Cannes: Brazilians stress land plight of indigenous people

CANNES, France (AP) -- 

Cast and crew members of the Brazilian film "The Dead and the Other" held up placards on the Cannes Film Festival red carpet Wednesday to protest what they called "the genocide" of indigenous people in Brazil.

The movie is based on the filmmakers' experience living for nearly a year in a village of Kraho people in north Brazil. It is playing in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.

Co-directors Joao Salaviza and Renee Nader Messora joined actor Ihjac Kraho in displaying the signs calling for the protection of indigenous lands. They were attending the premiere of "Dogman."

Brazilian politicians last year changed how land is to be demarcated for 900,000 aboriginal people. Activists maintain that without more protection, indigenous groups are being pushed off their land in violent disputes.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary "RBG" has box office muscle

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- 

The Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary "RBG " is turning into a mini box office phenomenon. The film cracked the top 10 this weekend with $1.2 million from only 180 screens nationwide.

In just over two weeks of limited release it's made over $2.2 million

Exhibitor Relations box office analyst Jeff Bock says documentaries don't often enter the top 10 if they're not politically charged or about cuddly animals, noting that "RBG" is neither. He says that for a documentary, "RBG" is essentially doing blockbuster business.

The film from directors Julie Cohen and Betsy West gives an intimate peek at the life of the famed Supreme Court associate justice from her childhood to her present day pop culture icon status and even her impressive workout routine.

"RBG" expands to 330 screens on Friday.

NEW YORK (AP) -- 

DJ Khaled has reason to be grateful — he's been nominated for a leading six trophies for the BET Awards.

The nominations for next month's ceremony were announced Tuesday night. Among the awards Khaled was nominated for include album of the year for "Grateful" and video of the year for "Wild Thoughts" which featured Rihanna and Bryson Tiller.

Other top nominees include Migos and SZA, both of whom were nominated for four awards.

Bruno Mars, Drake, Beyonce, Jay-Z, Cardi B, and Chris Brown are also up for key awards.

Recent Pulitzer Prize-winner Kendrick Lamar is among the nominees for best album, and he's got competition from himself, for his "Black Panther" soundtrack.

The blockbuster is also nominated for best movie along with "Girls Trip" and "Wrinkle in Time," among other films. Tiffany Haddish is nominated for best actress along with the likes of Issa Rae and Lupita Nyong'o, while Michael B. Jordan faces off against More

ABC says "Roseanne" will concentrate on family, not politics

NEW YORK (AP) -- 

Expect "Roseanne" to cool it on politics and concentrate on family stories when it returns for the second season of its revival next year.

That's the word from ABC Entertainment chief Channing Dungey as she introduced the network's plans for next year on Tuesday. The show's return exceeded all expectations this spring, with the support of Roseanne Barr's character for President Donald Trump attracting attention.

Dungey noted that as the first season went on, the focus shifted from politics to family. She said that direction will continue next season.

ABC is bringing back its "TGIF" Friday comedy schedule in the fall, and Alec Baldwin will star in a Sunday-night talk show.

CANNES, France (AP) -- 

Spike Lee's Ku Klux Klan crime drama "BlacKkKlansman" received a rousing, lengthy standing ovation at the 71st Cannes Film Festival.

Lee's film tells true-life tale of a black police detective in Colorado who infiltrates the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. It was among the most highly anticipated titles at Cannes this year and immediate reaction was positive.

"BlacKkKlansman" ties its story to the violent protests of Charlottesville, Virginia. It stars Denzel Washington's son, John David Washington, alongside Adam Driver and Topher Grace, who plays David Duke.

Lee was outfitted in a shiny purple-and-orange tuxedo and wore one ring declaring "love" on one hand, and "hate" on the other. He bounced into the premiere announcing: "Brooklyn's in the house!"

The "love" and "hate" rings pay homage to his film "Do The Right Thing"; the same jewelry was worn by character Radio Raheem.

Facebook suspends about 200 apps that may have misused data

NEW YORK (AP) -- 

Facebook is suspending about 200 apps that it believes may have misused data.

The social media giant said in a blog post Monday that the suspensions resulted from its investigation into all apps that had access to large amounts of information before Facebook changed its platform policies in 2014. Those changes, according to Facebook, significantly reduced the amount of data that apps could access.

Ime Archibong, vice president of product partnerships, says that if any evidence is found that the suspended apps or other apps have misused data, they will be banned. Users that may have been exposed will be notified, as was the case when the Cambridge Analytica case broke.

The company says that it's canvased thousands of apps so far.

CANNES, France (AP) -- 

A day after joining the 82 women protest at the Cannes Film Festival, Salma Hayek says change for women in Hollywood is already happening.

In a conversation Sunday as part of the "Women in Motion" talk series at Cannes, Hayek said her production company is having trouble keeping up with the demand for female writers and directors. The actress-producer said she's sold four TV shows about women this year.

The change, Hayek said, "already happened."

Hayek also remarked on her allegation of sexual harassment made against Harvey Weinstein in an op-ed in December. Weinstein at the time issued a lengthy statement of denial.

Hayek said Weinstein specifically contested her claim and that of Lupita Nyong'o because they're women of color.

"Rick and Morty" gets approval for 70 more episodes

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- 

Fans of the animated science fiction comedy series "Rick and Morty" can rest easy.

Series co-creator Justin Roiland posted on Instagram on Thursday that 70 more episodes have been approved for the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim late-night programming. There were 31 episodes in its first three seasons.

The series, which debuted in 2013, follows mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his grandson Morty Smith. It was the top TV comedy among millennials in 2017 and enjoys digital, livestream, gaming and retail success.

To celebrate the renewal, the pop-up shop "Rickmobile" will launch a nationwide tour in Atlanta on May 17.

Chastain's female-led spy film "355" sells to Universal at Cannes

CANNES, France (AP) -- 

In one of the biggest sales of the Cannes Film Festival, Universal Pictures has acquired the female-led spy thriller "355," which Jessica Chastain has promoted as an antidote to male-centered action films.

Universal on Saturday closed the sale of the highly touted project. Earlier this week, Chastain and co-stars Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Lupita Nyong'o and Fan Bingbing posed for photographers and pitched the film to potential buyers.

Simon Kinberg, director of the upcoming X-Men film "Dark Phoenix," in which Chastain co-stars, is slated to direct the film. With an approximate budget of $75 million, "355" was one of the highest-profile projects up for sale in Cannes, the world's largest film market.

Deadline first reported the deal.
