Dan Goldstein named chief strategy officer at Havas NY

NEW YORK -- 

Havas New York has appointed Dan Goldstein to serve as chief strategy officer. In this role, Goldstein reports to Havas New York CEO Laura Maness. He is charged with innovating and driving the overall strategic direction of Havas NY, while leveraging the agency’s bespoke Village model and Together strategy to strengthen its core and further build out its competitive tools, advanced tech capabilities, and IP. 

Goldstein’s arrival comes at an exciting time for the New York flagship office amid a series of recent new business wins. In January the agency won creative duties on Dream Bed by Mattress Firm, and earlier this month, RB handed back to the agency creative duties on its Air Wick and Clearasil accounts. Havas New York currently handles RB’s health and hygiene brands, including K-Y and Amopé, as well as household favorites like d-CON.

With 20 years of industry experience, Goldstein brings a blend of creatively driven agency and start-up experience to Havas, most recently as co-founder and chief strategy officer of Los Angeles based db5, a quantitative research consultancy and one of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the US, with such clients as Audi, Google, Lyft, McDonald’s, Twitter, and Ralph Lauren. Prior to db5, Goldstein was executive head of planning at TBWA\Chiat\Day, where he both built and led one of the industry’s largest strategy groups, servicing clients such as Pepsi, Gatorade, Visa, Nissan, and Infiniti. During his five-year tenure at TBWA, Goldstein was instrumental in the agency’s impressive new business wins, including the agency’s global Visa account, for which he led strategy and innovation; he was also a member of Chiat’s Executive Board Committee and management team. Prior to joining TBWA, he was group planning director at Goodby Silverstein & Partners in San Francisco, where he led the strategy for Saturn, Motorola, and the agency’s winning pitch for Sprint. Goldstein started his career at BBH London.

Craig Zerouni named head of technology, Deluxe VFX

LOS ANGELES -- 

Deluxe has named long-time media technology executive Craig Zerouni to serve as head of technology, Deluxe Visual Effects (VFX). In this role Zerouni will focus on continuing to unify software development and systems architecture across Deluxe’s Method studios in Los Angeles, Vancouver, New York, and India, and its Iloura studios in Sydney and Melbourne, as well as Deluxe VR, based in Los Angeles, to integrate and expand global production capacity.

Based in Los Angeles and reporting to president and GM of Deluxe VFX and VR Ed Ulbrich, Zerouni will lead VFX and VR R&D and software development teams and systems worldwide, working closely with technology teams across Deluxe’s Creative division to benefit from and contribute to the deep pool of IP, knowledge, and resources across the global Deluxe technology organization.

Ulbrich said, “Our VFX work serves both the features world, which is increasingly global, and the advertising community, which is increasingly local. Behind the curtain at Method, Iloura, and Deluxe in general, we have been working to integrate our studios to give clients the ability to tap into integrated global capacity, technology and talent anywhere in the world, while offering a high-quality local experience. Craig’s experience leading global technology organizations and distributed development teams, and building and integrating pipelines is right in line with our focus. He has done amazing work improving workflow and optimizing systems at VFX and animation companies of all sizes, and he’s a great team leader.”

Zerouni has been working in media technology and production for nearly three decades, joining Deluxe most recently from DreamWorks, where he was Director of Technology at its Bangalore, India facility overseeing all technology. Prior to that he spent nine years at Digital Domain, where he was first head of R&D responsible for software strategy and teams in five locations across three countries, then sr. director of technology overseeing all aspects of technology including software, systems, production technology, technical directors and media systems. He has also directed engineering, products and teams at software/tech companies Silicon Grail, Side Effects Software, and Critical Path, and was a co-founder of pioneering London computer animation company CFX. Zerouni’s work has contributed to features including TRON: Legacy, Iron Man 3, Maleficent, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Ender’s Game as well as more than 400 commercials, TV idents and titles. He is a member of BAFTA, ACM/SIGGRAPH, IEEE, the Visual Effects Society, has served on the AMPAS Digital Imaging Technology Subcommittee, and is the author of the technical reference book “Houdini on the Spot.”

Artists from Iloura have been recognized with Academy Award nominations for Visual Effects two years running, for Mad Max: Fury Road and Deepwater Horizon, and earned the 2016 VFX Emmy Award for work on Game of Thrones. Recent work from Method Studios includes VFX Academy Award-nominated Doctor Strange, along with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Captain America: Civil War, and award-winning commercials. Method is currently in production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur and other features and advertising projects.

Ileana Montalvo launches Award Queen

Award Queen, a consultancy specializing in working with production companies and agencies to strategically enter advertising awards shows, has launched. Headquartered in New York, the company was founded by Ileana Montalvo. Award Queen launches with Biscuit Filmworks, for which Montalvo and her team will handle entries for all awards shows.

Montalvo was most recently AICP’s director of events, where she oversaw the production of the AICP Show: The Art & Technique of the American Commercial and the AICP Next Awards. In addition to producing the events and judging for each competition, including the annual Curatorial meetings, she also managed the entry process.  “I noticed all too often opportunities were missed by entrants because the work was not placed to its best advantage.”

An industry vet, she knows all the pitfalls and crunches companies can encounter when entering the every-growing number of advertising awards shows.  “I’ve created flexible services to help companies feel confident that their work is being presented in the best light - saving them time and money.”

Funworks hires Andy Giles as its managing director

Andy Giles has been hired to serve as managing director of Funworks, a San Francisco ad agency that uses a blend of social science and sketch comedy to guide corporate executives to innovative creative quickly and cost-effectively. 

Giles has spent more than 15 years winning and delivering key branding and advertising engagements for shops including ATTIK and MetaDesign. He has worked with brands including Intel/McAfee, Toyota, Samsung, the New York Philharmonic, along with high-growth startups such as 23andMe and Automatic. In his new role as managing director at Funworks, Giles will be responsible for overseeing client relations, finance operations and business development.
 
Giles began his career at ATTIK where he helped launch Toyota’s Scion brand and led campaigns for Sony, Lexus, and the NFL. He also spent time at MetaDesign and Method, leading strategic branding and digital experience initiatives for clients ranging from tech startups to global brands.  Andy was a finalist for the Cannes Cyber Lions award, as well as a Webby Awards finalist, and a winner of the MI6 Integrated Campaign Gold Award.
 
Funworks is rapidly expanding and in his new role, Giles will be instrumental in scaling the firm to meet the needs of increased client demand. Funworks has produced high profile work for clients such as Pandora, SodaStream, Ubisoft, Credit Karma, Virgin America, Microsoft, HP and Clorox.

He joins Smoke & Mirrors’ NY office from Psyop where he served as the associate head of production for the past two years, following stints at Panda Panther, Perception and Charlex.
 
Intrabartola comes with a wealth of award-winning, senior production experience, notably animation and VFX-led spots for Blue Moon, Target, Fanta, Lay’s, Cricket Wireless, Clash Royale, British Gas and Mucinex.  He also led last year’s much-loved VR and experiential installation at JFK airport: “Mr. Mucus Talks Back” in collaboration with McCann New York.

Young & Laramore (Y&L) has hired Kyle Klinger as sr. art director, and Jane Brannen and Aiden McKiernan as writers. 

Before joining the Indianapolis-based creative agency, Klinger was at 180LA where he worked with such clients as Expedia, Pepsi, HP, and The Motion Picture Academy. Throughout his career he worked with many leading brands including Sony, Mitsubishi, Adidas, Procter & Gamble, and Match.com. At Y&L, Klinger will work with clients including KraftMaid Cabinetry.
 
Brannen will be working with clients including Brizo Faucets and KraftMaid Cabinetry at Y&L. Prior to joining the agency, she worked at Pivot Marketing with local brands including Visit Bloomington, Arts Council of Indianapolis, and the Indiana Donor Network.
 
McKiernan will be working with clients including Schlage and Farm Bureau Insurance at Y&L. Before joining the team, McKiernan worked at VSA Partners, Detroit, where he worked with brands including Harley-Davidson, Cleveland Clinic, Cache Valley Cheese and Alibaba.

Telemundo names Richard Borjas VP of production

Richard Borjas has been promoted to the newly created position of VP, production, at Telemundo where he will oversee the development and production of multiple programs for the network, including Un Nuevo Día and Suelta La Sopa. Borjas will continue to be based in Miami and report to Jesus Torres Viera, executive VP, entertainment. 

Borjas is a veteran producer and brings more than 20 years of experience to the role, five of which have been at Telemundo, where he launched and executive produced key productions including La Voz Kids and Suelta La Sopa.  He has also produced various reality formats including Yo Me Llamo and Yo Soy El Artista, and first joined the network as a producer on the weekly two-hour variety show Pa`lante con Cristina.  

Prior to his time at Telemundo, Borjas worked as a supervising producer for The Balancing Act (Lifetime), which won 11 Telly Awards during his tenure, and was also a freelance producer for Good Morning America (ABC). He also served as a producer at Univision Network for more than 11 years, where he worked on the award-winning Cristina Show, which earned him an Emmy Award nomination in 2004.

Camp+King hires editor Potu, designers Faccio and Marimon

Camp+King (C+K) has added editor Prav Potu, designer Joey Faccio and visual designer Justin Marimon to its ensemble of talent.
 
Potu has worked on everything from commercial projects to documentary films. He has had a busy freelance career for the past four years editing for AKQA, Eleven Inc., West SF and several other local agencies. From 2011 to 2013, he was editor at BBDO San Francisco, where he filmed and edited content, prepared agency content for pitches and created award case studies.
 
After graduating from Ringling College of Art and Design as its trustee scholar, Faccio moved west to pursue ad/design agency and freelance opportunities. Five years later, Faccio has a portfolio filled with designs for clients such as Toyota, Under Armour, MTV Networks, Microsoft, ABC, Bacardi, Lexus and G-Eazy.  
 
Marimon joins C+K after a recent move to the Bay Area from the Midwest. A multi-talented designer with four-plus years of experience, he has worked with industrial designers, branding studios and commercial photographers to create iconic imagery and design solutions. Marimon is passionate about exploring new mediums and hopes to expand his skills to include 3D rendering and animation.

Fitzgerald & Co adds CD/writer Dave Gordon, ACD James Beikmohamadi

Fitzgerald & Co (Fitzco) has added creative director/copywriter Dave Gordon and associate creative director James Beikmohamadi.
 
Gordon has a strong experiential and digital background and honed his creative skills at several shops over the past decade, including Razorfish in San Francisco and HUGE in Brooklyn, where he served as copywriter. Most recently, Gordon was creative director at Pereira & O’Dell in New York. Throughout his career, he’s worked on brands such as Best Buy, Intel, Microsoft, EA Games, General Mills, Procter & Gamble, Fox Sports 1, and Charter Communications.  
 
At Fitzco, Gordon creates consumer campaigns and touchpoints for Checkers & Rally’s and several Coca-Cola brands as part of Fitzco//McCann, its dedicated unit for Coca-Cola.
 
“Dave is a great crossover creative who is equally at home on the digital side of our business as he is on the traditional side—and he’s already proved a hit with clients and our agency,” said Noel Cottrell, Fitzgerald’s chief creative officer. 
 
Beikmohamadi partners with ACD Sherman Winfield. He worked at CP+B from 2010 to 2016 and split his term equally as copywriter and senior copywriter. He contributed to many of CP+B’s key accounts, including Microsoft, Best Buy, Kraft Mac & Cheese, Domino’s, Applebee’s, Velveeta Shells & Cheese, Fruit of the Loom, Infiniti and Old Navy. Prior to that, he was a copywriter at EVB in San Francisco.
 
“James’ book has a lot of my favorite Crispin Porter + Bogusky (CP+B) work in it from the six years he worked there,” added Cottrell. “It took some convincing to get him to leave the lucrative and flexible world of freelance, but I think he saw the opportunity in what we’re creating here in Atlanta.” 
 
Fitzco increased its headcount almost 25% in 2016 and recruited several senior-level executives from outside the Atlanta area. The agency’s growth is the result of new business from brands such as Checkers & Rally’s, Coca-Cola’s Odwalla, and national energy company Southern Company. Creative directors Bowen Mendelson (Ogilvy & Mather, mcgarrybowen, Energy BBDO, Deutsch) and Mike Groenewald, who hails from Johannesburg, South Africa (TBWA and Ogilvy), were recently hired to work exclusively on Fitzco//McCann’s growing Coca-Cola business.

FCB Canada hires Fenn, Antonello as group creative directors

TORONTO -- 

Matt Antonello and Noel Fenn have joined the Toronto office of FCB Canada as group creative directors. The moves reflect a growth spurt at FCB that included a number of client wins (most recently Ontario Tourism), the expansion of the creative department and the promotion of Nancy Crimi-Lamanna and Jeff Hilts to chief creative officers late last summer. 

“With our move into the CCO role, we wanted to put into place a creative structure that keeps us focused on elevating our creative product on a day-to-day basis,” said Crimi-Lamanna. “In January, we promoted Jeremiah McNama and Andrew MacPhee to group creative directors and with the addition of Matt and Noel, we’ve rounded out a senior creative leadership team that will help us continue to build on our momentum.” 

Antonello got his start as a writer and was most recently creative director with Saatchi & Saatchi. During his time there, The Gay Sweater Project earned a shelf-full of creative hardware including The Impact Award at the D&AD awards. Earlier in his career at DDB, he won two Cannes Lions for Cialis “Mustang” and Best of the Best at the CMAs for Subaru “Carwash.”

Fenn got his start as a designer and art director and was most recently at Zulu Alpha Kilo as associate creative director. Like Antonello, Fenn has a long list of international and domestic awards on his resume. At Zulu Alpha Kilo he worked on Cineplex’s much loved “Lily and the Snowman” and 1903 | A Harley-Davidson Café. Earlier in his career he earned One Show, Effie and Clio acclaim for his work on IKEA’s Human Coupons.
