Editor Chuck Willis joins Lost Planet

LOS ANGELES -- 

Postproduction company Lost Planet has added editor Chuck Willis to its talent roster. 

Through his storied career, Willis has been awarded numerous accolades, including a 2023 Clio for the spot “Those Guys,” for Volkswagen, many Cannes Lions, LIAs, ADDYs, AICP Awards, D&AD, an Emmy nomination, as well as a Grammy Award. Three of Willis’ commercial films are in the permanent collection at MoMA. He is well known for his work editing Super Bowl commercials for Go Daddy and Pepsi. For the latter, he cut “Boy In A Bottle,” a lauded Super Sunday spot. Additional advertising collaborations span brands such as Little Caesar’s, Rakuten, Hershey, Citi, Kayak, Lowes, DraftKings, New York Lottery, Dish Network and Foot Locker, among many others.

Actor Chance Perdomo, who rose to fame as a star of "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" and "Gen V," has died at age 27 following a motorcycle crash.

"On behalf of the family and his representatives, it is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Chance Perdomo's untimely passing as a result of a motorcycle accident," a publicist said in a statement issued Saturday evening.

The statement said no one else was involved in the crash. No details about the crash, including when and where it took place, were immediately released.

Perdomo most recently played Andre Anderson on the first season of "Gen V," the college-centric spin-off of Amazon Prime's hit series "The Boys," set in a universe where superheroes are celebrities — and behave as badly as the most notorious. "Oppenheimer" finally premiered Friday in the nation where two cities were obliterated 79 years ago by the nuclear weapons invented by the American scientist who was the subject of the Oscar-winning film. Japanese filmgoers' reactions understandably were mixed and highly emotional.

Toshiyuki Mimaki, who survived the bombing of Hiroshima when he was 3, said he has been fascinated by the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, often called "the father of the atomic bomb" for leading the Manhattan Project.

"What were the Japanese thinking, carrying out the attack on Pearl Harbor, starting a war they could never hope to win," he said, sadness in his voice, in a telephone interview.

LONDON (AP) -- 

The Oscar-winning director of "Oppenheimer," Christopher Nolan, and his wife and producer Emma Thomas, will receive a knighthood and damehood for their services to film, according to a statement on Thursday from the U.K. government.

Their recognition comes after their biopic about J. Robert Oppenheimer, the "father of the atomic bomb," swept the awards season, notably at the Academy Awards earlier this month, where the movie won seven Oscars, including best film and best director.

Nolan, 53, had previously been nominated for "Memento," "Inception" and "Dunkirk."

News of their honors was a bit of a surprise, because they are usually handed out twice in the year, once to mark the new year and then on the birthday of King Charles III, who confers the honors. They are sometimes awarded after special achievements, often related to sports and the arts.

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- 

The Illinois Supreme Court will hear an appeal of actor Jussie Smollett's disorderly conduct conviction for staging a racist and homophobic attack against himself in 2019, then lying to Chicago police about it.

The court on Wednesday accepted the appeal from Smollett, formerly a cast member of the television drama "Empire." It will review a December state appellate court ruling that upheld his 2021 conviction by a Cook County jury.

The case kicked up an international uproar and produced an intensive manhunt by Chicago police detectives.

There is no date set for the high court to hear arguments in the matter.

A special prosecutor refiled charges against Smollett after Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx dropped the case and Smollett forfeited his $10,000 bond and conducted community service, which Smollett argues ended the case.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- 

Allies of Gov. Ron DeSantis and Disney reached a settlement agreement Wednesday in a state court fight over how Walt Disney World is developed in the future following the takeover of the theme park resort's government by the Florida governor.

In a meeting, the DeSantis-appointed members of the board of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District approved the settlement agreement, ending almost two years of litigation that was sparked by DeSantis' takeover of the district from Disney supporters following the company's opposition to Florida's so-called "Don't Say Gay" law.

The 2022 law bans classroom lessons on sexual orientation and gender identity in early grades and was championed by the Republican governor, who used Disney as a punching bag in speeches until he suspended his presidential campaign this year.

NEW YORK (AP) -- 

NBC News cut ties Tuesday with former Republican National Committee chief Ronna McDaniel less than a week after hiring her as an on-air political contributor, a decision that came following a furious protest by some of its journalists and commentators.

In announcing the decision in a memo, NBC Universal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde apologized to staff members who felt let down by the hire, acknowledging he had signed off on it.

"No organization, particularly a newsroom, can succeed unless it is cohesive and aligned," Conde wrote. "Over the last few days, it has become clear that this appointment undermines that goal."

There was no immediate comment from McDaniel. She found out she lost her job through media reports, not from NBC directly, said a person close to her who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about it publicly.

March Madness: TV ratings slightly up over last year despite Sunday's blowouts

The first three days of the NCAA Tournament attracted record ratings, only to see the momentum stifled due to Sunday's games being blowouts.

Overall, the tournament is averaging 9.07 million viewers on CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV. That is a slight increase over the 9.05 million average at this point last year.

Through Saturday, the tournament averaged 9.0 million, making it the most-watched through that stage.

Sunday's games averaged 8.91 million, an 8% decrease over last year. The average winning margin of the eight games was 18.9 points, including Duke's 93-55 blowout of James Madison and Purdue's 106-67 rout of Utah State, both on CBS.

Saturday's eight second-round games averaged 10.8 million, making it the most-watched second round Saturday in tournament history.
