Rick Lawley joins Union Editorial

Bicoastal Union Editorial has made a high-profile addition to its roster with the arrival of editor Rick Lawley. Best known as the co-founder of Whitehouse Post, which opened in London in 1990, Lawley moved to the West Coast in 2001 to open the Los Angeles office. Additionally, he was involved in the development of three other companies: Scholar, Carbon, and Cap Gun. His deep credit list as an editor spans celebrated work for Apple, GE, and Toyota, among others.

“I have known Rick for a decade, ridden with him, broken bread with him, laughed and cried with him,” said Union partner/managing director Michael Raimondi, who presides over the company with partner/managing director Caryn Maclean, alongside executive producers Melissa Lubin in NY and Vicki Russell in Austin. “Mostly, I’ve admired him as an editor and as a human, and I finally get to work with him.”

“I was not looking for a new home after Whitehouse Post, but I admire Union Editorial for their commitment to doing great work and being good people,” Lawley said.

During his decades-long career, Lawley has earned a reputation as an exceptional storyteller, collaborating on commercial projects with directors Jim Jarmusch, Wim Wenders, and Ridley Scott, as well as commercial and music video projects with Jonathan Glazer, Jake Scott, Tarsem, Frank Budgen, Traktor, and many more. Lawley’s work has been honored with Cannes Lions, British Television Awards, D&AD Awards, Clios, and by the AICP Show.

Conor O'Neill joins Nomad Editing Company as partner

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- 

Nomad Editing Company has brought editor Conor O’Neill aboard as its newest partner. O’Neill will join fellow U.S.-based partners Jennifer Lederman, Glenn Martin, Jai Shukla, Jim Ulbrich, Amanda Moreau, Jared Coller, Adam Schwartz, and recent addition Brandon Porter as they pave the way for the future of the company. Prior to joining Nomad, O’Neill had most recently been at EXILE.

O’Neill’s work encompasses a wide array of projects ranging from commercials to feature and documentary films and beyond. Following a degree from Vassar College, he spent time in the art departments of various commercial and music video production companies until editing his first documentary feature, Word Wars, which premiered at Sundance, got a theatrical release, and eventually received a News & Documentary Emmy nomination.

Since then, O’Neill has cut several Academy Award-nominated films including Foxcatcher (along with editors Jay Cassidy and Stuart Levy) and Moneyball (with editor Christopher Tellefsen). O’Neill is also no stranger to the documentary game, editing Air Guitar Nation (with editor Clark Andrew Vogeler), a documentary detailing the world championships of air guitar, the HBO Rolling Stones documentary Crossfire Hurricane, which was nominated for four primetime Emmys including Best Documentary and Best Picture Editing (for editors O’Neill and Levy), and Eric Bana’s directorial debut Love the Beast. Other notable projects include Henry-Alex Rubin’s Murderball (with editor Geoffrey Richman), also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary.

As a partner, O’Neill is most looking forward to expanding Nomad’s commercial editing footprint in Los Angeles, as well as helping to develop new creative avenues for Nomad’s production and post offerings. “The world of content creation is a rapidly changing one,” he continued, “and along with my fellow partners, I hope to help guide Nomad in a direction that sets the company up for further success in this changing landscape and allows us to continue to thrive for years to come.”

Sid Lee expands in U.S. with 8 hires, including 4 creative directors

Global creative company Sid Lee has added Christina de la Cruz, Eric Molina, Juan Davila Morris, and Francisco Rojas as creative directors in its L.A. office. As Sid Lee shapes itself for the future and adds broader perspectives to its roster, a total of eight new creative hires come aboard the Southern California operation and serve clients in the U.S. at a time of growth with the recent wins of Dos Equis, Sanofi Consumer Healthcare and Schwan’s, to name a few.

From its inception, Sid Lee has built a reputation around bold work that switches up the status quo by breaking a rule or two. With eight new appointments, the end-to-end customer experience company positions itself to extend its capabilities to shape culture with breakthrough creative solutions. 

Molina and de la Cruz join Sid Lee as a dynamic creative director team. The two have successfully worked together in several different agencies, companies, and even across multiple time zones. They share a creative vision inspired by lived experiences, travel, diversity in thought and cultures, and dedication to craft. Their previous clients include Apple, Nike, IMAX, D’Addario, Volvo, Airbnb, Facebook and TikTok, with recognition and awards from Cannes, The One Show and Clio Awards, among others. Previous roosts for de la Cruz were Leo Burnett and BBH LA.  Prior to joining Sid Lee, Molina was freelancing at Yahoo.

Morris and Rojas join Sid Lee from David&Goliath. Their work spans markets and countries and includes campaigns for Miller Lite’s “Cantroller™,” “Second Chances” for Donate Life, “Yours for the Making” for KitchenAid, and Coca-Cola’s “Taxi of Movement.” The duo has received recognition from Cannes Lions, D&AD Awards, The One Show, New York Festivals, and Clio Awards for their acclaimed work.  

Greg Plater, art director, and Victoria Bonhomme, copywriter, share the values of creating impactful work that pushes how storytelling and culture interact. As a Black creative Team, they understand the significance of their perspective and how important it is to inspire the next generation of marginalized creatives, and how they can help Sid Lee shape the future. Although Plater and Bonhomme are new to the industry, their unique backgrounds greatly influence their creative style. Plater played professional basketball overseas, traveled to over 20 countries, and lived on several continents. Before joining the Sid Lee team, he worked for several award-winning tech startups, including Omada Health, KeepTruckin, and Palm. Bonhomme graduated pre-med and then decided to pursue photography. She attended advertising school and worked for brands including Popeye’s, Tim Hortons, and Coca-Cola. Plater and Bonhomme are committed to creating globally informed work soaked in culture that drives change. 

Gaeun Oh, art director, and Christian Ianniello, copywriter, merge their unique and wildly different perspectives as one energetic and culturally curious creative team. Oh is an artist at heart with an eye for making things come to life. She uses her fine art background from the School of Visual Arts and her passion as a creative director in the fashion space with her strategic and conceptual art direction. Ianniello comes from a journalism and poetry background, writing for publications such as SoapBox Editorial. She combines her appreciation for words, poetry, and storytelling to craft compelling copy. They come from Havas, New York, where they worked across various disciplines--from TV to out-of-home--for clients such as Keurig, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, and Rite Aid. They most recently completed a campaign featuring the musically talented comedians James Corden and Reggie Watts. Together, they hope to cut through the clutter with ideas that bring out the weird, honest, and humanness in everyone and everything.

Consulate to rep Trevor Undi as an editor

Integrated creative studio Consulate has brought Trevor Undi on board as an editor in its New York office. This marks the first time that the filmmaker has been repped editorially. 

Undi is a British/Canadian/Zambian director and editor. His experience on television series and features inform his approach to the edit suite. Years spent in the cutting rooms of large-scale studio features enabled him to absorb every aspect of postproduction, including visual effects. He now brings this depth of understanding of the process and his comprehensive knowledge of narrative filmmaking to Consulate. 

Over the course of his career, Undi has collaborated on projects alongside a variety of celebrated producers, directors, and actors, including Keanu Reeves, Will Smith, Jennifer Connelly, John Cleese, and Wesley Snipes (in the production of the Blade series). Undi worked under the leadership of Wayne Wahrman, editor of I am Legend and Constantine, and apprenticed with director Scott Derrickson, of Dr. Strange and Sinister fame. Undi has worked on projects at numerous studios and networks including Warner Bros., Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Paramount, Disney, DreamWorks, and NBC/Universal. 

In advertising, Undi has partnered with a variety of international brands on broadcast and digital campaigns, such as Estée Lauder, Tiffany & Co., NARS Cosmetics, Shiseido, Disney, Coach, Balenciaga, and The New York City Ballet, among many others. 

Undi said of his new colleagues at Consulate, “It’s great to be a part of such a progressive and diverse group of creatives. Postproduction is at the heart of my background as a filmmaker and one that I am very passionate about.”

Tracey Khan named managing director of The Mill Chicago
Tracey Khan

Tracey Khan has been elevated to managing director of The Mill Chicago.

Khan steps into the role with over a decade of experience at The Mill, having originally started in London before being one of the pioneering producers who established the Chicago studio. Previously head of production, Khan is credited with the growth of The Mill’s Chicago studio, particularly the recently expanded direct-to-brand, strategic production offering, Mill+. 

Prior to her role as head of production, Khan cultivated key industry relationships across the globe, as executive producer on projects in collaboration with BBH, AMV, DDB, BBDO, Leo Burnett Cramer- Krasselt, Digitas, and FCB. 

She joins a new leadership team across the global production studio consisting of managing directors Misha Standford Harris in London, Justin Stiebel in Berlin and Anastasia Von Rahl in Los Angeles. 

Khan will focus on the Chicago studio’s continued growth, from continued award-winning VFX and design work with the region’s top agencies, to offering strategic insight and end-to-end production for brand partners. 

Khan commented, “Creativity and diverse perspectives are the driving force behind everything we do here in Chicago. I’d like to continue our drive with both diversifying our portfolio of work and rostered talent to offer up the best creative solutions for our clients across visual effects, design, direction and experiential projects.”

HUSH promotes EP Kristen DiCamillo to partner

Experience design firm HUSH has promoted executive producer Kristen DiCamillo to partner--joining founding partners David Schwarz and Erik Karasyk. As the first new partner since the launch of the company nearly 15 years ago, DiCamillo will serve as the managing partner, overseeing and optimizing the company’s success through its processes, operations, and finances. 

Formerly an EP at digital agency B-Reel, DiCamillo led the shop’s production teams to create the globe-spanning, UGC-focused MTV Bump platform. Prior to that, she served as a sr. digital producer at Tool, where she produced the multi-award-winning “Clouds Over Cuba” campaign, and at other agencies including BBH, Sid Lee, Saatchi & Saatchi, and Ogilvy Paris.

DiCamillo joined HUSH in 2017 as EP. During her tenure, she has engaged with virtually every project and client at the firm. Of particular note, she spearheaded the development and deployment of multiple, global Partner Center experiences for Facebook. This work involved multi-product strategic storytelling, physical design and technology integration, global scale rollouts, and support approaches that helped to refine HUSH’s approach and processes. She also played critical roles in delivering the sustainability-focused experience design concept for United Therapeutics’ headquarters, and was essential to the success of the experience design and digital storytelling for Uber’s soon-to-be unveiled Mission Bay global headquarters in San Francisco.

“Over the years, I have been focused on project roadmapping, team building, strategic partner collaboration, delivery, and maintenance practices that ultimately make our projects more successful, profitable, and lead to continued client trust and engagement,” DiCamillo stated. “Now, as managing partner, I’m looking forward to finding the balance between running a healthy business and giving the team runway to find new ways of approaching project programs. DiCamillo will continue to play a role in guiding production, leading projects anchored by the vision and goals of the studio, working closely with Tonian Irving who is being promoted from sr. producer to EP.

The Ad Council names Elise James-DeCruise as its first chief equity officer

Elise James-DeCruise has been named the Ad Council’s chief equity officer, a new role at the organization. James-DeCruise will oversee the Ad Council’s ongoing commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion.

James-DeCruise brings more than 20 years of experience in leading strategies and solutions to promote diversity, equity and inclusion and professional development within the world of marketing and communications. Previously, James-DeCruise held the positions of chief diversity and inclusion officer at Marcus Thomas, a Cleveland-based independent marketing communications agency, and VP, global head of multicultural marketing and inclusion at MediaMath in New York. 

As chief equity officer of the Ad Council, the nation’s leading producer of social good communications, James-DeCruise will report to president and CEO Lisa Sherman. Working closely with senior leadership, James-DeCruise will initiate, advocate for and evaluate the programs and practices that foster a more diverse and inclusive environment, including overseeing and evolving the organization’s existing commitments to racial justice. 

“The Ad Council is unequivocally committed to fighting systemic racism and injustice, both within our organization and in the work we do to reach and motivate the American public,” said Sherman. “I am thrilled to have Elise join our team and welcome her leadership as we accelerate our efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable workplace and society.”

EP Kate Hitchings joins 1stAveMachine

1stAveMachine has added Kate Hitchings as executive producer. She formerly served as EP for Electric Theatre Collective and, later its sister company, Friends Electric.

Versatile across all aspects of commercial live-action, VFX, and animation content, Hitchings has helped bring to life narratives for top-tier brands. She was an integral part to the success of Chromebook’s six-part animated series, The Adulthood, and campaigns such as “Swarm” for Lexus and “Mountain” for PlayStation. The latter--which garnered over 40 awards and nominations, including the coveted Cannes Lion Grand Prix--marked the very first time that any production outside of Weta Digital had tapped into crowd simulation software MASSIVE.

DNEG appoints Roy C. Anthony as global head of research

Visual effects and animation company DNEG has appointed digital technology innovator and real-time workflow expert Roy C. Anthony as global head of research.

Anthony’s primary focus will be on emerging technologies, driving innovation within the domains of real-time technology and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance the artist experience across visual effects and animation. As a former Conference chair of SIGGRAPH (2018), Anthony will also continue to develop and nurture close relationships with the communities of SIGGRAPH, the Visual Effects Society, and other industry organizations and third-party companies focusing on real-time technology and AI. 

DNEG Global CTO Paul Salvini said of Anthony, “His expertise in real-time technology and his passion for the art and science of filmmaking will help us to design and develop new tools and workflows that will fundamentally shape our industry.”

For over 20 years Anthony has been driving innovation across a range of related fields, including real-time, AI, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), projection mapping, film, interactive immersive displays, and future technologies for both film and live event/staging environments. He spent 13 years as a sr. solutions architect in the research & innovation division at Christie Digital Systems and was most recently VP of creative development and operations at Ventuz Technology. Anthony holds patents in Stereoscopy, VR/AR display systems and calibration, and is a co-author of three academic publications on high frame-rate film.

Daniel DelPurgatorio joins ATKPLN as exec creative director

Design-first creative studio ATKPLN has hired Daniel DelPurgatorio as its executive creative director. He previously spearheaded the efforts of the U.S. design division of Framestore Chicago. DelPurgatorio earlier was at design house Vitamin and prior to that served as creative director at Reel FX Creative Studios.

DelPurgatorio also has directorial chops as reflected in such credits as the short films Third Wheel, Body(s), and OTHER, along with Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter for Warner Bros. He’s a Project Greenlight winner and has had his films screened at such festivals as SXSW, Telluride, Fantasia and Screamfest.

DelPurgatorio is a graduate from Ringling College of Art and Design.
