"Soul" earns animated feature honor; TV winners include "The Mandalorian," "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," "Hamilton"

The sound mixing team behind Sound of Metal topped the Motion Pictures-Live Action category at the 57th Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Awards during a virtual ceremony on Saturday evening (4/17).

The other feature film winners recognized for outstanding achievement in sound mixing were Soul in the animated arena and The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart in the documentary competition.

On the television side, an episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel earned distinction in the best one-hour TV series for sound mixing category while the half-hour TV series honor went to an installment of The Mandalorian. Among other sound mixing TV winners were Hamilton for non-fiction special and The Queen’s Gambit for best limited series.

George Clooney was presented with the prestigious CAS Filmmaker honor. In his acceptance remarks, Clooney recalled a sound mixer collaborator, Ed Tise, wryly letting a cinematographer know that on an airplane the movie's picture is available for free but passengers have to pay for earphones. This quip underscored for Clooney how essential sound is in filmmaking. He said that you have to be on a mixing stage to fully realize how profoundly audio impacts a movie.

Also receiving a special honor, the CAS Career Achievement Award, was production sound mixer William B. Kaplan, CAS.  Among those presenting the life achievement kudo to Kaplan, a seven-time Oscar nominee, were directors Robert Zemeckis and John Landis. And in his acceptance remarks, Kaplan acknowledged varied colleagues and collaborators, including directors Zemeckis, Landis and “the late and wonderful” Tony Scott.
