“Jeopardy!” Ready For Primetime; Nielsen Week In Review

    NEW YORK (AP) --

The "Jeopardy!" tournament matching the game show's three most accomplished and well-known players has proven to be a big hit for ABC, which clearly hopes the competition goes on as long as possible.

The three matches between Ken Jennings, James Holzhauer and Brad Rutter were each seen by roughly 15 million viewers last week, the Nielsen company said. And interest is building as the tournament goes on: Thursday's third match reached 15.5 million viewers on the night it aired, the biggest audience yet.

To put that in perspective, Fox averaged 14 million viewers last fall for baseball's World Series.

It's gratifying to ABC executives, but not necessarily a surprise.

"This felt as close to a sure thing as you're going to get in this business," said Rob Mills, senior vice president for alternative series, specials and late-night television at ABC, on Tuesday.

The emergence of Holzhauer last year, when he set several records for single-day earnings, gave "Jeopardy!' three well-known players with distinctive claims to fame: Rutter has earned more money than any player in the game's modern-day history and Jennings set the record for longest run as champion.

That made it a natural for ABC, which had been kicking around ideas for years about how to make a special primetime event for "Jeopardy!"

"You can argue that these are the biggest stars on television right now," Mills said.

Nostalgia for "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek, who's suffering from pancreatic cancer, has also made it attractive to viewers.

The success means it's likely you haven't seen the last of these three players in primetime. Mills said they're already kicking around ideas for other "Jeopardy!" events. The danger lies in becoming greedy and overdoing it, as ABC learned two decades ago when it essentially killed "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" by over-exposure.

The primetime event continues until one player wins three matches. Going into Tuesday's show, Jennings had won two matches and Holzhauer one.

CBS led the broadcast networks, averaging 9.5 million viewers in primetime last week, and Fox had 9.2 million as both networks were helped considerably by NFL playoff games. ABC averaged 5.4 million viewers, NBC had 4.2 million, Univision had 1.5 million, ION Television had 1.3 million, Telemundo had 840,000 and the CW had 690,000.

Fox News Channel was the most-watched cable network, averaging 3.16 million viewers in primetime. MSNBC had 1.7 million, TLC had 1.21 million, Hallmark had 1.15 million and HGTV had 1.08 million.

ABC's "World News Tonight" led the network evening newscasts with an average of 9.7 million viewers. NBC's "Nightly News" had 8.5 million and the "CBS Evening News" had 6.1 million.

For the week of Jan. 6-12, networks and viewerships were:

    1. NFL Playoffs: Seattle at Green Bay, Fox, 37.24 million.
    2. "NFL Post-Game Show (9:49 p.m. to 9:57 p.m.), Fox, 29.57 million.
    3. NFL Playoffs: Tennessee at Baltimore, CBS, 29.41 million.
    4. "NFL Post-Game Show (9:57 p.m. to 10:09 p.m.), Fox, 18.4 million.
    5. "Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time" (Match 3), ABC, 15.55 million.
    6. "Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time" (Match 2), ABC, 14.87 million.
    7. "Jeopardy! Greatest of All Time" (Match 1), ABC, 14.42 million.
    8. "NCIS," CBS, 10.4 million.
    9. "60 Minutes," CBS, 10.12 million.
    10. "FBI," CBS, 9.33 million.
    11. "America's Got Talent Champions," NBC, 8.07 million.
    12. "Chicago Fire," NBC, 7.95 million.
    13. "Blue Bloods," CBS, 7.91 million.
    14. "Hawaii Five-0," CBS, 7.68 million.
    15. "Young Sheldon," CBS, 7.57 million.
    16. "Chicago Med," NBC, 7.46 million.
    17. "FBI: Most Wanted," CBS, 7.2 million.
    18. "Magnum P.I.," CBS, 7.04 million.
    19. "Chicago PD," NBC, 7.02 million.
    20. "The Neighborhood," CBS, 6.86 million.

Sandra Oh, Kumail Nanjiani and Bowen Yang Are In Eugene Yi’s HBO Doc On Being Asian American, Pacific Islander

    Wednesday, May 13, 2026

Director Eugene Yi has always been interested in the term Asian American and Pacific Islander and which ethnicities it includes.

"When we're talking about Asian Americans or Asian people in the U.S., oftentimes it's people who might look like you and me, and maybe not people who look like (New York City Mayor) Zohran Mamdani," Yi told The Associated Press. "Why is that when this term is supposed to be so capacious and so inclusive?"

So Yi, who is Korean American, was beyond excited when approached to helm a new HBO documentary dedicated to AAPI identity and community.

Timed for release during AAPI Heritage Month, "The A List: 15 Stories from Asian and Pacific Diasporas" drops Wednesday on HBO Max. It's the latest in "The List Series" created by Timothy Greenfield-Sanders. The franchise has previously produced documentaries on prominent Black, Latino and LGBTQ+ Americans.

In the documentary, Yi captures no-frills, intimate interviews conducted by journalist Jada Yuan with 15 people of AAPI heritage across industries. They include TV broadcaster Connie Chung, Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth and "Basement Bhangra" creator DJ Rekha. Actors Sandra Oh, Kumail Nanjiani and Bowen Yang — who are sometimes more associated with comical roles — also shared their thoughts about identity and belonging.

"When talking to people who are professionally funny, oftentimes they're really comfortable not being funny," in unscripted conversation, Yi said. "I appreciated that chance to get a little bit deeper into some of their stories."
