The award-winning developer brings visual effects and audio tools — powered by advanced AI models — to Adobe, Avid, FCP, and OFX video workflows.
Boris FX, a pioneer in the visual effects plugin industry, announces a pivotal shift in its strategic direction with the 2024 release of its flagship product, Continuum. The new release marks a significant milestone for Boris FX, becoming one of the first in the industry to integrate AI-driven effects into a visual effects plugin.
Boris FX also complements Continuum’s AI-driven innovations with the 2024 release of sister product CrumplePop, renowned for its AI audio restoration tools. The coordinated release underscores the company’s holistic approach to AI within the Boris FX Suite and positions Boris FX as a leading AI company in the visual effects domain.
“The AI-powered plugins included in Continuum and CrumplePop mark the beginning of the evolution of the Boris FX Suite product family moving forward,” says Boris Yamnitsky, president and founder of Boris FX. “We’ve been working behind the scenes to develop ML (machine learning) models built and trained on the specific needs of the post-production community and are thrilled to introduce AI technology into the editing and VFX plugin workflows the film and television industry has relied on for nearly thirty years.”
Editing and Visual Effects
Continuum’s popular image restoration category adds two new ML effects, each built with custom models. The BCC+ DeNoise ML effect instantly removes unwanted artifacts introduced by low-quality image sensors, low light, or lossy compression codecs. The one-click drag-and-drop effect analyzes the image and produces high-quality results while retaining and enhancing detail contrast. The BCC+ UpRes ML effect, exclusively available for After Effects, scales up footage regardless of format size with clean, sharp results. It also includes options to zoom in on a portion of a clip and sharpen it to preserve the fine details.
Additionally, Continuum’s Particle Illusion takes advantage of AI technology. Artists can now generate unique, intricate particle sprites using Stability AI. Choosing an existing sprite as a starting point allows artists to achieve great results without relying on complex, prompt crafting. Presets and an entire history encourage experimentation. Users can import resultant images directly into the sprite library.
“We hear repeatedly that editors and artists prefer to stay within the UI of their host application rather than round-tripping back to a standalone application,” states Yamnitsky. “When designing our new AI plugins, we always offer the time-saving benefit of not having to export an effect out and then import it back into an NLE. We hope our new AI tools excite artists as we lean into this innovative technology. This is just the first step.”
Audio Tools
Editors often find themselves tasked with audio clean-up in addition to their daily creative tasks. CrumplePop gives editors access to fast, user-friendly tools that fix common audio issues. The new release introduces the next generation of machine-learning models in five of its AI audio plugins — AudioDenoise, TrafficRemover, ClipRemover, RustleRemover, and WindRemover.
The improved models sample the most diverse data set yet, producing more accurate, crisp audio. Users can expect significant quality boosts in challenging, high-noise environments and vocal tone quality across all types of recordings.
“Nothing pulls an audience out of what they are watching quicker than poor audio,” notes Yamitsky. “The CrumplePop development team has years of experience building and training AI models. Editors, podcasters, and content creators no longer have to worry about trying to hide poor audio with other sounds. CrumplePop’s tools convert audio to studio quality in minutes.”
