Boris FX Silhouette ushers in a landmark release to salute its 20th anniversary year. The digital paint and rotoscoping toolset, renowned as the industry standard, debuts groundbreaking new features. The 2025 release accelerates painting and roto tasks with new 3D tracking imports, three new AI tools for roto, image restoration, and depth map creation, as well as enhanced creative processes.

3D Environments
Silhouette 2025 unlocks a potent new workflow for artists working in 3D environments. The 3D Scene node lets users load Alembic or FBX format scenes directly into Silhouette. Once a format is loaded, users can select 3D tracks, solve them into a plane, place cards in 3D space, and use the cards to add inserts, matchmove, or stabilize footage.
The Unproject/Reproject node decouples motion from a 3D Scene node, effectively stabilizing the motion. The workflow frees artists to paint or composite on a locked-down sequence. Once a task is complete, instantly restore the original motion of the sequence.
AI Tools
Matte Refine ML builds on Silhouette’s AI-based rotoscoping capabilities by helping users generate tricky matte edges that include hair, feathers, fur, and irregular contours. The new tool utilizes AI technology to automatically create natural edges from hard mattes, offering fine detail with semi-transparency. The combination of Matte Assist ML and Matte Refine ML delivers a speedy two-step workflow that instantly creates a hard, animated matte and then intelligently tackles intricate details.
Depth Map ML uses AI to analyze an image and determine the relative distance between each part of a scene. The result is an effortless, high-quality grayscale depth map. It includes two model types to choose from and built-in matte controls to refine results. The addition allows users to control blur, color correct, and create mattes according to specific depth levels.
Frame Fixer ML harnesses AI to remove and restore photo flashes, artifacts, dropped frames, or even change a performance. The tool automates the process in a few simple steps with the option to use it on original footage or painted keyframes.
Workflow Enhancements
PowerMesh Morph allows artists to morph between either painted keyframes or specified frames using Mocha Pro’s sub-planar PowerMesh tracking, which tracks organic objects and warped surfaces. The workflow enables faster retouching of organic deformations while maintaining complete control over the process.
Compound nodes enable artists to merge selected nodes into a single, combined node, with parameters grouped by node within the Parameters window. The user-friendly feature lets artists add, remove, or rename nodes and input/output ports, hide unnecessary parameters, store nodes in an external location, and share nodes with other users.
