The Denver Film Society has made two additions to the CineLatino lineup. “Food Chains,” produced by Eva Longoria, explores the rampant abuse and injustice embedded in America’s agricultural industry. The film will screen on Sunday, September 28 at 12:30 pm at the Sie FilmCenter. CineLatino has been identified as an important platform for “Food Chains” as Longoria will be launching an Oscar campaign for the film by showing it in key Hispanic markets.
On Saturday, September 27 at 11:30 am, the Denver Film Society will offer a free screening of the 1981 film, “Zoot Suit.” In addition, Antonio Mercado along with students from the original production of Zoot Suit Riots will host a panel discussion following the film. In 2004, Mercado and the students of North High School made history with their performance of Zoot Suit Riots, and the play became the first high school production to be staged at the Buell Theater. Ten years later, the students have grown to become community leaders, actors, and activists. Mercado continues to direct theater productions and is launching the national tour of Dreaming Sin Fronteras, on Thursday, September 11 at the historic Holiday Theater. The show will include musical performances from Raul Pacheco of Ozomatli, Ceci Bastida of Tijuana No, Stephen Brackett of the Flobots, and music director Shawn King of DeVotchKa.
“The Denver Film Society exists to bring diverse communities together through film. We cannot think of a better way to bring that to life than to hold a free screening and panel with Mr. Mercado and the students from North High School’s production of Zoot Suit Riots,” says Denver Film Society Programming Manager Ernie Quiroz. “This is going to be an event community leaders, educators, students and families are not going to want to miss as we discuss the importance of bringing history to life and inspiring communities through art.”
The Festival will present eight feature length films, four documentaries and one interactive web series. Highlights include: “The Man Behind The Mask,” with “Lucha Libre” star and subject of the film, El Hijo del Santo in person, along with the director, Gabriela Obregon, a special screening of “Who Is Dayani Cristal?” starring Gael Garcia Bernal, a panel discussion with the Colorado based Project Enye team, Denise Cox and Henry Ansbacher, and the closing night film, Frontera, staring Eva Longoria, Michael Peña and Ed Harris.
