Audio post and sound design studio, launched by veteran mixer Cory Melious, announces plans to offer full service recording and mixing capabilities.
While New Yorkers still lament the closing of Coffee Shop on Union Square West, producers can be cheered by the news that Alt_Mix, the boutique audio post and sound design studio launched by Cory Melious last year, is moving into the neighborhood.
Melious has announced that Alt_Mix (www.altmixstudio.com) is setting up shop in the Union Square offices of MassiveMusic, the global music composition studio headquartered in Europe.
Melious reached out to MassiveMusic’s Executive Creative Director Eric David Johnson, aka DJ Bunny Ears, to get the arrangement going. “We were chatting about the state of the music and sound industry, and I mentioned I was looking for a dedicated space in New York to handle Alt_Mix projects,” Melious says. “They happened to have a mixing suite that was underutilized, and so it just made sense.”
Johnson, formerly the Head of Music at McCann New York, says having Alt_Mix work out of the MassiveMusic space is a win-win for both companies. “I’ve known Cory for years, and have always admired his work ethic and dedication to his craft,” says Johnson. “I’ve watched him build Alt_Mix into an exciting new resource for producers, and knew he’d feel right at home here. We’re thrilled to have him, and we value the creative energy he’ll bring to our office.”
“We’re still primarily a remote operation, as we were when we first launched Alt_Mix,” Melious explains. “But it’s always beneficial to collaborate in person when the project deems it necessary. Even though we’re still able to provide superior sound design and mix remotely for the vast majority of our clients, it’s great to have an option for in-person work for those larger or more complex projects. Plus the benefits of our having a small footprint outweighs the fee structure at the big audio shops. We’re able to keep our costs down and pass those savings along to our clients.”
Melious is outfitting the studio that will house Alt_Mix with an array of gear and software, including a huge assortment of plugins, including Fabfilter, Waves, Everything Izotope, Sound Toys, Indoor, Slapper, Source Connect, ipDTL, among others. It’ll feature Adams and Genelec monitors and Sennheiser and Neumann mics.
The move reflects a steady uptick in assignments since Melious launched Alt_Mix in late 2022. Recent projects include providing sound design and mix on a six-minute documentary about the use of technology in surveying the Great Barrier Reef, produced for Dell and agency VMLY&R, along with spots for Roundup from MullenLowe, Food Lion out of GSD&M and Avis out of Big Village, as well as promos for YouTube’s NFL Sunday Ticket at HBO/Max. Other clients include Meta, MLB, Verizon, and WhatsApp, along with such agencies as Tombras, Translation and The Via Agency.

Union’s Jono Griffith Brings Fans, Animal Kingdom, and a Giant Together For “Magic Sunday”
Never before have humans, animals, and other creatures so seamlessly integrated and so fondly interacted in the shared experience of Sunday football. YouTube TV's new spot, “Magic Sunday,” is exactly as advertised: a fantastic blend of humor, whimsy, and sports fandom. Originated at the YouTube Creative Studio, directed by Matthijs van Heijningen of MJZ, with VFX by The Mill, and edited by Union’s Jono Griffith, the project succeeds in part because of the team’s attention to detail (like the ram fluffing the couch cushions and the jaguar eyeing the cardinal), which playfully captures the excitement of NFL Sunday Ticket. “This one was a treat of a job,” says Griffith. “The editing involved making sure there was space and time for the animation to communicate at its best whilst deciding what would be most charming. Movie magic is a lot of fun, and it was a team effort with the guiding eye of my friend Matthijs and the experience of The Mill; the script from YouTube Creative Studio was smart and simple and had a big smile all over it, and although it was very ambitious, everyone involved aimed for the top shelf and we got it there…with the smile still intact.” The choice of “Sunday Morning” by the Velvet Underground adds a perfect touch to the light-hearted tone of the spot.
