    KINSALE, Ireland --

Winners have been unveiled for the 2021 Sharks advertising and design awards, with a record five Grand Prixs (two for the same work) bestowed along with 39 gold shark heads trophies.

In Advertising, Iconoclast (director Jonathan Alric) and Stitch Editing (editor Nicolas Larrouquere) both won a Grand Prix for their entries for Macmillan Cancer Support’s “Whatever it Takes” from AMV BBDO in London while Toronto agency Zulu Alpha Kilo garnered a Grand Prix for Tough Turban developed for Pfaff Harley-Davidson.

Another two were awarded in Design to BigO for its “Cork 1920: The Burning of a city” exhibition for St Peters Cork, and to BBDO Guerrero for “The Dissolving Bottle” for Naturale Market.

Zulu Alpha Kilo was awarded Agency of The Year, Riff Raff and Biscuit Filmworks both scooped up joint Production Company of the Year and Factory won Sound Design Company of the Year.

BBDO Dublin won Irish Agency of The Year, Banjoman was awarded Irish Production Company of the Year, and Pirhana Bar won Irish VFX Company of the Year.

Thirty-nine golds were awarded across the film, film craft, design, design craft, digital and radio categories.

Film gold highlights included Tokyo Paralympics “Super Human” from 4Creative, Macmillan’s “Whatever it Takes” from Iconoclast, and Burberry’s “Festive” from Riff Raff.

In film craft, golds were awarded for direction, animation, art direction, cinematography, fashion directing, writing, VFX, editing, color grading, use of stock footage, child direction, performance, title sequence, casting, animation, original music, sound mixing, use of licensed music, use of humor and sound design.

L.A. Ronayne, Shark Awards jury president and group creative director of Anomaly, said, “Thirty-nine gold Shark trophies are on their way to well-deserved homes. It’s an increase from last year, but all hard won. The juries debated like champs, but the standard of craft and creativity has been exceptional. It’s a thrill for the world to be inspired by all the winners.”

Video Game Performers Ratify Contract To End Nearly Yearlong Strike

    Wednesday, July 9, 2025

Unionized video game performers have overwhelmingly voted to approve a new contract with their employers. The vote, whose results were announced Wednesday night by the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, ends a nearly three-year-long effort from union negotiators to obtain a new contract for the performers. The process, which included an 11-month strike against several major game makers, hinged on how artificial intelligence would affect performers in the industry. SAG-AFTRA said 95% of the members who voted favored ratification. The new contract delivers pay raises, control over performers' likenesses and artificial intelligence protections. A tentative contract agreement was first reached in early June between the union and an industry bargaining group consisting of several major video game companies, including Activision, Disney and Electronic Arts. Video game performers "endured a great deal of sacrifice throughout the 11-month strike," Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the SAG-AFTRA national executive director and chief negotiator said in a press release announcing the results. "Now that the agreement is ratified, video game performers will be able to enjoy meaningful gains and important A.I. protections, which we will continue to build on as uses of this technology settle and evolve," Crabtree-Ireland wrote. Audrey Cooling, a spokesperson for the video game producers involved in the deal, wrote that the agreement "delivers historic wage increases, industry-leading A.I. protections, and enhanced health and safety measures for performers." "We look forward to building on our industry's decades-long partnership with the union and continuing to create groundbreaking entertainment experiences for billions of players... Read More
