LAS VEGAS (AP) --

"Pacific Rim" filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and "Metal Gear Solid" video game creator Hideo Kojima had big plans for their top-secret interactive collaboration.

"We had great ideas that I think would have done fantastic," del Toro said on stage Thursday at the Academy of Interactive Arts and Science's annual D.I.C.E. Summit.

The writer-director of such films as "Pan's Labyrinth" and "Crimson Peak" reunited with Kojima for a talk at the 15th annual gathering of elite members of the video game industry. The appearance marked the pair's first public appearance together since their video game, "Silent Hills," was canceled last year by publisher Konami.

The title was intended to be the next installment in the long-running "Silent Hill" horror franchise and feature "The Walking Dead" actor Norman Reedus. Del Toro and Kojima teased it last year with the release of a mysterious PlayStation 4 demo called More

LAS VEGAS (AP) --

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences wants to empower women to create video games.

The organization unveiled a new initiative Wednesday called WomenIn that seeks to boost gender diversity in the male-dominated gaming industry.

"When I grew up playing games - and I can say this because it's true - games were made by guys for guys," interactive academy president Martin Rae told a crowd gathered for a breakfast meeting kicking off the 15th annual DICE Summit. "We have an entirely different industry today. Everybody plays games."

The Electronic Software Association trade group says about 44 percent of gamers are woman but only about 18 percent of game developers surveyed at last year's Game Developers Conference identified as female.

Rae said the initiative will include sponsoring scholarships and internships, building a mentor database and hosting events at studios for women More

NEW YORK (AP) --

The long-awaited sequel to Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" now has a release date. Alcon Entertainment announced Thursday that it will be land in theaters on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend in January 2018.

"Sicario" director Denis Villeneuve is taking over for Scott in the sequel to his 1982 science-fiction classic. It will star Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, reprising his role as Rick Deckard.

Alcon, which is producing the film, said it takes place several decades after the conclusion to the original "Blade Runner." Roger Deakins, who has previously worked with Villeneuve on "Prisoners" and "Sicario," will serve as cinematographer.

The Warner Bros. release will begin shooting in July.

NEW YORK (AP) --

Amazon has acquired Woody Allen's latest movie, adding one of film's biggest names to its growing slate of original titles.

Amazon said Thursday that it will distribute Allen's currently untitled film in a traditional theatrical release in North America this summer, followed by a streaming release through its subscription service, Amazon Prime. The film is a romantic comedy set in the 1930s that was shot last summer in New York and Los Angeles. It stars Kristen Stewart, Steve Carell and Parker Posey.

The deal also extends Amazon's relationship with Allen, who is prepping a six-episode TV series for the online retailer. That series, to star Elaine May and Miley Cyrus, is to start shooting in March.

"Like all beginning relationships, there is much hope, mutual affection and genuine goodwill - the lawsuits will come later," said Allen in a statement.

LAS VEGAS (AP) --

For elite members of the video game industry, the D.I.C.E. Summit isn't merely a chance to schmooze at the poker table or on the golf course in Las Vegas. It's also an opportunity to address issues and innovations, ranging from gender diversity to virtual reality.

"It's really about people in the industry taking a break from what they're working on and re-engaging in this medium they're so passionate about," said Martin Rae, president of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, which organizes the D.I.C.E. Summit.

While the 15th annual gathering officially starts Tuesday with poker, golf and "Magic: The Gathering" tournaments, the serious business begins Wednesday morning, when the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences Foundation will unveil a new initiative to promote gender diversity in the gaming industry.

According to the Electronic Software Association trade group, about 44 percent of gamers are woman, but only about 18 More

LONDON (AP) --

The head of the British Academy Film and Television Awards says its annual ceremony does not feature more ethnic minority nominees because the film industry itself is not diverse enough.

Amanda Berry says she supports a peaceful protest against the lack of diversity outside the star-studded event, being held in London on Sunday.

Berry told the Daily Telegraph newspaper that not enough movies are made with diverse talent so "the pool of people to draw award winners from isn't diverse enough." She added that "people can only vote on what they've seen."

Her comments follow a controversy surrounding racial diversity at the Oscars.

Two black actors have been nominated for BAFTAs this year: Idris Elba for best supporting actor and "Star Wars" actor John Boyega for a rising star award.

BERLIN (AP) --

The director of "Fire at Sea" - a documentary about the Italian island of Lampedusa, where thousands of asylum-seekers have been arriving from lawless Libya - says he wanted "to show the tragedy that's playing out in front of our eyes ... We're all responsible."

Director Gianfranco Rosi spoke after the film was screened Saturday at the Berlin International Film Festival, where it is one of two documentaries in competition for the prestigious Golden Bear award.

The Italian director contrasts the native islanders' everyday life with the arrival of the many men, women and children making the dangerous trip from Africa across the Mediterranean Sea on decrepit smugglers' boats. Longing for freedom and prosperity, many of the migrants drown on the perilous passage to Europe, their dead bodies often pulled out of the water in Lampedusa.
