cummins & partners acquires Brooklyn-based ad agency dc3

Todd Irwin (l) and Sean Cummins
    NEW YORK --

Global independent ad agency cummins & partners has acquired Brooklyn-based creative agency dc3, according to Sean Cummins, founder and global CEO. The goal of the acquisition is to further expand the cummins & partners brand as a global creative leader. cummins & partners opened in New York in June 2014, followed in April 2015 with the opening of their second international office in Toronto. cummins & partners was founded in Australia in 2011 and has grown to become one of the top independent ad agency networks in Australia, with a growing global footprint.

dc3 is a boutique shop, which brings a strong creative anchor to cummins & partners’ North America operations. Founded by creative veteran Todd Irwin, dc3 will fold into the Manhattan, New York, base of the expanding agency. Irwin has been named as partner and chief creative officer, joining Cummins and chief strategist Arwa Mahdawi on the agency’s partnership Team, which recently announced Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf as business partners.

“I have been looking at a number of agencies over the last six months, and it wasn’t just the businesses that mattered, it was the quality of the people. In Todd we have found an outstanding creative talent and a great businessman. That is the killer combination” said Cummins. “New York is an idiosyncratic market and we came in here cold. And purposely so. You can’t impose your style on the market and hope it will respond. You have to learn the rhythms. We have a great culture and philosophy that comes from our Australian roots…but you need a New York savvy. Todd has already shown us how the two will blend perfectly.”

Irwin has produced work for Verizon, Nikon, Coca-Cola, Remy Martin, Lacoste, Mountain Dew, Monique Lhuillier, and Lord and Taylor to name a few.

Elon Musk’s X platform investigated in France for alleged data tampering and fraud

French prosecutors have launched a police investigation into alleged data tampering and fraud involving X, Elon Musk's social media platform.

The Paris prosecutor's office, in a statement Friday, announced the opening of the investigation, and said that a branch of the French gendarmerie is conducting the inquiry.

The investigation is looking into two alleged offenses "in particular" — organized tampering with the functioning of an automated data processing system, and organized fraudulent extraction of data from an automated data processing system, the statement said.

It didn't give details of the alleged wrongdoing. It said that the investigation is targeting both the platform and people, without naming them or saying what role they might have within X.

The prosecutor's office said that it was acting on information that two people provided in January to its cybercrimes unit. One of them is a member of parliament, and the other is a senior official in a French government institution. It didn't identify them or the institution.

It said the two people alleged the suspected use of X's algorithm for the "purposes of foreign interference." It didn't detail the alleged interference or how the algorithm was allegedly used.

The prosecutor's office said that it decided this week to open the police investigation, after conducting its own "verifications" and having received additional information from French researchers and "various public institutions."

The Associated Press has emailed X's press office, seeking comment.

Kelvin Chan contributed to this report from London.
