"Soul" is the top animated contender with 5 noms; "Project Power" and "The Witches" score 3 nods each in feature competition

    LOS ANGELES --

The Visual Effects Society (VES) has unveiled the nominees for the 19th Annual VES Awards, the yearly celebration that recognizes outstanding visual effects artistry and innovation in film, animation, television, commercials and video games–and the VFX supervisors, VFX producers and hands-on artists who bring this work to life.

The Mandalorian garners the most nominations and leads the broadcast field with 13 nominations. Soul is the top animated film contender with five nominations. Project Power and The Witches score three feature nominations each. Nominees in 25 categories were selected by VES members via 32 virtual nomination events conducted across the globe.

Given the state of the pandemic and our commitment to health and safety, this year, the VES Awards are being produced virtually.  The program will stream worldwide on April 6 or 7, depending on the time zone.

“Traditions find a way to persist,” said Lisa Cooke, VES Board chair.  “With vision and a lot of hard work, we are proud to host our annual celebration of the artistry, ingenuity and passion of visual effects practitioners around the world – virtually.  We are seeing best in class work that elevates the art of storytelling and engages the audience in new and innovative ways.  The VES Awards is the only venue that showcases and honors these outstanding artists across a wide range of disciplines, and we are extremely proud of all our nominees!”

“Autodesk is proud to sponsor the Visual Effects Society Student Award for a 12th year, supporting incredible up-and-coming talent in the VFX and animation industry,” said Jocelyn Moffatt, entertainment industry marketing manager, Autodesk. “In a year fraught with disruption and adapting to new ways of learning and collaborating remotely, it is truly inspiring to see the level of creativity and ingenuity in each of every one of this year’s student submissions. Autodesk extends a huge congratulations to this year’s nominees.”

“No Good Men” and “Only Rebels Win” Bring Love From Unexpected Places To Berlin Film Fest

    Thursday, February 12, 2026

A surprising and touching Afghan political rom-com that is said to feature the first ever on-screen kiss in an Afghan movie opens the 76th Berlin Film Festival Thursday.

Set in a Kabul newsroom in 2021, with the Taliban on the cusp of returning to power, "No Good Men" tells the workplace love story of camerawoman Naru, separated from her cheating husband and struggling to keep custody of her young son while trying to build a career in a male dominated industry and patriarchal society.

Director Shahrbanoo Sadat said the kissing scene cost her lead actor three weeks before shooting began, and forced her to step into the role herself.

"The joke was everyone who wanted to play Naru, they didn't want to do the kissing, I wanted to do the kissing, I didn't want to do the rest of the film," Sadat said.

And it wasn't just the casting that was met with resistance. The Afghan film industry is small, she said, so the expectation is that the movie will be "good PR" for the country.

Sadat had her own ideas, though.

"I love Afghanistan, but I cannot close my eyes to patriarchy, sexism, all the big topics, and just say the good things about Afghanistan, so I'm disappointing my people," she said.

Making an Afghan film in Europe, with European funding, she also felt added pressure to be a political and feminist filmmaker or make a war movie.

Sadat received multiple letters of complaint from funders who said it was inappropriate for them to support a rom-com given the political situation in Afghanistan.

"For me it was like, wait a minute, what? I feel offended that you feel offended about my project," she said. "I'm coming from a war country, and this is my way of expressing myself, to go through the oceans of... Read More
