Apple, Iconoclast, Jung von Matt Top Shortlisted Entries After 1st Stage of D&AD Awards Judging
Apple's "Bounce" earned four shortlist mentions in the first round of D&AD Awards judging.

D&AD has unveiled the shortlisted entries for categories across Impact, Side Hustle and Film Craft. Topping the rankings of companies for these categories with six shortlisted entries apiece are Apple, production house Iconoclast in Paris, and German agency Jung von Matt AG.

Four of Apple’s six shortlisted entries were for its AirPods “Bounce” commercial--in the Direction, Production Design (Entertainment), Production Design (Filmed Advertising) and VFX categories. “Bounce” was directed by Oscar Hudson via Pulse Films for TBWA/Media Arts Lab, with Framestore serving as the VFX house. Apple AirPods’ “Snap” gained a shortlist mention for Editing while the short film Daughter, shot on the iPhone 11 Pro garnered shortlist inclusion in the Direction category (helmed by Theodore Melfi, produced by brother and RadicalMedia).

Four of Iconoclast’s six shortlisted entries were for the LaCoste spot “Crocodile Inside” from agency BETC Paris--in the Cinematography, Production Design, VFX (Compositing) and VFX (Special Effects) categories. Iconoclast’s other two shortlisted entries were for Casting: Gucci’s “Cruise 2020 Come As You Are” and 30 Millions d’Amis’ “We Are The Champions.”

Jung von Matt’s six shortlisted entries included two for BMW’s “The Small Escape”--in the Direction and Cinematography categories. The other four shortlist mentions were for BMW Group Mini’s “Toughest Test” (Sound Design & Use of Music), NDH Elbphilharomie Orchestra’s “Four Seasons--Composed By Climate Data” (Sound Design & Use of Music), Robert Bosch’s “#LikeABosch” (Casting) and TUA’s “When I have to go” video (Sound Design & Use of Music).

Following Apple, Iconoclast and Jung von Matt was agency Cossette with five shortlisted entries. AMV BBDO, Droga5 (London and NY), Goodby Silverstein & Partners and Stink Films were next, each with four shortlisted entries.

The Impact categories highlight work that addresses some of the globe’s most pressing issues and showcases how creative thinking can be a force for driving positive change, in the belief that purpose can enhance business success and value, alongside promoting collective responsibility for the global sustainability agenda.

Introduced last year, the Side Hustle category reflects the increasing number of creatives applying their skills and personal passions to side projects. From creating new businesses to developing initiatives to address social and environmental issues, this category aims to spotlight world class creativity beyond people’s day jobs.

All 150 shortlisted pieces are showcased on the D&AD website.

Across these categories spanning Film Craft, Impact and Side Hustle, the top five ranking countries by number of Shortlisted Entries are:

  • Canada - 8 Entries 

The shortlist follows the organization’s recent announcement to continue its prestigious annual awards program despite disruptions caused by the global coronavirus outbreak. Entrants across these categories will have to wait until June 9 to find out whether they have won a Pencil, which will be announced digitally across the D&AD website and social channels. 

This shortlist announcement only includes 10 out of the total 34 categories. Further shortlists will be unveiled once the judging for each category closes.

While hosting a 2020 ceremony is not possible due to coronavirus, D&AD will be announcing this year’s Pencil winners via their website and in a social campaign designed by Studio Dumbar.

D&AD also announced an official partnership with Adobe that will bring D&AD Awards 2020 and a selection of D&AD Festival keynotes to the creative community via Adobe Live from June onwards.
