Newly elected HPA president Renard T. Jenkins heads an updated board of directors
    LOS ANGELES --

The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) today announced several updates to its board of directors. As part of HPA’s annual governance cycle, new leadership terms begin on Jan. 1 and include the election of new officers, the appointment of new board members, and the election of a new board president.

The board has elected Renard T. Jenkins as president. Jenkins previously served as vice president of the organization as well as co-chair of the ALL committee, and was the former board liaison for the Young Entertainment Professionals (YEP) program. He is also the former president of Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE). Craig German was elected to serve as vice president. German is the former secretary and continues to serve as board liaison for both YEP and ALL. Rosanna Marino was elected to serve as secretary. Marino will also continue to serve as Program Committee co-chair and as board liaison for Women in Post (WIP). Graylind Wherry was elected to continue to serve in his role as treasurer.

Joining the board are Sohonet’s Chuck Parker, Adobe’s Morgan Prygrocki, and Susan Sachs, who all bring expertise from across the media industry and will help guide the organization through its next phase of growth and strategic initiatives. Prygrocki will also serve as board liaison for the YEP program.

“It is an honor to serve as president of the Hollywood Professional Association at a moment of profound transformation for our industry,” Jenkins said. “HPA stands at the intersection of artistry, technology, and leadership, and I deeply value the members and volunteers who make this community a trusted space for innovation and progress. As we move into the new year, I look forward to helping HPA further connect artists, technologists, and executives in a manner that creates new opportunities for collaboration, learning, and a shared vision as we shape the future of storytelling and media together.”

The organization recognizes Kari Grubin for her dedicated service and contributions during her year-long term and extends its appreciation for her leadership and commitment. While stepping down from the presidency, Grubin will continue to participate in HPA activities including contributing to the planning of the 2026 HPA Tech Retreat.

Since joining the HPA in 2002, Grubin has been privileged to volunteer and support its mission to advance the professional media industry. “I am extremely proud of my years of involvement and of my accomplishments, especially in founding the Women in Post and Young Entertainment Professionals programs, which have helped foster new opportunities and leadership in our community,” said Grubin.

EU accuses TikTok of “addictive design” that harms children, seeks changes to protect users

The European Union on Friday accused TikTok of breaching the bloc's digital rules with "addictive design" features that lead to compulsive use by children, in preliminary charges that strike at the heart of the popular video sharing app's operating model.

EU regulators said their two-year investigation found that TikTok hasn't done enough to assess how features such as autoplay and infinite scroll could harm the physical and mental health of users, including minors and "vulnerable adults."

The European Commission said it believes TikTok should change the "basic design" of its service. The commission is the EU's executive arm and enforcer of the 27-nation bloc's Digital Services Act, a sweeping rulebook that requires social media companies to clean up their platforms and protect users, under threat of hefty fines.

    TikTok denied the accusations.

"The Commission's preliminary findings present a categorically false and entirely meritless depiction of our platform, and we will take whatever steps are necessary to challenge these findings through every means available to us," the company said in a statement.

TikTok's features including infinite scrolling, autoplay, push notifications, and highly personalized recommender systems "lead to the compulsive use of the app, especially for our kids, and this poses major risks to their mental health and wellbeing," Commission spokesman Thomas Regnier said at a press briefing in Brussels.

"The measures that TikTok has in place are simply not enough," he said.

The company now has a chance to defend itself and reply to the commission's findings. Regnier said "if they don't do this properly," Brussels could issue a so-called non-compliance decision and possible fine worth up to 6% of... Read More
