"The Novice" scores 5 nods; "The Lost Daughter," "Wild Indian" tally 4 apiece

    LOS ANGELES --

Zola topped the Film Independent Spirit Awards with seven nominations spanning the Best Feature, Director (Janicza Bravo), Screenplay (Bravo and Jeremy O. Harris), Cinematography (Ari Wegner), Editing (Joi McMillon), Female Lead (Taylour Paige) and Supporting Male (Colman Domingo) categories.

Close behind with five nods was The Novice for Best Feature, Director (Lauren Hadaway), Editing (Hadaway and Nathan Nugent), Female Lead (Isabelle Fuhrman) and Supporting Female (Amy Forsyth).

Tied with 4 nominations apiece were: The Lost Daughter for Best Feature, Director and Screenplay (both for Maggie Gyllenhaal) and Best Supporting Female (Jessie Buckley); and Wild Indian for Best First Feature (director/producer Lyle Mitchell Corbine, Jr.), Best First Screenplay (Corbine, Jr.), Male Lead (Michael Greyeyes) and Supporting Male (Chaske Spencer).

In addition to The Lost Daughter, The Novice and Zola, the Best Feature nominees were A Chiara and C’mon C’mon.

Mass was selected to receive the Robert Altman Award, which is bestowed upon one film’s director, casting director and ensemble cast. The Altman Award was created in 2008 in honor of legendary director Robert Altman, who was known for creating extraordinary ensemble casts.

On the TV side, nominated for Best Scripted Series were Blindspotting, It’s a Sin, Reservation Dogs, The Underground Railroad and We Are Lady Parts.

The distributors tally was led by A24 with 13 nominations (seven for Zola, three for C’mon C’mon, two for Red Rocket and one for The Humans), nine for Neon (three for A Chiara, two apiece for Pig and Pleasure, one each for Petite Maman and Flee), nine for Netflix (four for The Lost Daughter, two for Passing, and one apiece for Prayers for the Stolen, Procession and Squid Game, eight for IFC Films (five for The Novice, one each for Catch the Fair One, Holler and The Nowhere Inn, and seven for HBO/HBO Max (two for the series It’s a Sin, and one each The Lady and the Dale, Black and Missing, The White Lotus, Nuclear Family and In the Same Breath).

Celebrating creative independence, original, provocative subject matter, diversity, innovation and uniqueness of vision, the 37th Film Independent Spirit Awards will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2022, positioning it squarely in the corridor leading into Oscar voting. Returning to its home on the Santa Monica beach, the in-person show will be broadcast exclusively on IFC. The Spirit Awards are the primary fundraiser for the nonprofit Film Independent’s year-round slate of programs, which cultivate the careers of emerging filmmakers and promote diversity and inclusion in the industry.

“Congratulations to this year’s nominees – visual storytellers who have made the most original, daring and provocative film and television shows of the year,” said Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent. “The Spirit Awards once again plants its flag on the beach at Santa Monica, and on IFC. We’re thrilled to be back and celebrating art that continues to inspire, enlighten and entertain us.”

This year the Spirit Awards Nominating Committees selected nominees from over 15 different countries. Of all nominated writers and directors, 44% are women and 38% are BIPOC. Of all nominated actors, 60% are BIPOC. And of all 2022 nominees, 46% are women and 32% are BIPOC. This year, the Spirit Awards nominating committees are 63% women, 5% Non-binary and 56% BIPOC.

Gravy Films Signs Director Victoria Rivera

Victoria Rivera (photo by Josefina Santos)

Gravy Films has added director Victoria Rivera to its roster. A Colombian filmmaker based in New York City, Rivera directs in both English and Spanish. Her emotionally resonant work has earned multiple Vimeo Staff Picks and premieres at top-tier film festivals. Her commercial work includes the AICP-nominated “Los Viejitos” for McDonald’s and the powerful Gold Telly Award-winning PSA “More Donors More Hope” for the HRSA, which encourages Hispanic communities to donate so that they can find life-saving genetic matches. Her adaptable skillset and emotive directorial sensibilities have been tapped by brands like Verizon, Google, NHTSA, Johnson & Johnson, Lysol, Neuriva, Blueprint Medicines, and The New Yorker to bring their commercial films to life. Prior to joining Gravy Films, Rivera had most recently been with SLMBR PRTY for commercial representation. Masterfully telling empathetic and powerful stories that center on young people, Rivera has turned out work such as the short film Night Swim which portrays a teen friend group’s night out, premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival. Lucia, the short film that tells the story of a seven-year-old girl in foster care, debuted at the Austin Film Festival and premiered on Short of the Week. Rivera’s other shorts include the narrative film Verde, the commissioned short The Longest Breath for Hulu and Disney+’s Bite Size Halloween series, the public service film Together We Rise for Vital Voices, as well as documentaries such as Amma, Skull + Bone, and Mapelo: An Expedition. “I’ve always believed the best work comes from curiosity, openness, and a deep love for the medium,” remarked Rivera. “My process is rooted...
