    LOS ANGELES --

Director Denis Villeneuve will receive the Cinema Audio Society’s Filmmaker of the Year Award at the 61st CAS Awards on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.

“Denis Villeneuve is a trailblazer in the world of cinema, and it is with great excitement that we honor him with the 2025 CAS Filmmaker Award,” said CAS president Peter Kurland. “Villeneuve has an exceptional ability to intertwine storytelling, sound and visuals, crafting immersive experiences that linger in the minds of audiences long after the final frame. We celebrate his remarkable contributions to film, as he continuously challenges the status quo and redefines what is possible in storytelling.”

Villeneuve is an Academy Award®-nominated French-Canadian filmmaker whose astute attention to detail and unique visuals have established him as one of the premier directors working today. “Dune: Part Two,” the monumental continuation of “Dune: Part One,” and conclusion of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, was released to critical acclaim earlier this year.

“I am truly honored to receive the CAS Filmmaker Award. This is especially meaningful to me because sound has always been at the core of my storytelling. It’s a powerful tool of expression that keeps fascinating me. It’s what makes us experience moving images through common wavelengths,” commented Villeneuve. “Furthermore, the immersive power of cinematic sound design and sound dubbing is truly unparalleled when it comes to the theatrical experience. I have been fortunate to work with masters throughout my journey in Hollywood. I am fully aware that I owe them tremendously. I look forward to celebrating the art of sound with all the artists who contribute to its evolution and success.”

“Dune: Part One,” which began Villeneuve’s adaptation of Herbert’s celebrated science fiction novel, premiered in October 2021. It garnered six Academy Awards®, multiple nominations from the Critics’ Choice Awards, Producers Guild, Directors Guild, Writers Guild, and BAFTA, and was recognized by AFI and NBR for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Villeneuve’s impressive filmography includes titles such as “Blade Runner 2049,” “Arrival,” “Sicario,” “Prisoners,” “Enemy,” and “Incendies.” His ability to blend intricate narratives with cutting-edge technology has set a new standard for cinematic storytelling.

This marks the 20th year that the Cinema Audio Society has honored a distinguished filmmaker with this award. Past recipients include industry luminaries such as J.J. Abrams, Alejandro González Iñárritu, George Clooney, Steven Spielberg, and Quentin Tarantino.

The CAS Awards will also honor multi-award-winning re-recording sound mixer Tod A. Maitland CAS with the Career Achievement Award at the ceremony.

EU accuses TikTok of “addictive design” that harms children, seeks changes to protect users

The European Union on Friday accused TikTok of breaching the bloc's digital rules with "addictive design" features that lead to compulsive use by children, in preliminary charges that strike at the heart of the popular video sharing app's operating model.

EU regulators said their two-year investigation found that TikTok hasn't done enough to assess how features such as autoplay and infinite scroll could harm the physical and mental health of users, including minors and "vulnerable adults."

The European Commission said it believes TikTok should change the "basic design" of its service. The commission is the EU's executive arm and enforcer of the 27-nation bloc's Digital Services Act, a sweeping rulebook that requires social media companies to clean up their platforms and protect users, under threat of hefty fines.

    TikTok denied the accusations.

"The Commission's preliminary findings present a categorically false and entirely meritless depiction of our platform, and we will take whatever steps are necessary to challenge these findings through every means available to us," the company said in a statement.

TikTok's features including infinite scrolling, autoplay, push notifications, and highly personalized recommender systems "lead to the compulsive use of the app, especially for our kids, and this poses major risks to their mental health and wellbeing," Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier said at a press briefing in Brussels.

"The measures that TikTok has in place are simply not enough," he said.

The company now has a chance to defend itself and reply to the commission's findings. Regnier said "if they don't do this properly," Brussels could issue a so-called non-compliance decision and possible fine worth up to 6% of... Read More
