The Directors Guild of America unveiled the nominees for the DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2018, as well as the nods for the First-Time Feature Film Director honor.

Earning nominations in both categories was Bradley Cooper for his feature directorial debut, A Star is Born.

Joining him for the marquee Directorial Achievement in Feature Film Award are fellow nominees Alfonso Cuaron for Roma; Peter Farrelly for Green Book; Spike Lee for BlacKkKlansman; and Adam McKay for Vice.

Farrelly and Lee are both first-time DGA Award nominees. This marks the second career Guild nod for Cuaron who won in 2013 for Gravity. Also garnering his second career feature nomination was McKay whose first came for The Big Short in 2015. McKay additionally picked up a separate DGA Award nomination yesterday in the TV competition for the dramatic series Succession. He thus has a total of three career DGA noms.

Thomas Schlamme, president of the DGA, said of this year’s field of nominees, “To be chosen by one’s peers in a year full of such extraordinary films is the true mark of outstanding directorial achievement. In bringing all elements of the filmmaking process together, each of these directors has demonstrated an exceptional command of the medium, creating excellence for the screen. Congratulations to all of the nominees.”

Outstanding Achievement for a First-Time Director
In addition to Cooper, the other nominees for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for 2018 are: Bo Burnham for Eighth Grade; Carlos Lopez Estrada for Blindspotting; Matthew Heineman for A Private War; and Boots Riley for Sorry to Bother You.

All are first-time DGA nominees except for Heineman, who made his narrative feature debut with A Private War. Heineman as a documentary filmmaker earned two prior DGA Award nominations, winning both times--for Cartel Land in 2015 and City of Ghosts in 2017.

Winners will be announced and honored at the 71st Annual DGA Awards on Saturday evening, February 2, at the Hollywood & Highland Center’s Ray Dolby Ballroom in Hollywood.
