    HOLLYWOOD, Calif. --

During a gala ceremony on Sunday night (2/18), the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild (IATSE Local 706) unveiled the winners of its 11th Annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Awards spanning 23 categories of film, television, commercials, and live theater.

Winners in the feature film categories included “Maestro,” “Saltburn,” “Barbie,” and “The Idol.” Among the TV series winners were “The Crown,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show,” “Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story,” and “Dancing with the Stars.”

Winners in the daytime TV category awards went to “The Young and the Restless” and “The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula.” Children/Teen Program honors went to “American Born Chinese” and “The Santa Clauses.” The theatrical award was bestowed upon “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical.” The commercial/music video award was presented to “American Horror Stories: Delicate” promo.

The MUAHS Awards occurred before a sold-out audience of more than 850, including guild members, industry executives and press. Actress Melissa Peterman hosted the lively event. TV personality and professional dancer Val Chmerkovskiy (“Dancing with the Stars”) hosted the red-carpet pre-show. Julie Socash, Local 706 president, and Karen Westerfield, business representative, presided over the awards ceremony.

Diane Nyad, the celebrated long-distance swimmer and subject of “Nyad,” presented the MUAHS Distinguished Artisan Award to legendary actress Annette Bening, whose most recent Academy Award® nomination is for her starring role in “Nyad.” As a Tony® Award and five-time Academy Award® nominee, and two-time Golden Globe®, and Screen Actors Guild® Award winner, Bening was feted for her consistent collaboration with Local 706 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists and has richly enhanced and created memorable characters throughout her career.

The Vanguard Award was bestowed upon Michael Westmore, Oscar®- and Emmy®-winning make-up artist known for his iconic work on “Rocky,” “Star Trek,” “Mask” and “Raging Bull.” Westmore’s illustrious career spans over five decades and has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry. From the breathtaking beauty of Elizabeth Taylor to the bloody Rocky series, to the Romulans in Star Trek, Westmore’s artistry has captivated audiences and set the standard for make-up and hair styling in film and television. Presenting the award to Westmore were “Star Trek” stars Terry Farrell (“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”) and Armin Shimerman (“Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”), both also producing a documentary on Michael Westmore’s career.

Kevin Haney, Oscar- and Emmy-winning make-up artist best known for his work on “Driving Miss Daisy,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Hocus Pocus 2,” received the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Tony- and  Emmy-winning actor Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”), who collaborated with Haney on “Primetime Glick” as Jiminy Glick and on Broadway including ”Fame Becomes Me,” “The Big Lie” and “Into the Woods.”

Ora T. Green, Emmy-nominated hairstylist known for her work on “Star Trek: Nemesis,” “Blade” and “Good Times,” was bestowed the Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by Emmy- and Grammy-winning veteran “Star Trek” actor LeVar Burton, who worked with Green on “Star Trek: Nemesis,” and Marla Gibbs (“The Jeffersons”), a fellow Norman Lear comedy trailblazer since the 1980s.

Another highlight of the evening was a moving “In Memoriam” segment performed by long-time Local 706 member Angie Wells. Returning as producers of this year’s MUAHS Awards were IngleDodd Media and Erick Weiss of Honeysweet Creative.

Review: Writer-Director James L. Brooks’ “Ella McCay”

    Wednesday, December 10, 2025

"I can't trust my brain right now," says our hero, Ella, deep into James L. Brooks' bafflingly disjointed, uneven, unfunny and illogical "Ella McCay." And finally, nearly two hours into a perplexing muddle of a storyline, we have some clarity of thought. No, dear, we want to tell Ella, played by the lovely Emma Mackey, who is truly the only reason to watch any of this. No, your brain is fine (and by the way, what a depressing line to put in the mouth of your most intelligent character — a hard-working woman in politics). It's your script you can't trust, Ella! Run away from it. Now. It's hard to understand how "Ella McCay," the first original feature from writer-director Brooks in 15 years, goes so utterly haywire. Is this really the same mind that wrote the memorable "Broadcast News"? "Terms of Endearment"? "As Good As It Gets"? We get a bit of a hint in the studio's press notes, which mention that Brooks began his script "without a specific storyline in mind." Hmm. Perhaps that (unintentionally) explains this tangle of half-baked characters and subplots — each more head-scratching than the next, but also boring — and an ending that's unbelievable, by which we mean not believable. What's even less believable is that smart supporting actors like Jamie Lee Curtis, Ayo Edebiri, Woody Harrelson and Rebecca Hall didn't walk out in protest of a lack of coherence. (Well, actually, Hall is gone in a matter of minutes.) The main action takes place over three days in 2008, in an unnamed state. An aggressively folksy Julie Kavner as narrator tells us Ella is a great person, and super-bright, and at 34, one of the youngest people to serve as lieutenant governor. She's also a moral compass — both in the dog-eat-dog world of politics, where she just wants... Read More
