Believe Media Director Kathryn Ferguson’s “Space To Be,” a short documentary about the Windsor Women’s Center in Northern Ireland, produced by Passion Pictures and Northern Ireland Screen, is now available to view online. The film was commissioned by the same in-house documentary team at The Guardian behind the 2021 Oscar-winning short documentary “Colette.”
“Space To Be” focuses on women living in a loyalist area of Belfast, Northern Ireland who find support from Windsor Women’s Center, which has struggled to keep its doors open since opening in the 1990s – a struggle that intensified when COVID lockdowns started while the film was still in production. “I was eight months pregnant at the time. It was an intense five days hopping in and out of a van across Belfast. It was busy, hectic, filming as much of the activity as possible,” shared Ferguson in an interview with The Guardian. The pandemic required her to adapt the film’s approach, using archival footage to tie current events directly to The Troubles of the 1980s. “This proved to be very fruitful, given that so much of the film is about the impact, and in some cases trauma, which has affected some women as a result of the Northern Irish conflict.”
In addition to her branded and commercial work with Believe Media, Ferguson is currently working on Nothing Compares, a feature documentary due to be released next year.
