    LOS ANGELES --

The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) unveiled its Ninth Annual ASC Photo Gallery, showcasing an impressive collection of stills captured by nearly 50 of the Society’s esteemed members, including renowned Oscar and Emmy recipients.

“This exhibit has become one of the most anticipated events for our members each year,” said ASC president Shelly Johnson. “For many of us, our love for capturing images began with a still camera. Having the opportunity to revisit and showcase that art form is incredibly exciting for all of us. It’s a chance to celebrate our roots and share our passion for photography.”

The ASC debuted their 2024 collection at the historic ASC Clubhouse during an opening event sponsored by Nikon and Red Digital Cinema. Curated by Paris Chong, director of the Leica Gallery LA, with printing courtesy of Canon, the artwork will remain on display at the Clubhouse for a year, and can also be viewed online in the ASC Store. Individual prints and box sets are available for purchase, with proceeds benefiting the ASC’s Vision Committee’s scholarship program for ASC Master Classes. This committee is dedicated to encouraging and supporting the advancement of underrepresented cinematographers, their crews, and other filmmakers.

“For the past several years, this exhibit has shown the world another expression of our members’ creativity,” said ASC Photo Gallery chairperson Charlie Lieberman. “This collection not only highlights their extraordinary talent but also their dedication to the craft. It’s truly inspiring to see the diverse range of perspectives and styles represented in this collection.”

Exhibiting photographers include ASC members Jeremy Benning, Alice Brooks, Antonio Calvache, Russell Carpenter, Ernest Dickerson, Jean-Marie Dreujou, Eagle Egilsson, Frederick Elmes, Greig Fraser, Dejan Georgevich, Stephen Goldblatt, Dana Gonzales, Magdalena Górka, Shana Hagan, Ernest Holzman, Jon Joffin, Kira Kelly, Alar Kivilo, Dan Laustsen, Denis Lenoir, Peter Levy, Charlie Lieberman, Karl-Walter Lindenlaub, Mihai Mălaimare Jr., Suki Medenčević, Erik Messerschmidt, Anastas Michos, C. Kim Miles, Charles Minsky, George Mooradian, Rachel Morrison, M. David Mullen, James Neihouse, Arlene Nelson, Sam Nicholson, Crescenzo Notarile, Phedon Papamichael, Sean Porter, Jaron Presant, Cynthia Pusheck, Armando Salas, Roberto Schaefer, Ben Seresin, Steven V. Silver, John Simmons, Stijn van der Veken, Mark Vargo, and Mandy Walker.

The ASC was founded in 1919. There are 447 members today who have national roots in some 20 countries. There are also 274 associate members from ancillary segments of the industry.

Federal judge blocks Nexstar-Tegna TV station merger until antitrust lawsuit is settled

A federal judge has blocked a $6.2 billion merger of local television giants Nexstar Media Group and rival Tegna until an antitrust lawsuit is resolved.

U.S. District Court Chief Judge Troy L. Nunley in Sacramento, California, made the ruling late Friday afternoon, finding that eight attorneys general and DirecTV were likely to prevail in their legal bid to stop the merger. The attorneys general, all Democrats, and DirecTV contend the merger will lead to higher prices for consumers, stifle local journalism and that the deal runs afoul of federal laws designed to protect against monopolies.

The deal, announced last year and approved by the Federal Communications Commission, would create a company that owns 265 television stations in 44 states and the District of Columbia, most of them local affiliates of one of the "Big Four" national networks: ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.

That would likely give Nexstar the power to raise the retransmission fees it charges to video programming distributors like DirecTV, which means higher bills for consumers, Nunley wrote. The company also has a track record of consolidating local television news stations when it owns more than one station in a market, the judge said, meaning viewers "will lose options for where to get their local news."

The deal could also force distributors like DirecTV to comply with Nexstar's demands for higher broadcast fees or risk leaving subscribers potentially unable to watch things like Sunday NFL football games, the judge said.

Stopping the merger for now is "in the public interest," Nunley wrote.

Attorneys representing Nexstar and Tegna did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nexstar's attorneys told the court the deal has already been reviewed... Read More
