    Longlists Unveiled For BAFTA Awards; 15 Features In The Running For Best Film

    BAFTA has revealed the longlists for the British Academy Film Awards in 2022.

    This long listing round was introduced in 2021 for the British Academy Film Awards resulting in three rounds of voting. Round One voting, which took place from December 10, 2021 to January 4, 2022, produced the longlists in all categories announced today (1/12). Every category in this round was voted on by a craft chapter, opt-in chapter or jury, with the exception of Best Film which was voted for by all film voting members.

    Round Two voting, which takes place from Friday, January 14, will determine the nominations which will be announced on Thursday, February 3. Round Three voting will take place from Wednesday, February 9 and will determine the winners, to be announced at the EE British Academy Film Awards on Sunday, March 13. The EE Rising Star Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday, February 1.

    Fifteen features made the longlist for Best Film: Being the Ricardos, Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Dune, House of Gucci, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, No Time To Die, The French Dispatch, The Lost Daughter, The Power of the Dog, The Tragedy of Macbeth, tick…tick…Boom! and West Side Story.

    BAFTA Film Committee chair Anna Higgs said: “2021 continued to be a difficult year for so many, including the film industry with cinemas in the UK remaining closed until May last year and shoots continually adapting to restrictions.  Throughout the ongoing uncertainty, BAFTA has remained dedicated to making the Awards fairer for entrants, to celebrate excellence, and support a more inclusive industry.  We are delighted to announce this year’s longlist: such an exciting range of films, different genres and incredible performances being recognised is a real testament to the strength, ingenuity and resilience of our crews, talent and filmmakers.” 

    BAFTA chair Krishnendu Majumdar said: “The breadth of films and talent recognised in the longlist announced today shows the enduring creativity and resilience of the film industry against a backdrop of more challenges and uncertainty over the last year.  At the same time BAFTA has made considerable changes to our rules and voting processes to level the playing field for all film awards entries and importantly to ensure more titles are watched by more voters.  While nothing beats the theatrical experience of watching a film on the big screen, this year all titles have been made available to members on BAFTA View which has seen voters watching more films on average than previous years as well as a significant increase in the number of views of films overall, with over 134,000 streams already before we begin the second round of voting.  This is a positive step in our work to promote and enable a more inclusive, accessible and sustainable industry and I’m encouraged by the support of our members in the changes we’ve made and cannot wait to find out the nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards.”

    Duane “Keffe D” Davis’ Murder Trial Heads To Closing In Tupac Shakur’s 1996 Killing

    The murder trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis in the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur is headed to closing arguments after the defense rested Thursday following testimony from three former Las Vegas police officers.

    Jurors are scheduled to return Monday for closing arguments before beginning deliberations in the only prosecution brought in the killing of the hip-hop icon. The presentation of evidence ended after nine days of testimony.

    Davis, 63, did not take the stand.

    Shakur was riding in a BMW on Sept. 7, 1996, when a white Cadillac pulled up next to it at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip and gunfire erupted. Shakur was shot multiple times and died six days later. The driver of the BMW, Marion "Suge" Knight, survived.

    Years later, Davis would say he procured the gun and his nephew, who has since died, fired the shots. Prosecutors say Davis orchestrated the killing, and he faces life in prison if convicted of murder with a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further or assist a criminal gang. He has pleaded not guilty.

    Defense attorney Michael Sanft has argued that Davis fabricated or embellished his accounts of the killing for money and notoriety and that investigators failed to independently corroborate his claims.

    Retired Las Vegas homicide detective Dan Long, the defense's final witness, testified that he tried unsuccessfully to verify several details Davis provided during a 2009 police interview.

    Davis told Long that his nephew, Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, had gone to a Las Vegas hospital after being beaten by Shakur and others in a casino brawl hours before the rapper was fatally shot. Long said he was unable to find hospital records confirming Anderson was treated there.
