PARIS (AP) --

The European Union has congratulated director Ken Loach, who took the Palme d'Or in Cannes for "I, Daniel Blake," a film partly funded by the European Commission.

Loach received the French Riviera festival's top prize Sunday night for the film about a disabled carpenter in northern England fighting for social assistance. The production received almost 100,000 euros ($112,000) from the Creative Europe program.

Romanian Cristian Mungiu's film "Graduation," which won Sunday's Best Director award, also received support.

The program, which has supported 14 other Palme d'Or winners, co-funds the development and distribution to several EU countries of films that contribute to "cultural diversity."

Commissioner Gunther H. Oettinger, responsible for digital economy and society, congratulated both the teams "for this extraordinary success."

BEIJING (AP) --

It could be a blockbuster. At least that's what a Chinese-American movie studio hopes to produce in a sci-fi thriller based on the popular 1980s video game Tetris.

The $80 million project is the first from the newly formed Threshold Global Studios, a joint venture between Chinese entertainment investor Bruno Wu's Seven Star Works and producer Larry Kasanoff's California-based Threshold Entertainment Group, which produces live action movies.

The joint venture "will make cross-cultural movies for the global market," a statement released Tuesday from the studio said. Kasanoff added that the 32-year-old video game Tetris "is a perfect first project for this strategy."

The movie, whose name was not mentioned in the release, follows in the mold of such computer game-inspired film productions as "Resident Evil," ''Tomb Raider" and "Mortal Kombat."

Shooting will begin next year and financing is complete, the statement said, and there More

NEW YORK (AP) --

No kidding, "House of Lies" is going out in grand style.

The Showtime comedy is wrapping its five-season run with a finale filmed entirely on location in Havana. This marks the first time an American scripted series has been shot in Cuba since the restoration of diplomatic relations, according to Showtime, which made the announcement on Tuesday.

The episode, titled "No Es Facil" ("It's Not Easy"), premieres June 12.

"House of Lies" has centered on the hijinks of high-flying management consultants played by Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell as they manipulate and fleece their well-heeled clients.

While viewers may miss that show, they won't be without Kristen Bell very long. She will be back in the fall co-starring with Ted Danson in NBC's new comedy "The Good Place."

CANNES, France (AP) --

Lily-Rose Depp and Stephanie "Soko" Sokolinski have a turbulent relationship in their new film "The Dancer," but off camera, the two actresses are friends enjoying the Cannes Film Festival. Sokolinski even helped get Depp the job.

The actresses both play dancers in the feature debut by writer-director Stephanie Di Giusto, which screened at the Cannes festival this week.

"It's her first film and being able to present it here, I'm almost more happy for her," Sokolinski said of her 16-year-old co-star. "I'm like, 'Oh my god, I'm so proud of you,' and she's like, 'I'm proud of you too,' and I'm like, 'No, but I'm proud of you, it's your first film, you're in Cannes, it's amazing.'"

"We're so proud of our director because we know how hard she worked on it," added Depp, daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis. "She's been researching and working on this for five years before we even started shooting."

CANNES, France (AP) --

Actress Gong Li made a head-turning return to the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival, but the "Memoirs of a Geisha" star said she's disappointed at the absence of Chinese films at the festival this year.

Not a single Chinese film is in competition, out of competition, or selected for any other category. Gong said she believes that's a sign of an industry that cares too deeply about the dollar sign.

"Of course this is about money," she said Wednesday. "We need to tell everyone that a movie is not merely for entertainment. It might leave you with something much deeper for your soul. It's not just for laughs, not just for jokes. It's more than that. There's not a lot of people talking about that in China right now."

The 50-year-old actress, who has previously starred in films in competition at Cannes and who has served as a jury member, this year is a guest of the french cosmetics brand L'Oreal, for which she's an ambassador.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --

YouTube is testing a messaging feature in its smartphone app so people can share and discuss videos without resorting to other ways to connect with their friends and family.

The messaging option announced Friday initially is only being offered to a small group of people with YouTube's app installed on an iPhone or device running on Google's Android software. If all goes well, messaging will be included in a future app update available to everyone with an iPhone or an Android phone.

YouTube, part of Alphabet Inc.'s Google, is examining whether the messaging feature will encourage its audience to spend even more time inside its popular video app. Currently, people typically copy links to YouTube and paste them into text messages or other messaging apps such as Snapchat, Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.

By removing a reason for its audience to switch over to another app, YouTube can generate more opportunities to show ads to the more More
