the Academy’s Producers Branch since 2002, Yang has extensive film producing credits which include “South Central,” “The Joy Luck Club,” “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “Zero Effect,” “Savior,” “The Weight of Water,” “High Crimes” and the Oscar®-nominated animated feature “Over the Moon.” She won an Emmy® for the HBO film “Indictment: The McMartin Trial.”

    Academy board members may serve up to two three-year terms (consecutive or non-consecutive), followed by a two-year hiatus, after which eligibility renews for up to two additional three-year terms for a lifetime maximum of 12 years. Officers serve one-year terms, with a maximum of four consecutive years in any one office.

    The Board of Governors sets the Academy’s strategic vision, preserves the organization’s financial health and assures the fulfillment of its mission.

    Duane “Keffe D” Davis’ Murder Trial Heads To Closing In Tupac Shakur’s 1996 Killing

    The murder trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur is headed to closing arguments after the defense rested Thursday following testimony from three former Las Vegas police officers.

    Jurors are scheduled to return Monday for closing arguments before beginning deliberations in the only prosecution brought in the killing of the hip-hop icon. The presentation of evidence ended after nine days of testimony.

    Davis, 63, did not take the stand.

    Shakur was riding in a BMW on Sept. 7, 1996, when a white Cadillac pulled up next to it at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip and gunfire erupted. Shakur was shot multiple times and died six days later. The driver of the BMW, Marion "Suge" Knight, survived.

    Years later, Davis would say he procured the gun and his nephew, who has since died, fired the shots. Prosecutors say Davis orchestrated the killing, and he faces life in prison if convicted of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang. He has pleaded not guilty.

    Defense attorney Michael Sanft has argued that Davis fabricated or embellished his accounts of the killing for money and notoriety and that investigators failed to independently corroborate his claims.

    Retired Las Vegas homicide detective Dan Long, the defense's final witness, testified that he tried unsuccessfully to verify several details Davis provided during a 2009 police interview.

    Davis told Long that his nephew, Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, had gone to a Las Vegas hospital after being beaten by Shakur and others in a casino brawl hours before the rapper was fatally shot. Long said he was unable to find hospital records confirming Anderson was treated there.
