    LOS ANGELES --

The Lighthouse and Uncut Gems each scored five Film Independent Spirit Award nominations, topping the field. They were followed by Give Me Liberty and Honey Boy which earned four nods apiece.

Nominated for Best Feature are A Hidden Life, Clemency, The Farewell, Marriage Story and Uncut Gems.

In the running for Best Director are: Alma Har’el for Honey Boy; Lorene Scafaria for Hustlers; Julius Onah for Luce; Robert Eggers for The Lighthouse; and Benny Safdie & Josh Safdie for Uncut Gems.

Best First Feature nominations went to director Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart, Michael Angelo Covino’s The Climb, Kent Jones’ Diane, Joe Talbot’s The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s The Mustang, and Stefon Bristol’s See You Yesterday.

Up for Best Documentary are American Factory, Apollo 11, For Sama, Honeyland, and Island of the Hungry Ghosts.

And Noah Bambuch’s Marriage Story was selected to receive the Robert Altman Award, which is bestowed upon one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast. The Altman Award was created in 2008 in honor of legendary director Robert Altman who was known for creating extraordinary ensemble casts.

Winners, who are selected by Film Independent members, will be revealed and honored at the Spirit Awards on Saturday, February 8, 2020. The awards ceremony will be held on the beach in Santa Monica, just north of the Santa Monica Pier. The show will be broadcast live exclusively on IFC at 2pm PT/ 5pm ET. This marks the 35th anniversary of the awards show.

“The Film Independent Spirit Awards celebrate the best films of the year–films characterized by creative independence and original, provocative subject matter, as well as diversity, innovation and uniqueness of vision,” said Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent. “At a time when the film business is undergoing such change and challenges, it’s important to loudly celebrate the work itself–the films!–and to recognize 2019 as a year of bold, audacious and accomplished filmmaking. That’s what the Spirit Awards are all about.”

Welsh added, “The Spirit Awards are a unique awards show in that the winners are chosen by the members of Film Independent, an open access organization made up of film lovers and filmmakers alike. To everyone who cares about film and who wants to help shine a bright light on the great work being made today, I urge you to join Film Independent by December 5 and become part of our voting body!”

The Spirit Awards Nominating Committees selected nominees from over 430 submissions this year and applied the following guidelines in determining the nominations: uniqueness of vision, original and provocative subject matter, economy of means. The Spirit Awards Nominating Committees are comprised of writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, actors, critics, casting directors, film festival programmers and other working film professionals. Winners of the Spirit Awards Filmmaker Grants will be announced at the Film Independent Spirit Awards Filmmaker Grant and Nominee Brunch on Saturday, January 4, 2020.

Oscar Nominations Snubs and Surprises: Biggest Oversights Include Paul Mescal and Ariana Grande

After such a strong year for movies, the brutal limitations of Oscar nominations were bound to have some big omissions. But there were several genuine shockers Thursday morning, including widely expected nominees like Ariana Grande and Paul Mescal missing out on nods in their respective acting categories. In some cases, that meant room for long overdue recognition, as with Delroy Lindo, who earned his first nomination for "Sinners." Here are the biggest snubs and surprises: SNUB: Ariana Grande and "Wicked: For Good" "Wicked" got a staggering 10 nominations last year, and yet its much darker sequel, "Wicked: For Good," ended up with zero. That's possibly because the film wasn't as well received as the first by critics — but most still thought that Grande would snag another supporting nomination for her effervescent Glinda. It also means that Cynthia Erivo was left out of best actress, though she wasn't on many prediction lists this time around, and that it was roundly rejected for both crafts and — with two new, original options — song (yet somehow Diane Warren still managed to get through again). SURPRISE: Delroy Lindo, "Sinners" One of the best surprises of the morning was Lindo's supporting actor nod for playing the hard-drinking blues great Delta Slim in "Sinners." It's his first ever Oscar nomination and long overdue. But his inclusion also meant that another "sure thing" didn't make it. SNUB: Paul Mescal, "Hamnet" That seemingly sure thing was Mescal, who delivered an achingly poignant performance as the grieving father William Shakespeare in "Hamnet." It would have been his second Oscar nomination; in 2023, he was recognized for playing another sad father in "Aftersun." SNUB:... Read More
