Filmmaker recently earned a slot in SHOOT's 2017 New Directors Showcase

    NEW YORK --

Carrie Stett–who recently earned inclusion in this year’s SHOOT New Directors Showcase on the strength of her heartwarming “A Caring Chorus” piece for Kleenex–has secured her first career commercial production house representation, joining the directorial roster of Washington Square Films (WSF). Stett also helmed the powerful Kleenex spot “Unlikely Best Friends” which earned an ANA Multicultural Award. The entire Kleenex campaign, “Somebody Needs One,” earned an Effie Award and was shortlisted for a Cannes Lion.

With a background as a reality television producer, Stett fuses authenticity and a visually driven narrative approach to her endeavors as a director. Her work has reached viral status taking in over 120 millions views combined. She has worked with social media influencers and brands to create shows for Disney/ABC, Yahoo!, Univision, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube and has worked for such top brands as Toyota, JCPenney, Jell-O, Revlon,  Facebook and US Cellular.

“Washington Square Films has a very familial boutique vibe and their slate of docu-style storytelling is really impressive,” noted Stett. “They have such a great reputation as a company and their feature division really adds an interesting element.”

Jonathan Schwartz, WSF’s head of marketing and sales, said, “I was blown away by the emotion and storytelling in Carrie’s work. Her work is incredibly moving. On top of that she has infused hidden camera and surprise elements in her work and always captured the big moment perfectly.”

After studying Communications at Emerson College, Louisiana native Stett made her way out to Los Angeles and eventually landed at the Tennis Channel, where she wrote and produced the travel and interview series Open Access. She continued to write and produce a wide range of unscripted series work, organically shifting into directing while working at ABC Studios. She directed and produced the digital comedy series General Hospital Now!, the comedic companion series hosted by Nancy Lee Grahn, which generated renewed interest in the soap. Stett also brought her storytelling skills to Univision’s Drop the Mic with Becky G, which documented the Latina pop sensation’s early days as her career was taking off. The series was nominated for a 2014 Cablefax Award.

As a writer, Stett was a semifinalist in the 2015 and 2012 Austin Film Festival screenplay competitions, and a finalist in the 2013 Screencraft Comedy TV Pilot Launch contest.

Aleshea Harris’ “Is God Is”: A Primal Scream Of A Movie Inspired By Westerns and Greek Tragedy

    Tuesday, May 19, 2026

Aleshea Harris wrote "Is God Is" with the assumption that it would never be performed as a play, let alone turned into a movie. It was simply a story she needed to get onto the page: A tale of rage and revenge, an ancient Greek tragedy melded with Spaghetti Western tropes centered on contemporary Black women, twins, on an epic, violent journey to find the father who wronged them. She even rewatched Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" while she was writing.

"I've endured so many narratives in which Black women, they're just sort of downtrodden victims, you know? They endure, they gain their strength and we love them because look at what all she can take. I think that's horrific," Harris said in a recent interview. "This was my antidote to that. This was my medicine to myself for that."

That's the thing about art that boldly flies in the face of taboo and stereotypes; Sometimes, it turns out, it's on to something that audiences have been craving too. The Obie-winning stage play, which debuted off-Broadway in 2018, hit a nerve with audiences and critics, garnering comparisons to Tarantino and Martin McDonagh. Soon, talks of a feature film were underway. Harris never thought she'd be the one to direct it, having barely even been on a set before, but producer Janicza Bravo and their mutual friend, playwright Jeremy O. Harris, had other ideas: It was her story after all, she should be the one to tell it.

"It really was like the belief of those folks and that invitation," Harris said. "It was like a switch being flipped. Of course, of course I'm in."

The film, which is now playing in theaters, has garnered similarly effusive praise from critics and audiences. It stars Kara Young and Mallori Johnson as badly scarred twins who, after fending for... Read More
