For thousands of years, olive oil has been used in Greek baptisms. But in this spot when the oil runs out, the church must go into its private stash of Gus & Marty’s, a great-tasting olive oil they use on their salads and other recipes. While the Greek baptism is of time-honored importance, the powers that be in the church are clearly reluctant to “waste” their prized Gus & Marty’s on the religious ceremony. The comedic premise–created and honed in a back-and-forth collaboration between the client and the commercial’s director, Barry Bangs–is enhanced all the more with a completely straight approach to capturing the ceremony.
Sparking the idea was the experience that Gus & Marty’s Greek founder had in Greek baptisms. The tongue-in-cheek spot underscores that Gus & Marty’s, a small Greek olive oil brand out of Brooklyn, is an irresistible taste treat for the ages.
The film went live on Gus & Marty’s Instagram this month and has been reposted by a number of other accounts since. The brand hasn’t bought TV media, though it is exploring targeted theatrical.
