Method Studios brings Hans ten Cate aboard to drive games biz

SAN FRANCISCO -- 

Hans ten Cate has joined Method Studios as VP, sr. business development, games. The former Sony PlayStation manager and Electronic Arts studio executive and producer will focus on bringing Method Studios’ award-winning creative talent and deep technology resources to game developers and publishers to produce cinematics, trailers and teasers, marketing and social content.

“Video games have become more film-like in recent years,” ten Cate said, “with tremendous attention paid to realism and details in character models, animations, cinematics, and effects. Concurrently, the film industry has started using game engines as essential tools in the production process. Method is right at the crux of both of these worlds, with expertise and technology in both, and creative work that has earned Oscar and Emmy recognition. They can also create, direct, produce and deliver every aspect of a project. I’m incredibly excited to bring this very special combination of capabilities to partners in the games industry.”

A long-time game industry executive, ten Cate has produced and designed AAA games for PC, console and mobile and negotiated business and technology partnerships for the industry’s largest publishers as well as startups. He spent a decade at EA, as an executive producer creating award-winning games and later as sr. director of business development for EA Partners. Ten Cate contributed to such game franchises as The Sims, The Simpsons, and Dante’s Inferno.  At EA Partners, he built relationships with hundreds of game development studios and partners. Ten Cate later co-founded MaxPlay, a games technology company, where he was VP of business development and was instrumental in building and growing the company’s partnerships and developer relations organization. He is an executive board member of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) and is based in San Francisco.

Method Studios’ games trailer work includes standout pieces for Fallout 76, Evony, Game of War and other top titles. The company completed visual effects work on recent features including Aquaman, Fantastic Beasts: the Crimes of Grindelwald, Christmas Chronicles and Welcome to Marwen

Method Studios, a Deluxe company, maintains a network of facilities in Los Angeles, Vancouver, New York, Montreal, San Francisco, Atlanta, and Pune, India.

Deluxe promotes Holt to EVP of global operations, hires Smirnoff as EVP, sales

LOS ANGELES -- 

Deluxe Entertainment Services Group (Deluxe) has announced that Chris Holt has been appointed to the new role of EVP, global operations, and Mark Smirnoff has been hired as EVP, sales for the Post-Production unit led by president William Sherak and chief operating officer Mike Gunter.

In making the announcement, Gunter said, “With Chris and Mark we have added two incredible talents to lead Deluxe Post-Production. William and I are thrilled that they are on the team that will lead us in the successes we see ahead.”

Holt most recently served as SVP and general manager for the division and previously held that position at Company 3 in Los Angeles. He has held executive positions at Sony Colorworks and Technicolor, and served as digital intermediate producer on feature films for Disney, Fox, and Universal. He will be responsible for the overall management and strategy for the global EFILM and Encore studios, as well as for the Deluxe Post-Production businesses in New York, London, and Toronto.

Smirnoff meanwhile reports to Holt and will lead the global sales teams at EFILM, Encore, Editpool, Level 3, EC3, Mobilabs, as well as the sales teams at Deluxe’s London, Toronto, and New York offices.

Smirnoff comes to Deluxe from Technicolor where he was VP of episodic services. He previously was president of creative services for Modern VideoFilm, and has served as the post executive in charge of many critically acclaimed feature and television projects.

Both Holt and Smirnoff will be based in Los Angeles.

Yuki Kani joins BETC Etoile Rouge as creative director

Yuki Kani has joined BETC Etoile Rouge in the role of creative director and as part of the creative teams helmed by ECD Jasmine Loignon. BETC Etoile Rouge is an agency within the BETC group, dedicated to luxury, fashion, and beauty brands. 
 
After graduating from the Tama Art University in Tokyo, Kani began his career at Carré Noir, before joining BETC and later BETC Luxe as art director. During his 12 years at BETC he worked for brands like Air France, Evian, Lacoste, Giorgio Armani fragrances and Van Cleef & Arpels.

In 2013 he joined Mazarine as sr. art director and worked exclusively on luxury, fashion and beauty brands such as Carolina Herrera, Baume&Mercier and Issey Miyake. 

After a stint with the McCann Beauty Team for l’Oréal Paris, he returned to Mazarine as sr. art director and art supervisor for Diesel fragrances, Cacharel, DKNY and Chopard.

At BETC Etoile Rouge, he will be in charge of creative for Le Bon Marché, on both advertising and publishing, as well as luxury brands from AccorHotels group and the Coty group. He will also be working alongside Delphine de Canecaude with former Etoile Rouge brands like Ofée, Dior Fragrances and Louis Vuitton.

Editor Aika Miyake joins Cut+Run

Editor Aika Miyake has joined the roster of Cut+Run for representation in the U.S. She is based in the company’s L.A. office.

Miyake, a member of Free The Bid, has collaborated with the likes of Wieden + Kennedy, Nike, Dentsu, TBWA, Mercedes Benz, and BMW. Her Nike Air Force 1 “Force” was shortlisted at Cannes for editing and her “Mom’s first birthday” for Pampers was honored at numerous award shows including Spike, New York Festivals, ACC and Ad Stars. Prior to coming aboard Cut+Run, Miyake was with Cutters.

The Tokyo-raised, California-educated Miyake is a former drummer who professes to see edits like rhythms. “I am in love with the craft of film editing. Weaving all the beats, movements and feelings together to create a bigger wave is what I live for. The more you edit, the more you learn. Editing has taught me nothing in life is ever completely black or white, and with every project I discover another dimension of this world.”

Cut+Run operates under a borderless philosophy making its editors available worldwide on location and via its shops in London, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin.

Sr. colorist Walter Volpatto joins EFILM

EFILM has added sr. colorist Walter Volpatto, a 15-year industry veteran whose credits include “Dunkirk,” directed by Christopher Nolan; “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” directed by Rian Johnson; and, most recently, Amazon Studios’ critically acclaimed series “Homecoming.” As a colorist, Volpatto’s style gravitates toward an aesthetic of realism, though his projects span genres from drama and action to comedy and documentary, such as the just-released “Green Book,” directed by Peter Farrelly; and earlier exploits including Quentin Tarantino’s “The Hateful Eight; “Independence Day: Resurgence,” directed by Roland Emmerich; and “Bad Moms,” directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore. Volpatto joins EFILM from Fotokem, where he started in digital intermediate before progressively shifting toward fully digital workflows while navigating emerging technologies such as HDR. 

“Walter’s talent transcends formats and his work on some of the most visually stunning films in recent years speaks for itself,” commented William Sherak, president of Deluxe Post Production. “He understands color on a fundamental level and we’re fortunate to have him on board.”  

Volpatto said, “The global reach and talent pool of EFILM is impressive; it’s been on my very short list of places I want to work.” 

Volpatto found his way into color finishing by way of visual effects, a career he initially pursued as an outlet for his passion for photography. He began working as a digital intermediate artist at Cinecitta in Rome in 2002, before relocating to Los Angeles the following year. Since then, he’s continued honing his skillset for both the film and digital worlds while also expanding his knowledge of color science. Though known for his feature film work, Volpatto periodically works in episodic television and is drawn to quality cinematography, regardless of the intended medium. Based at EFILM’s Hollywood facility, he can accommodate clients at many of Deluxe’s color grading suites, including the newly opened, state-of-the-art Stage One.

Garth Bender named director of customer experience at Marcus Thomas

Independent creative agency Marcus Thomas LLC has named Garth Bender as its director of customer experience, a new role at the shop.  He will ensure that customer experience remains at the forefront of all marketing and brand strategies.

Bender is a 21+ year veteran of the ad industry and has led digital transformations for a variety of brands including Kimberly-Clark, Bayer, SC Johnson, and Altria. He now returns to the Cleveland area from Chicago where he was most recently the relationship lead on Digitas’ Altria business. Earlier in his career, he held roles at Havas Helia, Energy BBDO and Cramer-Krasselt.

Publicis Groupe's Nigel Vaz named next president of IPA

Nigel Vaz, business transformation lead and executive committee member at Publicis Groupe, and CEO of Publicis.Sapient across EMEA and APAC, has been named president-elect of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), the trade body and professional organization for agencies in the U.K.’s advertising, media and marketing communications industry. He becomes IPA president in March 2019.

He will serve a two-year term during which he will work closely with the director general Paul Bainsfair to evolve and shape the future direction of the IPA and the agency industry more generally. Vaz will be the IPA’s chief spokesman for its membership, and will also chair the meetings of the IPA Council, its governing body. The IPA exists to advance and promote the theory, practice and value of marketing communications, we well as standards of best practice.
 
Bainsfair commented: “I am very much looking forward to working with Nigel to ensure the IPA remains the power behind the practitioners. He is a man who encompasses all the skills we need as an industry and who is already a well-known champion for technology and transformation. Young & Laramore promotes Williams, Judkins to group creative directors

Creative agency Young & Laramore has promoted creative directors, principals Trevor Williams and Bryan Judkins to group creative directors. As co-GCDs Williams and Judkins will help foster and develop the next generation of creative leadership at the agency and help propel current and future clients to the next level. They will report to Carolyn Hadlock, ECD, principal.

Williams has helped grow brands like Farm Bureau Insurance and Brizo as well as create High & Mighty, a new hanging hardware brand for the Hillman Group. He helps set the standard for craft of the work at the agency and his attention to detail has led Y&L’s clients and the agency to garner national recognition for its work. 

Judkins helped add national brands to Y&L’s roster like Trane, American Standard, and Louisville Slugger. He also stewarded brands such as Trane and Upland Brewing.

Creatives Schreurs, Cocchiara join BSUR

Boris Schreurs and Davide Cocchiara have joined indie ad agency BSUR as an art director/illustrator and copywriter, respectively. Both will work on a variety of the shop’s accounts.

Prior to joining BSUR, both Schreurs and Cocchiara spent time in the creative department of LOLA MullenLowe in Madrid, Uncle Grey, Copenhagen, and McCann London. Schreurs also worked as an illustrator for game company Jogo Jogo.

Toth+Co appoints Kimberlee Eten as creative director

Independent, full-service branding and advertising agency Toth+Co has hired Kimberlee Eten as creative director. The move comes as the agency looks to expand its presence beyond fashion and retail, targeting a wider range of clients and brands.

Eten will be based in New York and lead creative teams in both New York and Boston.

Eten is no stranger to Toth+Co, having spent the earlier part of her career at the agency as design director from 2001-2011. During this time, Eten co-authored a book on design titled, “Fashion Icon: The Power and Influence of Graphic Design” with Toth+Co founder Mike Toth.

For the past seven years, Eten has been a creative director and brand consultant, specializing in the creation of entire brand experiences through her unique fluency and application of technology, design and creative. Throughout her career, she has worked with brands such as Coach, Michele Watch, Façonnable, Chris-Craft, Ghurka, Fisher-Price, Harvard University, Sperry and Swarovski.
