Beats by Dre’s “You Love Me,” out of agency Translation and produced by PRETTYBIRD

Beats by Dre’s “You Love Me,” produced by PRETTYBIRD, is Best in Show, winning Advertising Excellence/ Single Commercial

    NEW YORK -- (SPW) --

Winners of the 2021 AICP Show: The Art & Technique of the Commercial were presented tonight at a virtual presentation. Together with the AICP Next Awards, which were presented virtually on July 28, and the AICP Post Awards, presented virtually on July 27, they comprise the AICP Awards’ suite of juried competitions.

Ali Brown, President of PRETTYBIRD, served as Chairperson of the AICP Show, a position she also held for the 2020 AICP Show. All of this year’s winners – along with the entire AICP Show and AICP Next Awards archive – are available for viewing at the newly-redesigned AICP Awards site, www.aicpawards.com. Each year, the honored work from the AICP Show becomes a part of the archives of the Department of Film at The Museum of Modern Art. The collection now numbers over 2,200 pieces of advertising in the motion image.

“You Love Me” for Beats by Dre, out of Translation and directed by Melina Matsoukas of PRETTYBIRD, was honored for Advertising Excellence/Single Commercial. The spot draws a stark contrast between society’s open embrace of Black culture in everything from music and fashion to its often prejudicial treatment of its Black citizens. In addition to winning the Advertising Excellence/Single Commercial honor, “You Love Me” was also honored in the categories of Concept, Direction and Visual Style.

Kevin Wilson, Jr. of Chelsea Pictures, was honored as Best New Director. He was honored for his work on “Widen the Screen” for P&G, created by Grey/New York. The spot captured the effects of profiling Black people based on racial stereotypes, and urged viewers to take a broader view of Black life by showing these scenes in a wider context, as part of everyday living.

The most honored production company in the AICP Show was Chelsea Pictures, with six honors, followed by PRETTYBIRD with five. Blue-Tongue Films, MJZ, Pulse Films, SMUGGLER and Somesuch each received three honors.

Among directors, Melina Matsoukas of PRETTYBIRD received four honors, followed by Kevin Wilson, Jr. and Nisha Ganatra of Chelsea Pictures, with three each. Also earning three honors were directors Oscar Hudson of Pulse Films and Spencer Susser of Blue-Tongue Films.

On the agency front, Droga5 and Translation led the list with four honors each, followed by AMV BBDO, Grey and Wieden+Kennedy with three each.

Topping the list of honored brands was Beats by Dre, with four honors, followed by Apple, Humane Society International, Libresse/Bodyform and The New York Times with three each.

The Art & Technique of the Commercial has a bifurcated judging system, which begins with a series of online judging panels featuring over 400 judges from across the country and around the world, with experts in various fields judging work across the 22categories. The process culminates in the meeting of the Curatorial Committee, which took place virtually this year. The committee is the final arbiter in the disposition of the Show, confirming eligibility and appropriateness to category.

Graphics and titles were created by Ingenuity and Cosmo Street, with music by RNDM ORDR. The sponsor reel was created by The Colonie, with music by Noisefloor.

Sponsors help make all of the AICP awards competitions and events possible. AICP Partners and Supporting Partners, who support all AICP events throughout the year, are: CAPS – A Cast & Crew Entertainment Company, Universal Studios and Wrapbook (Partners); and Film Offices of The Hawaiian Islands; Musicbed + Filmsupply; Sony Pictures Studios; and The TEAM Companies (Supporting Partners).

The 2021 AICP Awards Sponsors include Aspen Travel, AwardCore, BMGPM and BMG Bespoke, The Colonie, Color Lab, Cosmo Street, Heard City, Hello World, International Digital Centre – IDC, Istros Media, Ingenuity, Kodak, Little Black Book, Noisefloor, RNDM ORDER, The ROOTS, S'well, SHOOT Magazine | SHOOTonline,  Source | SHOTS | Slate and Whitehouse Post.

    About AICP
AICP represents, exclusively, the interests of independent companies that specialize in the production and post production of commercials in various media—film, video, digital—for advertisers and agencies. The association, with national offices in New York and Los Angeles as well as regional chapters across the country, serves as a strong collective voice for this $5 billion-plus industry. Founded in 1972, AICP assists its members by: disseminating information; representing production and post production companies within the advertising community in business circles, in labor negotiations and dealing with employment issues; and before governmental officials; developing industry standards and tools; providing professional development; and marketing American production and post production via events and awards shows.

2026: Connect Today for a Better Tomorrow (And Beyond)

    Thursday, January 15, 2026
    Ross MacRae, CEO, Agency Source

In 2026, the thing that stands out most is how fast this industry is moving, faster than at any point I’ve seen in my career. Agencies, brands, and production companies are constantly shifting, merging, restructuring, and rebuilding. And the people inside them are moving just as quickly. The average lifespan of an agency creative these days is about 18 months. That means if you connect with someone today, chances are they’ll be somewhere completely different by next year, maybe even brand-side. The good news is that you’re essentially building a relationship with multiple clients at once - as long as you keep track of where they go! That level of movement changes what sales and outreach actually mean. When I started, sales in our industry were seen as unnecessary, even a bit smarmy. Agencies had internal service buying teams whose role was to be aware of what production services were out there--which meant that production companies and reps could remain on the agencies' radar with little effort. But today, those agency-side roles have disappeared, and the responsibility has shifted wholly to production companies and reps to make sure they are continuously visible. Whether people like the word “sales” or not, the truth is that you cannot rely on posting your reels on your site and expecting the phone to ring. It never really worked that way, and it certainly doesn’t now. One of the biggest misunderstandings I still encounter is about what a contact database is for. People assume it’s just a place to download email addresses and send out massive blasts. That was never the right way to do it, not 15... Read More
