Digital Domain promotes Matt McClurg to head its visualization department

Digital Domain has promoted visualization expert and studio veteran Matt McClurg to serve as its new head of visualization. McClurg will oversee the VFX studio’s full range of visualization efforts, including comprehensive previs and post viz work and its virtual production department.
 
For 30 years, Digital Domain has turned out visual effects for award-winning features, episodics and more while earning a reputation as a technological innovator due to its pioneering research into digital and autonomous humans and countless advancements in virtual production and visualization. McClurg will leverage Digital Domain’s advanced tools to offer clients a visual representation of what their final product will look like, giving them a clear path forward.

“Matt has played a pivotal role in propelling Digital Domain’s visualization efforts to unprecedented heights in recent years,” remarked Lala Gavgavian, COO and global president of Digital Domain. 
 
Along with overseeing Digital Domain’s current and upcoming visualization projects, McClurg will help streamline and incorporate new pipelines that take full advantage of the VFX studio’s bespoke toolsets. That includes its proprietary machine learning software and AI-driven creations. McClurg will also continue to lead the development of custom systems and processes created within game engines, designed to give filmmakers new ways to watch and edit effects-heavy scenes remotely from anywhere in the world.
 
McClurg’s resume includes stops at both The Third Floor and 20th Century Fox, and in 2014 he was hired by Pixomondo to help create and run its previs department. In 2019, McClurg joined Digital Domain as previs supervisor, overseeing several major features including Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home, Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and the Oscar-nominated Free Guy. McClurg was also heavily involved in several episodic previs projects, including HBO’s The Last of Us and Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville.

Hogarth Worldwide appoints Dave Carey as president of Canada, managing director of growth for North America

Hogarth Worldwide, WPP’s specialist global creative content production company, has named Dave Carey as president of Canada, and managing director of growth, North America. 

Carey will oversee operations in Canada and Chicago and will lead the growth strategy for North America. He will report into newly appointed CEO of the Americas, Natasha Cholerton-Brown.

With over 20 years of international marketing experience, Carey joins from OLIVER Canada where he was president. While there, he led full breadth campaigns for companies such as Unilever, Molson Coors, CIBC, adidas, WestJet, 3M, and Manulife, to name a few.   

Prior to OLIVER, Carey was a founding partner of Union Creative in Canada which was part of the MDC network. He also opened the Innocean Canadian office for the Kia business.

Laundry opens NY office, hires Susie Shuttleworth as EP

Laundry Design, LLC, a production company and animation studio with bases of operation in L.A. and San Francisco, has opened offices in New York City and brought in Susie Shuttleworth as executive producer. Shuttleworth brings to Laundry NY a wealth of experience, recently leading creative shops Alkemy X, LAVA and most recently Sound Lounge.  Shuttleworth will handle all incoming business from the eastern territory in partnership with Andrew Michaeloff and Anya Zander of indie rep firm Hustle.

Born and raised in NY production, Shuttleworth has been a content-focused EP for high profile brands such as Cadillac, Puma, Apple and Disney, as well as networks and agencies.

James Sweigert, CEO/managing director of Laundry, noted that the company has been working in the NY market for many years but decided to set up a studio there to better serve its East Coast clients. He described Shuttleworth as the ideal person to head up the NY shop and “a perfect cultural fit for Laundry.

Framestore NY's new creative hires Include ECD Corey Brown

Framestore has recently fortified its New York studio with a series of senior creative hires: Corey Brown as executive creative director, Andre Vidal as VFX supervisor, and Keno Naidoo and Theuns Van Rensburg as compositing supervisors.

As ECD of the New York studio, Brown will further bolster Framestore’s advertising division. An established name in the VFX industry with over 25 years of industry experience, including the last 12 years at The Mill in New York, Brown is known as an exceptional problem-solver and highly regarded VFX supervisor and creative leader. Grown has worked alongside A-list directors including Baz Luhrmann, Darren Aronofsky, Peter Berg, Jake Scott, and Simon McQuoid.

VFX supervisor Vidal joins from The Mill. His most notable projects include Bud Light’s iconic “Bud Knight” and Pepsi’s halftime trailer, “The Call,” for the Super Bowl, and the Cannes Lions Grand Prix-winning “Leica 100.” He has also contributed to award-winning campaigns for brands like Playstation, Nissan, DirecTV, Paramount+, and a project for Google Pixelbook which was shot in a zero-gravity airplane.

Naidoo joins Framestore as compositing supervisor (Flame) with a career spanning nearly two decades in his native South Africa. He has extensive experience working in Flame, Nuke, Houdini, and Unreal, color, and on-set supervision, completing projects for Coca-Cola, Nissan, Puma, and Jameson. He has already lent his skill set while at Framestore to the McDonald’s “Knowing Their Order” Super Bowl LVII campaign.

Van Rensburg also hails from South Africa, bringing over 12 years of VFX experience on commercial projects. Most recently, he spent four years in Switzerland as a Flame artist and VFX supervisor, overseeing on-set supervision through to final mastering with brands including Audi, Coca-Cola, and Castle Lite. Prior, he spent time at Searle Street Post and Black Ginger in Cape Town. Since joining Framestore, Van Rensburg has worked on projects including Nissan’s “Town of Basic” and Booking.com’s Super Bowl LVII spot, “Somewhere, Anywhere.”

Jordan Carroll has also been promoted to head of CG at Framestore’s Los Angeles and Chicago studios. As an established member of the Chicago team, Carroll will expand his responsibilities to the West Coast, managing the CG team, and working with department heads to continue raising the team’s creative output.

BSSP taps Lauren King as director of digital media and activation

Integrated creative company Butler, Shine, Stern and Partners (BSSP) has appointed Lauren King as its new director of digital media and activation. King is tasked with managing and fostering relationships with key industry partners, developing and refining the media department’s processes to streamline efforts and better serve BSSP’s roster of clients, while also staying ahead of rising trends within the digital marketplace. King will report to Kerri Gouveia Stumpo, BSSP’s head of media and communication strategy. 

Stumpo said of King, “With her own style of strategizing and creativity, this new role presents much growth opportunity for the agency. Finding the right person that not only flourishes with leading our internal teams, but with our roster of existing and incoming clients, can be tricky. With Lauren’s background, we are fully confident that she will thrive as our new director of digital media and activation.” 

A veteran of the media industry, King previously served as the associate media director at Horizon Media where she worked for over four years on the Constellation Beer, Wine and Spirits account. With a primary focus on Modelo Especial, the fastest growing domestically imported beer in the U.S.

William Laban returns to Framestore as VFX supervisor

VFX supervisor William Laban has joined Framestore’s London advertising division.

Laban’s creative highlights include Burberry’s “Open Spaces” and “Night Creatures” directed by Megaforce, Hennessy X.O’s “The Seven Worlds” directed by Sir Ridley Scott, John Lewis’ “Buster the Boxer” directed by Dougal Wilson, and BT’s “Broadband Nightmares” directed by The Sacred Egg. 

He has won two VES Awards, two Gold British Arrows and a Cannes Gold Lion, among other honors.

With over 10 years of industry experience, Laban now returns to Framestore where he began his VFX career as a runner before working his way up to technical director, commercials. In 2016 he joined MPC where he rose to VFX supervisor, a role he later transferred over to The Mill.

Kendall Kendall named EP At Camp Lucky

Longtime producer Kendall Kendall has been upped to executive producer at Camp Lucky. Kendall has been a part of the Camp Lucky family for over a decade. She now leads the shop alongside EP Jessica Berry.

“Kendall is an integral part of the heart and soul of Camp Lucky and has been part of our team since we launched nearly 11 years ago,” noted Berry. “She is passionate about making every project a success with equal support and appreciation for clients and our artists. I couldn’t ask for a better EP partner.”

Kendall said, “Having the opportunity to lead Camp Lucky’s mission with Jessica is both an honor and a joy. I get to spend my days with a tight knit group of people that I care for and respect, and who continue to encourage and support me no matter the challenge.”

Kendall came of age in the heyday of MTV, and studied film production with the dream of becoming involved in film and music videos. Upon graduating, she moved from Dallas to Los Angeles, where she worked at 20th Century Fox and received a masterclass in postproduction budgeting. Returning to Dallas, Kendall worked at Publicis for its in-house editorial studio, which provided an important perspective on advertising from an agency standpoint--something that informs her collaborations today. At Camp Lucky, Kendall has led the post team for clients such as Frito Lay, Kia, Ram, Carl’s Jr., TAZO, McDonald’s, Miller Lite, TGI Friday’s and Western Union, among others.

Stefanie Kubanka named EVP, managing director at Performance Art NY

Performance Art, Interpublic Group’s (IPG) data-driven creative agency, has appointed Stefanie Kubanka as EVP, managing director for its New York office. Kubanka will oversee the agency’s operations, talent and culture, growth strategy, and its U.S.-based client roster including BMW North America, Lyft, Veterans United, and ScottsMiracle-Gro.

Grey London hires Tarek Sioufi as chief strategy officer

Tarek Sioufi is set to become chief strategy officer at Grey London, joining from Media.Monks. He will take on his new role as part of the agency’s core executive team in June, reporting to president and chief creative officer Laura Jordan Bambach and global chief strategy and data officer Jonathan Lee. 

At Media.Monks, Sioufi spent two years working as global executive strategy director. During his time there, he was instrumental in building out the company’s global creative offering, working for clients including Toblerone (Mondelez), Adez (Coca-Cola), BrewDog, Netflix, Havaianas, RobinHood, Shure, WhatsApp (Meta) and more.

Prior to joining Media.Monks, Sioufi worked in senior roles at several high-profile creative agencies, including The Brooklyn Brothers, where he was chief strategy officer and head of strategy. 

In the seven years he worked for The Brooklyn Brothers, he was involved in standout campaigns including “The new agenda” for The Financial Times, which called on leaders to drive progress in the boardroom and broader society, and “This is parenthood” for WaterWipes, which challenged the damaging ideals of perfect parenting.

He has also worked for agencies such as Wieden + Kennedy London and Fallon London, where he was strategy director, and as a sr. strategist for Sid Lee Amsterdam & Carat Global. 

While at Wieden + Kennedy, Sioufi led the agency’s biggest account--Sainsbury’s--through the pandemic. During this time, the agency created the brand’s most talked about Christmas campaign, “Food is home. Home is Christmas.”

Sioufi is passionate about making the advertising industry more diverse and has been involved with Brixton Finishing School acting as a tutor and mentor for the past two years.

During his time at The Brooklyn Brothers, Sioufi also co-founded Night School, one of the first agency DE&I initiatives designed to attract more diverse talent into the creative industries. While he is no longer involved, that entity is now in its fourth year and works as a springboard for individuals from underrepresented ethnicities and backgrounds to get into full-time roles at agencies, marketing departments and production companies.

Eight directors sign with animation house A+C Studios

U.K. animation house A+C Studios is launching its directorial roster with eight signings for global representation spanning commercials, branded content, promos and short films.

The infusion of talent includes Ida Melum, Mai Vu, Lina Kalcheva and Antonin Niclass, all National Film and Television School alumni. They are joined by Vida Vega who has an ethereal and illustrative animation style, and Zarina Tucker, a skilled product animator with an eye for color and play. Luiz Stockler offers a unique blend of charming hand-drawn and digital animation techniques, while Jess Deacon is a master of stop-motion animation and paper engineering.

The team has already worked with clients such as BBC, Prada, Ben & Jerry’s, and Dyson, to name a few. 

Dan Richards, founder and director, A+C Studios, said, “We have a strong commitment to nurturing new talent, and these new directors represent some of the best emerging talents in the industry. We’re excited to see what they will bring to our projects.”

Founded in 2007, A+C Studios has grown from its start in Richards’ garage to a custom fitted space that holds three animation production studios, a model-making workshop, a motion design studio, an edit suite, and production office. The expansion of A+C Studios roster solidifies its position in the animation industry.

  • Mai Vu // Hailing from Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City), Vietnam, Vu is an animator and animation director with a passion for stop-motion animation. She began her journey in 2010, creating short films using stop-motion technique, and progressed to writing, animating, and directing in the beloved stop-motion series, Say Hi to Pencil, which ran from 2012 to 2019. Vu has worked on a range of commercials for high-profile clients such as Vietnam Airline, Perfetti Van Melle, Clé de Peau, Pepsi and Forbes. She has a master’s degree in directing animation from the National Film and Television School; her most recent achievement is the screening of her film Spring Roll Dream at the La CineF, Cannes Film Festival 2022.
  • Ida Melum // Melum is a BAFTA and BIFA nominated, and an Annie and RTS awarded animation director based in Sweden. After receiving her acting diploma in Norway, Melum earned her BA in animation at Middlesex University, London. She worked as a stop motion animator on films such as the BAFTA winning Poles Apart, and Facing It, before deciding to get her master’s degree in directing animation at the National Film and Television School. During her time at that school, she made films such as Shopped and Ovary-Acting and has just finished her award-winning BAFTA-nominated graduation film, “Night of the Living Dread. Melum recently finished working on Attenborough’s Wonder of Song, a nature documentary for the BBC, and a festival trailer for Fredrikstad Animation Festival 2022. 
  • Vida Vega // An award-winning 2D animation director and illustrator, Vega works with bold, painterly textures and a strong sense of the traditional craft. Combining digital with analogue paper techniques to make fashion illustrations and expressive drawings. Vega loves to create stories from quiet observed intimate moments; tiny fragments that surprise by revealing more than they initially suggest. In 2012 she won a British Animation Award for Best 2D Commercial, a Silver Shark at Kinsale, Bronze at the London International Awards and several Cannes Lions nominations.   • Jess Deacon // Director, paper engineer and stop motion animator, Deacon’s short film Revolution won the PDN Photo Annual Award for Animation and was officially selected for several international animation and film festivals including London International Animation Festival, Fantoche International Animation Festival, Melbourne International Animation Festival, New Zealand International Film Festival and Washington DC Environmental Film Festival.
  • Antonin Niclass // Niclass is a Swiss French director and animator who graduated from the National Film and Television School in London with his film Do Not Feed the Pigeons winning numerous international awards including a BAFTA for best short animation. Niclass handcrafts tactile stop-motion pieces, combining shabby chic animation craft with a tender sense of humor that leads audiences to experience known places from a new perspective. Using animation to depict the small things of everyday life, he brings both rawness and poetry to his work. Niclass likes to show human connections or relationships often without using any words at all. Whether it’s a bittersweet taste or emotional storytelling, his films incorporate clever tricks and techniques to capture the audience.
  • Luiz Stockler // An award-winning Brazilian-British animation director, animator, illustrator and filmmaker working and living between London and Bucharest. Stockler is a graduate of The University of Wales, Newport, and The Royal College of Art. His style is minimalistic, playful and character driven, which drives home both simple and complex ideas. Stockler’s work has been recognized by the Royal Television Society, Vimeo Staff Picks and the Adobe Design Achievement Awards and his short films have been screened and awarded in festivals around the world.
  • Zarina Tucker // Tucker brings a wealth of experience and talent as a product stop-motion animator. With an impressive portfolio of work for brands such as Esquire, Naturya, Happy Socks, and Honest Burger, Tucker has proven herself to be a master of bringing products to life through the art of stop-motion animation. 
  • Lina Kalcheva // Originally from Bulgaria, currently based in England, and a recent graduate from the U.K.’s National Film and Television School, Kalcheva is an award-winning animation director. Coming from a painting background, she has studied fine art, theatre, film and animation, Kalcheva works in 2D, multiplane, stop-motion and in-between; using combinations of drawing, painting, clay and found natural materials. Her films are inspired by mythology, nature, the occult, identity, and human relationships. Her National Film and Television School graduation film Other Half premiered in Cannes Festival’s Cinéfondation selection and has screened in over 60 film festivals, including Chicago IFF, Rhode Island FF, Hollyshorts and Interfilm Berlin, winning 13 awards, notably the Anima’t Award for Best Short Animation at the Oscar-qualifying Sitges Film Festival. As well as receiving 20 other nominations among which are from the British Animation Awards, the Melies d’Argent and the MPSE Golden Reel Awards. Kalcheva is currently co-directing the short VR game Tea is Served and is finishing development on her next animation short, Dawn Chorus.
