The rousingly poetic Jeep commercial “Portraits,” cut by editor Brian Sanford formerly at Cutting Room and now at KYLE edit, and Merritt Duff at Cutting Room, was awarded the 2016 Bronze Clio in the Film – Commercials category. Additionally, the spot was named the 2016 Creative Clio Bowl winner and previously was ranked #1 in ADWEEK’s roundup of “The 5 Best Ads of Super Bowl 50.”

The moving minute-long ad created by Iris Worldwide in New York features a sequence of over 60 striking photographs spotlighting the faces of those deeply connected to Jeep throughout the auto manufacturer's 75-year history. Black and white portraits of notable idols from Marilyn Monroe to Steve McQueen are threaded with pop culture symbols like The Terminator interwoven with the likenesses of lesser-known folks like George Speaker, who manned the wheel of a Jeep during perilous World War II missions.

The distinctive edit creates an inspiringly iconic tone for the piece, embodying the groundbreaking spirit of Jeep and giving the people behind the company's history a moving and reverential homage. The work is both uncannily detailed yet impressively restrained, managing to hit that hard-to-reach sweet spot of exalting the brand as it simultaneously grounds it.  All in all, the deft work echoes the overriding theme of the campaign spelled out in the commercial's final moments: “We Don't Make Jeep. You Do.”
