Shawn Shahani named director of strategy at 3AM
Shawn Shahani
LOS ANGELES --

3AM, the award-winning entertainment marketing agency founded in 2014 as a joint venture between Ridley Scott’s RSA Films and Wild Card, has brought Shawn Shahani on board as director of strategy. Shahani will work closely with 3AM’s leadership to evolve the strategy practice, strengthening the company’s approach to translating audience research and data into outstanding creative opportunities for filmmakers, studios and brands — and contributing to all phases of the 3AM process. Prior to joining 3AM, Shahani was strategy director at R/GA’s Hustle, leading the agency’s strategy team and servicing culture-first clients such as Beats by Dre and Twentieth Century Fox.

Shahani brings a deep expertise in brand and digital strategy and a proven ability to think strategically and act creatively. His additional experience includes working as co-head of social strategy for Havas New York, servicing brands such as Dos Equis, Hersheys, Liberty Mutual and Diageo, and social strategist at Momentum Worldwide, where he led his team in digital strategy for client Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. He was the first hire of Hearst-owned digital agency iCrossing’s Live Media Studio content practice and began his career at American Apparel where he helped launch its marketing and digital practice while developing online influencer outreach at the height of the company’s popularity.

“Shawn is a great fit for our team,” said Chris Eyerman, executive creative director, 3AM. “More than ever, the entertainment industry needs to get smarter, bolder and stronger. Nearly every second of the week is contested by quality content across every medium and a great idea no longer has a fighting chance without a brilliant core strategy, a truly distinctive hook and a killer distribution plan embedded at its core. Shawn has a proven track record of building attention-earning projects and communications that address these challenges.”

Alison Temple, managing partner, 3AM, added, “We’re always looking for creative disruptors at 3AM — people who understand how to tap into the entire continuum of modern storytelling and platform opportunities, and define the next generation of entertainment. Shawn’s unique ability to create elegant strategic solutions across the worlds of brand and entertainment will help us offer even more impactful work in the coming year. We’re excited to have him on the team.”

“The opportunity to join 3AM was an exciting one across the board,” Shahani commented. “The talent and work is already best-in-class and the leadership is inspiring and ambitious. Continuing to evolve our reputation that we think differently, understand people better than anyone else and know how to strategically find the right moments to grab the world’s attention is an exciting challenge.”

Among 3AM’s acclaimed work is a holistic prologue narrative concepted in partnership with Ridley Scott for Alcon Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ critically acclaimed Blade Runner 2049. The prologue shorts include “2036: Nexus Dawn” with Jared Leto, and “2048: Nowhere to Run” with Dave Battista. 3AM also created the award-winning “Meet Walter” ft. Michael Fassbender, the branded entertainment partnership for Twentieth Century Fox’s Alien: Covenant and AMD, and Fox’s “The Martian Prologue” campaign.

Robert Checchi joins yU+co as director of museum & special projects
Robert Checchi
HOLLYWOOD, Calif. --

Digital content creation studio yU+co has added Robert Checchi, the award-winning former sr. exhibition designer for the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, as its new director of museum and special projects.

Checchi joins yU+co following 12 years at The Getty where he oversaw both temporary and permanent collection exhibition development, design, fabrication and installation at one of the world’s most acclaimed cultural institutions.

“This year marks yU+co’s 20th year in business, and one of the reasons I think we’ve had such a long run of success has been our ability to diversify and experiment,” company founder and creative director Garson Yu said. “Whether it’s in our strategic thinking and story-telling, the technology we use or seeking out opportunities beyond film and television, we’ve always been willing to try new things.”

For Checchi, the move to join yU+co comes on the heels on the successful collaboration between the two on the “Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China’s Silk Road” exhibit, which featured a 3D immersive experience of the interior of one of the caves. The exhibit received several prestigious awards including a 2017 AAM Excellence in Exhibitions/Special Achievement Award, and a 2107 Gold Muse Award in the Multimedia Installations Competition.

“yU+co created the 3D immersive experience and produced the videos that accompanied the exhibit, and I got to see up close just how talented they were and the attention to detail they bring to their work,” Checchi says. “I was impressed. I had been looking to get more involved in the digital side of museum/exhibition design, and thought with my understanding of exhibit design and how major cultural institutions operate overall, coupled with yU+co’s creative design brilliance, we offered a potent combination of skills for today’s museums, cultural and educational institutions, and beyond.”

Checchi notes that as the technology has advanced, so has audiences’ demand for more immersive types of learning experiences that enhance the understanding of today’s exhibits.

“For a long time museums were resistant to putting anything digital next to their art,” Checchi said, “but that mindset is changing as more and more major museums are looking to enhance exhibits with interactive, immersive experiences that engage audiences and offer a deeper understanding of the subject.”

Decades Of Experience:
In the case of The Getty’s “Cave Temples of Dunhuang: Buddhist Art on China’s Silk Road,” yU+co created a 3D experience in which viewers entered a digital replica of one of the cave temples resplendent in art and sculpture that seemed to hang right in front of them. In addition, yU+co’s original video content offered further details about the art.

Checchi brings over two decades of experience working in the art world. He began his career in 1993 as a designer at Statue of Liberty Monument/Ellis Island in New York. From there he embarked on a successful freelance career where he worked with such Los Angeles-based institutions as the Italian American Museum, Norton Simon Museum and the Skirball Center before joining The Getty in 2006.

At the Getty he was lead designer for such landmark exhibitions as “Drawings by Rembrandt and His Pupils: Telling the Difference”; “Leonardo da Vinci and the Art of Sculpture: Inspiration and Invention”; “Josef Koudelka: Nationality Doubtful” (winner of the 2015 Lucie Award for Exhibition of the Year); and the recent “Golden Kingdoms: Luxury and Legacy in the Ancient Americas,” the flagship exhibition for the Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA citywide initiative.

Carol Wong, yU+co VP/executive producer, added that many museums, exhibitions, educational institutions, live events, brands and retail spaces are looking to partner with smart, conceptual studios like yU+co that can use not only their design and CG skills, but also their visual storytelling talents to create something truly memorable for viewers.

“With our design skills and creative use of technology, coupled with Robert’s deep understanding of the museum world, yU+co is well positioned to help today’s cultural institutions find innovative ways to educate and engage audiences,”  said Wong.

Vicki Russell joins Union Editorial Austin as executive producer
Vicki Russell
AUSTIN, Texas --

Vicki Russell has joined Union Editorial Austin as executive producer. Union, which also has offices in New York and Los Angeles, has been active in the Austin market since 2011, opening a brick and mortar shop in December 2013 and inhabiting its current location since the summer of 2014. Prior to joining Union, Russell spent six years as executive producer at Austin’s Proof Advertising, where standout work included a project for Mouser Innovation Lab, in partnership with Marvel (directed by Dan Brown of Curiosity Shoppe, featuring Grant Imahara), that enjoyed viral success.

In her new role, Russell strives to support and nurture personal and professional growth. “Austin in general is a very supportive and tight-knit community,” she said. “There’s a lot of mutual respect among colleagues and competitors. (Editors) Kevin Ray and Rachael Waxler have been doing so well over the past few years, and I hope to grow their fan bases even more.”

Among Ray’s recent work out of Austin are projects for Bonefish Grill via Vitro, ACLU of Texas (Richard Linklater, director), Dodge (Spiro Razatos, director) and Walgreens (Dave Meyers, director), all via GSD&M in Austin. Via that agency, Waxler recently edited Hilton Garden Inn (Clay Weiner, director), Walgreens Beauty (Joel Kefali, director), Southwest Airlines (Rachel Goldenberg, director), and Popeyes (Rocky Powell, director). Since its inception, Union Editorial Austin has worked on Lowe’s, Anheuser Busch, Target, Domino’s, Red Bull, Starbucks, Pepsi, and MLB, all via LatinWorks.

Russell graduated from University of North Texas in 1995, earning a Bachelor Degree in Journalism with emphasis in Advertising. She began her career as an assistant account executive at DDB Needham in Dallas, before moving into postproduction. Russell worked her way up from client service/assistant producer to producer, then sr. producer, dividing time between Post Op and N2O (both in Dallas). She segued into agency producing at The Richards Group, Dallas. In 2006, Russell moved to Austin as a freelancer, producing projects via GSD&M for Wal-Mart and AT&T. She next joined Beast Austin as executive producer, overseeing editorial on work for Southwest Airlines, BMW, Kohler, AT&T and Whataburger, to name a few. After the birth of her daughter and a brief move to Boulder, Colo., Russell returned to Austin and joined Proof as EP. In addition to Mouser Innovation Lab, some of Russell’s clients at Proof included American Heart Association, Stubbs BBQ, Subway and Apothic Wines. In 2017 alone, Russell worked with directors Plummer/Strauss, Eli Green with A Common Thread, Berndt Mader with The Bear, Mike Woolf with Beef and Pie, Michael O of Noonday Pictures, and Gina Grande. Russell’s awards and honors include an Austin ADDY for Mouser Innovation Labs; a Silver Telly Award for Baylor University, and consecutive Big Wig Awards from the Austin Ad Fed for Best Commercial Producer.

Russell’s favorite projects include an early campaign she produced for MD Anderson cancer centers (via Richards Group, directed by Iain MacKenzie), focusing on three cancer survivors (“It was a very personal and touching project, and I was very proud to be a part of that, especially as a new agency producer,” she said). Another favorite is a project for the Midwest hot dog brand Schweigert via Proof, notable because “it was shot in my backyard on a hot-as-hell Texas day, for next to nothing. It was directed by Jason Marlow, with DP Tod Campbell, and is still one of the most fun projects I’ve done.”

All of those experiences have served Russell well and prepared her for this new chapter. “I’ve always loved the creative process and watching the magic that can happen in an edit bay. The team at Union Austin, along with the ad community in this town, is incredible. I look forward continuing to connect great creative with the great talent assembled here.”
